Hey guys I hope I can get some feedback but... Obviously I'm new here so a little back ground. I'm a college student having some trouble in my walk with God. I'm an engineering major and a "logical" learner and thinker (a+b=c). So something as abstract as God and faith is very difficult. Basically what I'm saying.... are there any others out there that are having the same problem or have overcome such trials. If so, how?

I cannot speak to your walk, but if the problem has to do with thinking logically...I certainly hope that logic and God are not mutually exclusive. [;)] In fact, I believe that one of the greatest stumbling blocks to many who desire the deeper things of God, is their refusal to think. And when thinking it is necessary to carry those thoughts through to their logical conclusions. God says... "Come now, let us reason together..." Isaiah 1:18 Is there anything cooler than that? It will encourage you I think to remember that the Scientific Revolution was built by Christians who knew that a knowable God built a knowable universe that could be discovered. So many of the great scientists of the 18th and 19th centuries were strong believers. A logical mind will show you God's handiwork, but your relationship with God will come from staying in His Word daily, keeping short accounts with your sin (spot a sin and immediately call it a sin, turn away from it and thank God for forgiving you) and being in fellowship with other Christians on a frequent basis. It's God's will that we fervently love the brethren (1 Pet. 1:22). I'm like you; give me an outline any day. [:)] Thank God He made you this way, rejoice, and keep hitting the books so you can glorify Him with your mind, your work, and your worship. You might not go to the mission field, but later with your income and your love you can help send someone else who might not be able to go otherwise. And the people in your engineering office need to hear the Good News, too. God bless you, dear heart. If God has made you an engineer, then be the best engineer you can be. Rock on!

Hi Podoboo, Welcome to the Forum. Faith, in my view, is to believe when your common sense tells you not to. Unfortunately, God created us with common sense and a brain which questions indefinetly and seeks answers and knowledge. How easy it would have been for Him to create a race of robots pre-programmed to love Him and to do His will. But because He loved us, more than we can ever imagine, He gave us the freedom to choose. To believe in Him or not to do so. And that's what we call Faith. It is logical for you to add a+b then wonder whether God exists. Plenty others before you had similar problems; and many will follow you too with the same difficulties to believe. What I advise is to hand over the problem to God; even if you don't believe in Him fully or have difficulty in visualising Him as it were. Say: "I think you're out there somewhere. I'd like to believe in you. Help me to do so and increase my Faith in you". If you really mean it when you say it - He'll help you alright. Join a church or Bible Study Group - it will help you discuss things with others and learn from them. "I believe, Lord; help my unbelief." Mark 9:24

Potobo hi, I agree with all that has been said here, and your choice of the adjective, fadingt, in your post, says a lot. It tells me you realize where you are today, it tells me you may want to stop this trend or at least slow it some, and it tells me you are God's child, because if you were not, requesting feedback may be the last thing you would do. I like the person's advice who urged you to become the best engineer, if that is what God has called you to be, and that long-term you may support someone else's mission efforts via your income. "Come let us reason" great quote and great advice. Questioning things instead of looking for facts to believe in, will ultimately help your faith become personal, and will help you grow as you are intended. One piece of advice, if you are typical take Friday evenings and just do something fun and let the studies alone for a few hours. That advice will serve you well in work life too. So glad you posted and wish you lots of growth and maturing both today, and in your tomorrow.

Thank you all for the wonderful replies! I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one. I know my thought will not change over night and that it will take effort. That's why I'm happy I found this place. I am having a difficulty believing in God. Everywhere God's name seems to be drifting away and especially as a science major - religion is ....well.... blasphemy. I'm quite introverted and enjoy time to myself but my best friend is the youth minister of my church so we are able to help each other greatly. I haven't talk to him about my difficulty because... well I don't know to be honest[:(] The question "Does God exist?" is so simple.... but so complex. And deermouse, thank you - I'll try my hardest to be the best engineer I can [:)]

