You obviously have way too much time on your hands to be putting out all that. However, if you had read the preceding posts, you would have discovered that WormHeart only mentioned France. Therefore, that's who I was talking about. This is just too much!

By your logic, a country who disagrees with the United States in the UN does not "love" America. Even though the French have always had diplomatic relations with America and were part of NATO.

Well, a quick search of the United States at the United Nations will show that there were many occasions where many nations in the world disagreed with the United States.

Wrong assumption again. If one knows the sources, one finds w/o that much effort.

But you are incorrect on the argument you made earlier; i.e, that France has disagreed with us at the UN and therefore they "love us" (you meant that sarcastically).

The list I just showed illustrates that on many occasions, much of the world voted differently than we did at the UN. Does this mean by your logic all of those countries do not love us?

Well, we've all read about the days when the Vikings owned the western world and it was pretty gruesome. ; )

True - although it is often exaggerated just how gruesome they were. It was a very interesting period and lives were pretty cheap.
It still echoes to this day. The entire anglo-saxon world are still honouring their gods in the naming of the weekdays for instance.
But that is beside the issue.

But have you consistently supported the French in the UN?

No. There were even the ridicilus issue of “Freedom Fries” when they wouldn’t support the ill-adviced war in Iraq.
The sheer amount of hostility toward France concerning the war in Iraq shows that the gratitude is gone.

The US was being actively engaged in the War before Japan attacked us. Have you heard about the shipping Germany sunk before Pearl Harbor and the war materials we sent to Europe before Pearl Harbor? How about the Lend-Lease program that sent money and material to Europe? And the last I heard, only Finland had repaid their debt.

Look, I know the *Yawn* comment was provocative, but it seems a lot of people whip out WWII like you decided to save Europe from the 3 Reich on you own. You didn’t.
You supported Britan with materials and such, but I doubt very much you would have entered the war, had you not been attacked.
I don’t blame you. The 3. Reich was THE most powerful military of its time. They had the position the US has today.
Had Germany taken all of Europe, the US would have trade relations with The 3. Reich.
That is how politics work.

Yes it is. ; )

The problem with the US at the time was we were isolationist and wanted nothing to do with Europe's wars or anyone else's unless we started it. The mood of the country was such that the people didn't want to enter. The only possible way to get our people to support a war was to actually be physically attacked and it had to be much more than the undeclared naval war with Germany we had going. You are corrrect in the trade to we had very lucrative trade with both Germany and Japan though we may have started our series of embargos with Japan by this time (Sept. 1 1939). Roosevelt ran on a promise in 1940 of "not sending your boys off to some foreign war". It is interesting to note to that the Conservatives (Republicans) at the time wanted nothing to do with the war.

In the end though the worst case scenario (and the far more realistic scenario IMHO) would have been for Europe to be speaking Russian. Lend-Lease didn't start making any significant impact in Russia until 1943 and much of the material was instrumental in their post Kursk counter-offensives. So they actually turned the tide thanks to their own command and that of Field Marshall der Fuehrer more than any aid. Lend Lease did though expedite their post Kursk offensives and hastened the end. It is interesting to note to that we sent as much material via lend-lease in the last 6 months to a year of the war when the outcome was all but decided then in all the previous years' combined. (I once read that Stalin designed the "Order of Victory" for the war in the fall of 1941. He was both very arrogant but also understood strategic planning.) Their biggest impediment though may have been the purges of the 1930s which decimated their officers.

In the end though the worst case scenario (and the far more realistic scenario IMHO) would have been for Europe to be speaking Russian.

A sobering fact about World War II is that the a huge percentage of the actual fighting in the European theater took place between Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union. And while the 300,000 US war dead are a huge sacrifice, it was 20mm (and by some estimates, up to 27mm) dead Soviets who did the bulk of the fighting (and dying) to crush Hitlerite imperialism and aggression.

It always bothered me to no end that for all the talk of loving freedom and hating the evils of communism it was the fascist nations not the democracies who fought the "Crusade to End Bolshevism".

You might check the June/July issue of World War II magazine. I picked one up Saturday. There is an article on recently discovered data pertaining to the Lend Lease program. According to the article, Lend Lease had a significant effect prior to 1943.

Yes it is. ; )

quote:

You supported Britan with materials and such, but I doubt very much you would have entered the war, had you not been attacked.
I don’t blame you. The 3. Reich was THE most powerful military of its time. They had the position the US has today.
Had Germany taken all of Europe, the US would have trade relations with The 3. Reich.
That is how politics work.

But it does explain why they're rather hyper-sensitive to threats.

I don't think they are being hypersensitive. They are overreacting to an overreaction by the US. The US conducts foreign policy the same way it does most things: like a drunken sailor.

You obviously have way too much time on your hands to be putting out all that. However, if you had read the preceding posts, you would have discovered that WormHeart only mentioned France. Therefore, that's who I was talking about. This is just too much!

Yeah what do facts have to do anything! Dismiss them! We should only rely on hyperbole and ad homminem attacks to make our point and if that doesn't work wrap oneself in the American flag and sing the Star Spangled Banner!

Now I feel like a "real" American!

Dear Sir:
In case you didn't notice, what I referred to was a nearly half page of documentation that RichLP wrote. It surely took time to compile all that. Additionally, the only reference in my post was to France, not the rest of the world. If this offended you, I'm extremely sorry and I apologize.

Probably won't be the last time, though.

No davemiller7, it didn't. I had a ready, handy guide available.

Helps to have resources in reach when needed.

But that list did refute your claim that if a country doesn't love us they will disagree w/ us at the UN... unless you mean the whole world hates us... and, since in some of those resolutions where the US voted in dissent, France voted WITH THE USA.

Great handy guide by the way! What a tsunami of proof to back your point!

If France weren't with us on anything we wouldn't have had any resolutions concerning Iraq. Being an ally doesn't mean being a doormat for US policies.

I have never understood why Condi Rice was considered a genius. Maybe it was her piano playing? It further lowers my opinion of Stanford (my brother's a USC Alum).

Curtis LeMay had our nukes on a hair trigger back in the '50s, and I'm sure his memories of Pearl Harbor had alot to do with it. The Russians have no reason to trust our (unstated & unpromised!) disavowal of a first strike.
Our current White House occupants seem to have been shielded by privilege or slept thru History class, with no abundance of wisdom or understanding; Wars are started by fear & ignorance, something they DO seem to have in abundance.

In my most humble of opinions: I would much rather have our nukes on a hair trigger than to wonder how to fix a broken or missing trigger when the bad stuff begins to hit the fan.

In the 50's there was a level of hostility and active proxy wars. That does not currently exist with modern-day Russia. there is no nuclear missle threat to the US. Again, the US and Russia both want stability and should be working together on the "Rogue State" issue.

-------------------------------UPDATE!!!!------------------------

Cuban President/dictator will not confirm or deny the existance of Russian Nuclear Bomber planes on the island. Moscow, apparently still upset at the notion of the U.S. placing a missile defense system in the Czech Republic and has prompted Russia to make a statement citing they will be landing "...long range strategic aircraft" More here

As reported:
quote:

Moscow is angry about American plans for missile-defense sites in eastern Europe and Izvestia cited a "highly placed" military aviation source as saying, "While they are deploying the anti-missile systems in Poland and the Czech Republic, our long-range strategic aircraft already will be landing in Cuba." Izvestia said this apparently refers to long-range nuclear-capable bombers.

Izvestia points out that there would have to be a political decision on landing bombers in Cuba, and quoted the unnamed source as saying there have been such discussions.
