Dan1138 -> RE: False religions pointing in 'mystic' direction. (7/3/2008 8:26:37 AM)

quote:
ORIGINAL: FurGodWurLivin First off... Mysticism is nothing new. Secondly, mysticism is somewhat universal in all religions, no matter what they call themselves. Christian Mysticism dates way back to the turn of the third century AD (Origen). Based on this, "going mystical" is not a sign of the apocolypse. Thirdly, the word "mystical" comes from latin and greek words that both simply mean "hidden". So in reality, anything that is shrouded in mystery (ie, God) by definition is mystical. What does all of this add up to? Chill. The world will grow darker, but the church will also grow brighter (see the parable of the wheat and the tares) before the coming of the son of man. If we are willing to believe that mankind will reach the pinnacle of sin at the end times, it is a necessity that the church will reach the pinnacle of holiness. That is why it's a good time to be alive. But this is not a definite sign that that time be "now". Adam research the "Desert Fathers" for the earliest forms of christian mysticism. Most think that all mysticism is eastern but that is not neccesarily true. Mysticism does mean "hidden knowledge." So think of the Gnostics, or the Nicolatians and Baalamites referred to in scripture. It is the mysterious that hooks the simple mind into thinking they will be made powerful by great knowledge. Please see 2 Cor 10:4 on how to respond