Hi again, I can well imagine how difficult it must be for a young student to stand out as a Christian (or potential Christian) in an environment where everyone else seems to ridicule religion in general, and Christianity in particular. Many learned individuals, especially in the fields of science, medicine and so on, tend to see religion and the existance of a God as running contrary to what they are taught and what science has discovered. This makes it particularly difficult for a scientist to claim he believes in God. I was discussing this very subject with a Christian doctor friend of mine. I asked him how he could relate his knowledge of medicine with the existance of a Creator God. He said he saw his job as being similar to a car mechanic. He just learnt how the different parts of the body function and how to put them right when they go wrong. Unlike the car mechanic, he didn't have the complete blueprint design of the body. He said that God kept bits of the blueprint secret so that we humans don't ruin the whole product completely! Anyway, all the best with your studies and your future - both as an engineer and a Christian. Remember - God wants learned people like you in places of influence. Only when we have Christians in such high places that we stand a chance of making this world a better place. God bless.

Actually, if you look at the scientific evidence (especially at the recent discovery of DNA's blueprint in the last few years) it makes it VERY difficult to not believe in God. Those learned individuals who look at the evidence with a critical mind can't help to see that we could not have gotten here by chance knowing all that we know today. It was when I got into the details in my molecular biology and organic chemistry classes that I began to question the theory of evolution. The evidence for evolution diminishes by the year as each new discovery is made. Remember learning about how people use to believe that the world was flat? when evidence started to pile up against that notion, the die-hards in the university refused to change course and continued to teach about the flat earth. I think that is where we are today ... there are discoveries being made to show evolution just isn't reality. One of the latest is the Cro-magnon Man ... they now say he was not a transition species, but was an Homosapien ... just as we are ... the differences in his features were no different than comparing the features of an eastern European to an Asian skeleton. So I do not think you need to worry about looking at science ... it can be a tool to increase your faith. It is amazing just how marvelously complex we are ... golly, a single stand of DNA has 3.1 billion characters! Not to mention the individual cells ... Podoboo932, find yourself a good solid group of believers as you study engineering. Fellowship is very important. The thing that makes college difficult is more about the opinions being shared by those in authority and many of your peers. We have a tendency to want to fit in. Don't worry about learning ... if you look at the evidence logically, you will see that there is plenty of scientific evidence that points to God ... and if you look at the statistical probabilities of various things, such as the odds that a DNA strand so complex that it has 3.1 billion elements that all have to be lined up perfectly ... now that will really build your faith in God. I marvel at those who continue to believe in evolution given all the evidence against it ... now those people have faith. [;)]

Scripture tells us; (Joh 3:16) For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. (Joh 3:17) For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. (Joh 3:18) He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. So one either believes in Christ or they do not; one is saved the other is condemned. Logic thinking has nothing to do with it; you either are or you are not a believer. Thsnks RC

to help add cement to your walk way, never stop reading the word, and I believe will be very helpful is Lee Strobels "Case for" series. The Case for Christ, ...for Faith,....for the Creator...and the Case for the Real Christ. The Case for Christ and the Case for the Creator, could be benificial in the college enviornment

Hello podoboo932 Somehow, in my upbringing, I tried to use my intellect in everything. I reasoned my way out of accepting Christ. But then, far into adulthood, I came to the conclusion that I was dead inside. How? I ran across a small group of people that knew the Lord intimately. They didn't rattle off with religious stuff, nor did they splatter their emotions all over the place. No, they had true joy, loved each other and spoke fondly of Jesus. So, it wasn't an intellectual decision but one of the heart; deeper than the mind and intimately more personal. I found it totally illogical that one would allow himself to die on a cross for my sins. What's more, he conquered death so that I wouldn't have to eat it. He did all of those things without my opinion. So, He doesn't need me, I need Him. You must be searching to some extent or you wouldn't be on this forum. But let me say that Jesus loves you with an unconditional love.

[:D] You're talking my language! rcjames - Yep, that's my problem, I need to learn to develop a relationship with God because he acts beyond a concept at which we cannot comprehend. brothertodd - Thanks! I'll let my friend, the minister, know about that series. jn1010lf - Fortunately my school that I'm transferring to has a good amount of Christian organizations so hopefully I'll be able to come out of shell and meet some good people. [:)]
