A brief has been filed in a federal appeals court asking the justices to overturn a judge who ordered a school district specifically to ban the Bible in its policy regarding the distribution of literature to students.

WND reported just a week ago when a federal judge declared unconstitutional a Florida law that was used to prevent Gideons from handing out Bibles to students on public property near schools.

Now comes another dispute, this one in Missouri and pursued by Liberty Counsel in its request to the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in St. Louis. It wants the court to overturn a district judge's ruling that could be used to allow distribution of the Quran, but specifically censors the Bible under the district's open forum policy that is content-neutral.

The case comes out of a policy adopted by the school board in the South Iron School District in Iron County, Mo. The district has had a long-standing open access policy "that allows many community groups to present literature and information to students at its schools, outside the classroom during non-instructional time." In fact, officials noted, no one requesting permission ever had been refused.

I don't see where this judge has a leg to stand on. If they were passing out Bibles to the kids in school time and preaching to them during school hours, then I would think he had something there. But since it sounds like the students aren't forced to listen or attend and it is outside of school hours, then I don't see what the big deal is.

The problem here is that we have only the WorldNut version, which is likely missing key background information. Based on that limited information, I'd tend to agree.

If it's the same case that ACLU Missouri took on last year (link below), then the dispute was over whether it was proper to have a school policy specifically allowing Gideons to come into the classroom and distribute Bibles to students in the classroom.

Supposedly, the parents who complained were Christian, but said they wanted themselves as parents, not the schools, to be the ones teaching religion to their children.

None of this seems to involve anything about specifically censoring the Bible and allowing the Koran. I'm pretty sure the Koran counts as religious literature too and would therefore fall under the same ban as the Bible, if indeed this is upheld.

The problem here is that we have only the WorldNut version, which is likely missing key background information. Based on that limited information, I'd tend to agree.

I had never heard of the site, but looking at the site closely, I would have to agree that they are likely leaving out things in order to slant the article to their view. But if the facts are given as is, then my opinion is the same.

I think this is a very fair assumption. It has gotten to the point where I won't use WorldNut as a primary source.
