I don't know if this will stay here in general faith or not, but have any of you heard the song mistaken by Warren Barfield. This is not so much about the song or the singer, but the meaning. The first verse goes

"I shouldn’t have to tell you who I am
Cause who I am should be speaking for itself
Cause if I am who I want to be
Then who you see won’t even be me
Oh the more and more I disappear
The more and more He becomes clear "

My question then is do you aspire to this? Is this a goal to attain for you? To be mistaken for Jesus.

How many of you can say that this is how you live your life, or hope to do so. For others to see Jesus through me, to know Him, and see His love for them through me, that is my goal. As imperfect as I am right now, as far from being like Jesus as I am right now, that is what I strive for.

"May He touch with my hands
See through my eyes
May He speak through my lips
Live through my life
I want Him to
I want Him to live "

Sad to say that so far I have not been doing so good in this area. There are a handful of people who continually see me at my worst. How do I show them who I really am, and who I am trying to be? Any advice?

"‘ Til everyone I meet
Sees Jesus in me
This is all I wanna be
I wanna be mistaken
For Jesus "

Aside from knowing and loving Him more and more and having a closer and closer walk with Him, it is the great longing of my heart.

Actually, I don't think the three goals I mention can be separated....

Thank you for an excellent challenge!

An older song reminds us,

"You're the only Jesus some may ever see,
You're the only Bible some will ever read."

This is exactly what the Christian life is to be! I have trouble sometimes even expressing this in words so...Thank you for sharing this!

Who you really are is a Child of God, indwelt by the living resurrected Spirit of Christ. Our goal is to allow Jesus to be who He is, in and through us. If we abide in Him...we bear much fruit. We do not produce the fruit, God does. We are the branch, He is the vine.

As we abide in Christ, depending upon Him and His sufficiency, then His love overflows from us to all those around us. Our part is to abide, depend, trust; Gods part is to work in and through us, as we do.

Bless you.

I beg to differ. Your heart's cry is evident. And, for now, that is ALL, that is sufficient, and He will do ALL to accomplish His will and purposes for you.

If others do not see Jesus in you perhaps they do not know Who they are looking for?

Bless you!

Yes, the abiding life is the key:

Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.
I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.

John 15: 4-5

But, does anyone know what the key to the abiding life is?

Thank you for your reply liveloved, it is appreciated.

My question for advice was regarding some people I work with, mainly one, who at times has seen me at my worst. To the point I am not sure he knows where my faith lies, or if he does, he may think I am just a typical Christian(talks the talk, doesn't walk the walk). For some reason I can not come straight out and tell him I am a Christian, and when I am around him I tend to do things I shouldn't, like ogle woman at work, curse, which I am trying desperately to stop doing, and complain about work, which I don't like to do. He says all the time that he doesn't believe in God, and yet still thinks he is going to hell. I recently got the impression that He is the reason I am at this job. I need to witness to him, but don't know how, now that he has seen the side of me I am trying to put behind me. Any advice would be helpful. Thanks again.

This is my worry, sometimes I don't give the image of what they should be seeing, and if it is the only Jesus some may ever see, than it is a very bad impersonation which doesn't show His true amazing love and grace.

So what is the key to the abiding life?

Total submission?

True sincere belief?

Surrendering all to the only one worthy, our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Oh wow, SavedByGraceMD, what you are sharing is THE PERFECT scenario for witness. WE ARE NOT GOOD. That's the whole reason we need a Savior. And that's the whole trouble with most of Christianity. We're all trying to be good, pretending we are good, denying our badness, and everyone but us sees it!

So, the KEY? Live HONESTLY, TRUTHFULLY! Confess your badness to your unbelieving friend. Confess your badness and share about your most merciful God! It is our SIN that is our biggest point of testimony. And your confession of it is the most real evidence of the life of God in you!

