Does Viacom have the time and money to sift through 12 terabytes of data? This is what I meant by no conception of scale. And by the way, whoever said the government looking in on us, that doesn't seem to be quite right in this case. It appears they are being ordered to hand these records over to another corporation, which is suing YouTube.

They'll probably just pull a few "as an example", but especially at colleges trying to sue them for some type of copyright infringement or something.

Of course college IPs are going to be high on the list. But they're also among the least likely to keep accurate records of who accessed what from their internal network, which is almost certainly masqueraded. Then the colleges are going to do something stupid to counteract it (probably just blocking Youtube's IP, or worse... don't get me started).

I think that they would target colleges for 2 reasons: easy to get records and they know that they can probably get the accused to cough up some money too.

And by the way, whoever said the government looking in on us, that doesn't seem to be quite right in this case. It appears they are being ordered to hand these records over to another corporation, which is suing YouTube. What I believe is going on is Viacom's purpose is twofold: firstly they're interested in the people posting copyrighted videos - hence the bit about them being after usernames as well as IPs (since you don't need a username to view them). Those people could thus become targets of prosecution themselves. And secondly, I believe they hope to use the usage information (who viewed what) to prove that the bulk of videos viewed are copyrighted works, and thus YouTube is deriving revenue primarily from copyright infringement. Mind you that's just speculation, but it makes the most sense in the context of the lawsuit. That doesn't change the fact that marketers would kill for that info should it ever escape into the wild. And even though it's a huge amount of data, it's not a difficult programming challenge to automate the data mining. (For example, since YouTube videos have descriptive tags, it's fairly easy to tally up the most frequently viewed tags by any particular IP. Associate that IP with a name, then they have an idea about what interests that person. Cue the spam.) -Robb

The most annoying is the *-them-all-and-let-God-sort-them-out types, which seem to be the most likely to contain misspellings and other annoyances. But anyway... "Look, a spammer! Shoot it!"
