ISASS.exe Error (Full Version)

Hey, y'all. After running scans last night (spybot, avg, etc) I got an error upon reboot: ISASS.exe-sytem error-an invalid parameter was passed to a service or function. When you click OK, it keeps rebooting.

Can anyone tell me what to do?

I called my mom since she is the one who reported the error to me and she confirmed it's LSASS.exe that's the error.

Local Security Authentication Server, part of the user-authentication process. But if it's in a strange directory, it's probably malware.

Can you boot to a previous restore point? Long shot, but worth a try. Could also try booting into safe mode just to be able to say you tried it.

Hard to find any useful information in searches on lsass.exe/isass.exe, but here are the condensed gleanings I've made (and these could be wrong:
1) Isass.exe is not an essential part of Windows and can be removed; because of its unclear status, some malware uses this filename to hide.
2) Lsass.exe is an essential part of local security on some versions of Windows, and if it has gone bad/missing, a fresh install is required.
Again, this information could be completely wrong, but that's what I've been able to find. Can't say for sure because I don't run the affected systems.

Hey, thanks everyone.

I took it back from whence it came and the guy totally ticked me off. It was obvious he'd had a bad day, but I know what good customer service is....and he was NOT giving it.

He'd never seen the invalid password error and was insistent that malware had gotten in to cause the LSASS error. It's not ISASS, so it's not a worm.

He said, "You haven't backed everything up?" My reply, "I've only had it like a month and honestly I didn't expect a brand new computer with every sort of spybot, avg, firewall, etc, you can find to get attacked by something." He said, "Well, it could happen to an old one, too. I'm just trying to educate you." I wanted to say, "Look kid, I've probably worked on computers since you were born, and I don't appreciate you talking down to me like I have no idea what I'm doing."

He got very huffy with me and his attitude that I'd inconvenienced him by coming in that day irritated me even more.

Anyway, he has no idea what caused it and I'm back to my old crawly puter until I get it back.

Oh yeah, it started doing the invalid passowrd thing when I booted it in safe mode. It wouldn't even read the windows boot disc.

Okay... This is a bit of information. One of the things I saw in a forum about this problem had to do with a fresh install, and the suggested diagnosis was HDD failure. I'd be inclined to think that might be the thing. However, since you say it won't read the install disc (I'm assuming you mean when you try to BOOT from it, not when you try to reach it inside MS-Windows(tm)), that moves the likely failure point from the hard disc drive to the disc controller, or the motherboard (which amount to the same thing on most newer machines)... If it is a motherboard/disc controller problem, it should be covered under the manufacturer's warrantee.
This is more likely to be the case if you've had other mysterious read errors before this incident.

I agree that a month is rather soon to be expecting problems, but backups should be done at least weekly for any files that you don't already have on some install medium. But that's no excuse for a kid CSR to get cheeky with you.

Ahhh.scary.

See the thing didn't ever really seem to work right...or at least the way I'd expected it to work.

I purchased it from a local computer place who makes their own systems. I'd bought one from them back in 2000 and used it as my backup when my emachines crashed several times.

They'd also fixed my emachines several times.

I felt like something just wasn't right. I will be SO incredibly validated if it's a hardware thing and not a malware issue.

He got all offended, too, when I told him I used a separate firewall system other than the Windows build-in. I was like, dude...whatever.

I know he'd clearly had a bad day, but I do customer service and I know that regardless of the day you've had, if someone's coming to you for service, theirs has probably been worse.

OH....part of the other reason I haven't been able to back up is because my external hard drive was corrupted. I'm going to buy a new one. What do you recommend?

He can get over it. Windows built-in firewall is pretty useless. It blocks too much outgoing and not enough incoming, if I recall correctly. Good for you that you use a separate firewall; even better if you have a gateway firewall machine (either a server or a router firewall).

You're right. You have to give good customer service, especially on your bad days.

As to an external drive, I recommend this: See if you can crack open the old one (or get a new one that's just the external case), then go to Newegg.com, look for the highest-rated (most stars and most ratings (i.e. 4/5 with 1000 ratings is better than 5/5 with 5 ratings) in your price range. Then you can put the new drive in your external drive case. I stay clear of Seagate, and I prefer Maxtor or Western Digital, but there are a lot of good brands out there. Samsung, I think, makes some good drives, too.
If you have a lot of spare change, a solid-state drive is supposed to be reliable and resistant to shocks and bumps.

Hey, thanks for the advice. I'm going to go looking tonight. I think I want to keep my old computer as is because it has lots of important stuff on it and I can use it as a backup if this one dies again.

I got my new one back last night and you were SO RIGHT! It was a hard drive failure. He was rather surprised about that! Anyway, they restored all our documents and it was all under warranty. It was just a pain to reload all my programs and stuff.