So when you curse, confess it as sin. It is a bad sin habit and often our habits take time for us to break. Our minds are like steel traps at times and it seems bad habits stick hard. So when those wrong thoughts and wrong actions come out, just be honest.

And don't be so hard on yourself. We are all works in progress---His work and He is doing it and will accomplish it. It is our part to abide, remain, stay close and cozy with, listening to His voice and responding. Spend quiet times at His feet and you will hear His whispers of mercy---something those who think they no longer sin will never hear. His whispers of mercy are for those who are willing to come to the light, have their deeds exposed as having been wrought in God and that means even your curse and confession. Be honest with yourself, God and others and your friends may desire to know this God you worship and love. Bless you![:)]LL

This is so true LL. Maybe, hopefully, the Lord will use my shortcomings with him, to open his eyes. Just because we are Christians, we are not perfect. I tend to lose sight of this, as I let another opportunity to use the time I have for good, but instead wallow in the pit of failure. I am not perfect, but He, the One who saved us is. I hope and pray the Lord gives me the words to use with him, and anyone else whom He brings in my path. Thanks again, it is so truly appreciated.

Ohhhh...that is soooo sweet! Thank you....

First of all, know that God is well able to work around some of our worst blunders. Well I am certain you know that.

But I used to be a supervisor at work and I did not always portray the Christian they all knew me to be. More often I portrayed me, in the flesh. But God was so gracious! The ones that he put on my heart I would pray for. They would kind-of mock me at times and make sarcastic remarks but every once in awhile, when the Lord would open the door I would say something. I never gave the plan of salvation to any of my co-workers but I did to a 102 y.o. man right before he died and that man sat straight up in bed and shouted at the top of his lungs "Jesus, save me"![:D] He was right across the hall from the nurses station and everyone sitting there heard it[:D]

Back to my story...I thought, much of the time I was not always the best of witnesses. I left that place and several years later ran into several of my co-workers who I had just said a few words, off and on to, and they had gotten saved[:D]

I don't know why I am telling you all this. I guess to encourage you that God can cover our blunders better than we think. I will be back with the key because I have to run and make a few phone calls and run to the store...

The world does have this idea that we Christians are supposed to be perfect, and many who call themselves Christians have perpetuated that myth. There is only One who is perfect, and it is none of us.

Your heart is in the right place brother, that is the important thing. Continue to be available to Him, and if it is God's will, He will create the opportunity for you. And when those opportunities come, He will also bring to your mind the words that will result in what He desires.

"As the Father hath loved me, even so have I loved you." "God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son." We see it in God the Son, as He poured out His life in unwearying ministry for the souls and bodies of men; as His heart agonized in compassion for the multitudes, like sheep without a shepherd; as He endured with majestic patience the taunts and gibes of the judgment scene; as He bowed in agony under the bloody bows of the scourge; as, at the last, in His own body bearing our sins on the tree, His dying breath was spent in plaintive prayer for His murderers. We see, too, God the Spirit to be Love. How tender in pleading with men! How gentle in rebuke! How tireless and patient under resistance! How loath to leave, though flouted and scorned! How quick to forgive the crimson sins and remorseful follies of the vanished years of a wasted life! I agree...I would add just be a friend to the guy. Just be there for him. Listen to him. Show an active interest in him. If troubles come to him be there for him. If he seems to warm to you, go out to lunch with him and just get to know him...and make certain that that is your only agenda. To get to know him and care for him. If he thinks you are doing it for any other reason then that, he will think you don't really value him as a soul who is truely valuable; who was created in the image of God, who is unique, a priceless person....as indeed he is....

OneJohn410 -> RE: Mistaken (7/1/2008 2:25:03 AM)

Saved,

If there's anything in here you haven't already read, I'll take credit for it.

