IBorn2Worship -> Power Verses (7/4/2008 12:34:47 PM)

Heb 6:16 For men verily swear by the greater: and an oath for confirmation is to them an end of all strife.
Heb 6:17 Wherein God, willing more abundantly to shew unto the heirs of promise the immutability of his counsel, confirmed it by an oath:
Heb 6:18 That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us:
Heb 6:19 Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil;
Heb 6:20 Whither the forerunner is for us entered, even Jesus

A few days ago, the Holy Spirit quickened the above verses to my heart. I think one could meditate and meditate on them forever and still not receive all the glory from them.

However, I am uncertain what the "two immutable things" are. It seems as if one is His counsel. Is the other His oath?

Thanks in advance for any answers.

Most of the commentaries I consulted would agree with your conclusion. Here are a few samples:

18. That by two immutable things, etc. What God says as well as what he swears is immutable. - John Calvin

Heb 6:18
Two immutable things (δύο πραγμάτων ἀμεταθέτων)
His word and his oath.
- Vincent's Word Studies

By two immutable things (dia duo pragmatōn ametathetōn). See Heb_6:17. God’s promise and God’s oath, both unchangeable. - Robertson's Word Pictures

That by two immutable things: another end of the Mediator’s oath is here added, God’s oath and a promise spoken to before, which are firm and stedfast to eternity; heaven and earth may pass away, but they cannot. - Matthew Poole

Heb 6:18 That by two immutable things,.... God's counsel and oath, which never change and alter, and from which he never varies . . . - John Gill

Heb 6:18
That by two immutable things - The promise and oath of God: the promise pledged his faithfulness and justice; the oath, all the infinite perfections of his Godhead, for he sware by himself.
- Adam Clarke

Why, I thank you so much for taking the time to do that for me. I really love that one by Clarke - a keeper and I have him on my other computer.

“That by two immutable things”—what are the two immutable (or unchangeable) things? The Lord promised Abram descendants as innumerable as the stars of heaven (see Gen. 15:4–5), then later He confirmed His promise with an oath (see Gen. 22:16–18). God confirmed His unchangeable Word of promise by a second unchangeable thing, His oath. These two immutable things gave Abraham encouragement and assurance.
Now what are the two immutable things for us today? Not only do we have the promise made to Abraham for our encouragement, but we have a far richer revelation of God’s love—the gift of His Son. The (1) death and resurrection of Christ and (2) His ascension and intercession for us are the two immutable things."
