Some sad news. The guy who stays with us and does handyman work in exchange for room and board, lost his mother today. She had been sick for a while. Some good news: (This is an e-mail that I sent to several people who've been praying about the situation) My brother (G) and his wife (L) have needed prayers the last few months or so. They've wanted to buy a house and wanted L to stay home until S (age 8) and W (age 6) were off to college. They just couldn't afford to do that in here. They had to stay in CA until L's daughter, A, turned 18. Even though A never had much contact with her father and always considered G to be her real "daddy," it was court-ordered that G and L stay here with A until she became 18. L is originally from Houston, TX. A few years ago her grandmother had to be put in a nursing home. L's father had a choice of paying the mortgage on grandma's house, putting it up for sale or letting G and L take over the payments. If G and L were going to do this, they needed to do it before the end of the year. They decided to do it before the end of summer so the kids wouldn't have to miss school. The only problem is that G wouldn't have a job and he would have to stay here. (A stayed here anyway because of college. She'll be 18 in Sept.) They had no idea how long they would be separated and it was looking like L might have to work outside the home once they got there. G works for Homeland Security so a job transfer was possible but they had nothing open in Houston. I inherited all of L's houseplants, except two ferns. The two ferns were at the altar when they got married. L has nicknamed them "G 'n' L" and she's had them since they got married 15 years ago. A will have some to do some adjusting to life in CA without her parents, but she will be staying with my father during her breaks that she can't fly home for. Last Wednesday (the 23rd) we packed them up in a U-Haul and a mini-van. "G 'n' L" - the plants were put in the very back of the U-Haul. They were warned that "G 'n' L" would be DOA by the time they got to Houston. Well, W, S, G and L and "G 'n' L" arrived in their new home last Saturday. All of them, people and plants, arrived in one piece. A little tired (the people) and thirsty (the plants) but all very healthy. Last week, G's boss phoned Houston and told them of the situation and gave G a high recommendation. G went for an interview yesterday and got a higher position with the same company!! He comes back to CA on August 6th and will be back working in Houston on August 15th!
