danielmount -> Deleting old Java Runtime Environments? (7/9/2008 9:03:37 AM)

When I look at the list of installed programs on my Windows XP computer, I see this:

Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_04 - 107 MB
Java(TM) 6 Update 2 - 111 MB
Java(TM) 6 Update 3 - 111 MB
Java(TM) 6 Update 4 - 137 MB
Java(TM) 6 Update 5 - 114 MB
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 - 88.66 MB
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1 - 134 MB

Do I need all of these? Or are all but the current update redundant? What can I safely uninstall?

A friend on another forum answered my questions.

Unless you know you need one of the old versions for compatibility with a specific Java applet, then it's not only okay to delete those old versions, it's actually recommended to get rid of those old versions because they represent a security vulnerability!

Interesting!

What the friend on the other forum told me was that while he wasn't sure if I could delete the old updates, he did know that I could uninstall everything and do a fresh install. That's what I did, and I am quite pleased with the results.