Being genuine is going to be a big part of your ministry to your coworker. Being a Christian is not an easy road. Trying to be so much more someone you are not is going to really put the thumb of defeat on your walk. Being someone you are not- and as hard as anyone can try- being just like Jesus is surely a super goal, and I'd have to expect that it would appear so superficial(?) or goody-two-shoes to Mr. or Ms. Nonbeliever as to be a joke perhaps, or unobtainable? Don't go thinking you've got to be a saint before you can talk to the Nonbelievers or Unbelievers.

You might just ask the guy next time he declares with remorse (but what can he do) that he knows he's hell-bent... you might ask him if he'd like to go to the other place. That could be an opener. He's oogling the beautiful summer surroundings and being obnoxious- you could ask him how would he feel if that was his girlfriend or wife and he heard someone else making the ruckus. Maybe he's never thought like that much before. Maybe he's not afraid of losing his job, either. There's not too many supers I know of that would like to see such behavior.

Mostly, as you remember this situation, simply pray about it.

Anyway,

The great key to the abiding life is.....LOVE....and to continue in...LOVE....~Faith which worketh by love~

I changed my signature to show how we are transformed. Believe me, I am re-teaching myself, first and foremost[&:] I walked this way of LOVE for a number of years but then let the enemy rip me off and got away from it.

Now, God is calling me back....Echos of His voice speak to my heart, once more....and I am so glad. And I am so grateful...

This book is the single most influential writing of my Christian life next to the Bible. He leads one through, step my step to the abiding life..... It literally changed my life. It was written in 1904.....

Thanks for that link Cherished. I have liked what I have read so far. If you like James McConky, I think you will also appreciate Major Ian Thomas, who has been instrumental in my understanding of the indwelling life of Christ. He is on the path2prayer.com website and also here:

WE ARE NOT GOOD. That's the whole reason we need a Savior. And that's the whole trouble with most of Christianity. We're all trying to be good, pretending we are good, denying our badness, and everyone but us sees it!

amen and amen. Preach it!

Its not our perfection that draws people to our walk. Its how we love. Its the integrity we live by. If we mess up, we confess it. We live humbly, always giving Jesus honor for the good we "do" and apologising and doing everything we can to change when we mess up.

Thank God we do not have to be perfect little gods to show His love to the woirld. If we did, then we take the glory from God and try to place it upon ourselves.

Certainly live holy lives. It is our call but recognise WE.....are not God. WE....save no one. WE...are not the attoning sacrifice.

OneJohn, SonInMe,

Thank you also for your responses, I really do appreciate it. I know in my finite little head I could never be Jesus, and would never try to take the glory from Him. Nor do I think I do the saving, for salvation can only come through Him, offered by Him at the cross. I guess my main problem is that I expect too much of myself. I want so honestly to just be a good example and a good witness, it is hard to see past my own shortcomings at first.

I have known the Lord my whole life, but have only lived for the Lord for the past 9 months or so. Just so happens to be 2 weeks after I started this job. So everyone there has seen me in a transitional state so to say. Leaving behind the old me, and becoming the new me that He is making me to be. That being said, I have said and done some things I shouldn't have while there, I guess more in line of being excepted by everyone and not really doing what I should do, which is do what the Lord wants me to do.

So now I am where I am, feeling I need to witness to this guy, but not having been the best example so far. I know we are not perfect, and I know what to say to that remark, but I don't want my bad example to be a reason for him to say no to the Lord, like his excuse. But I am also beginning to think that my shortcomings may work as a prime example.

Am I being to focused on myself here, it is starting to look that way to me. The Lord is my rock, and if this is what He wants me to do, I just need to do it, and let Him work out the rest.

Thank you all so much for your input, it has helped me greatly. May God bless you all and keep you safe.

This is absolutely true. Love and integrity. Integrity is being real, not pretend, and this is what Jesus loves. . . when we are honest. So bless you all brothers and sisters. Be real. Be truthful. Love Jesus and love those you are with and when we blow it, which we will, confess it and be thankful for Christ's abundant love and mercy! When He is lifted up in that way, men will be drawn to Him.
