I love to pray scripture because I feel that when I do I have God's perspective on the important things to ask. For instance, instead of praying for God to "just be with" someone (a prayer that frustrates me although I sometimes use, as with the exception of one place God is with everyone, everywhere, all the time!), I'd rather pray from Psalm 31:20 "In the cover of Your presence, Lord, hide them from the plots of men and store them in Your shelter from the strife of tongues" or perhaps from 1 Chronicles 16:27 "I pray that this person will experience the joy, strength, and rest of Your presence." IF you pray using scripture like this; 1) What scriptures do you pray for yourself in reference to your singleness? 2) What scriptures do you pray for others who are single? (if different) 3) What are some of the most interesting, powerful or exciting scriptures you have prayed, either for yourself or others whether in reference to singleness or not. besiderself

Starting with #1 and hopefully posting about #2 and #3 shortly thereafter... I don't think about, fret, or despair too often about being single. When those times appears, though, and I do start to overthink my singleness and my life, I sometimes pray over the first half of Is 9:26: "My soul yearns for you in the night; in the morning my spirit longs for you." It reminds me that I should desire God above all else, and it's a request that God help me to do that.

When I feel discouraged about something, I remember Psalm 30:5 For His anger is but for a moment, His favor is for a lifetime; Weeping may last for the night, But a shout of joy comes in the morning. Isaiah 40:31 is a very powerful verse for me, and it carries a lot of significance: Yet those who wait for the Lord will gain new strength; They will mount up with wings like eagles, They will run and not get tired, They will walk and not become weary.

It all depends under what circumstances I am praying. This is not a daily prayer, but I declare it often to re-adjust my perspective. Job 38, 39, and the beginning of 40. Here is the beginning of Job 40: 1Then the LORD said to Job, 2"Will the faultfinder contend with the Almighty? Let him who reproves God answer it." 3Then Job answered the LORD and said, 4"Behold, I am insignificant; what can I reply to You? I lay my hand on my mouth. 5"Once I have spoken, and I will not answer; Even twice, and I will add nothing more." There are similar scriptures in psalm and Isaiah that I use as well to an attitude adjustment, it just depends where I am led first. At other times Psalms 91 is where I turn. 1.He who dwells in the shelter (secret place) of the Most High Will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. 2.I will say to the LORD, "My refuge and my fortress, My God, in whom I trust!"

Job 42:2 - "I know that you can do all things, no plan of yours can be thwarted." Pslam 121 - 1)I lift up my eyes to the hills-- where does my help come from? 2)My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth. 3)He will not let your foot slip--he who watches over you will not slumber; 4)Indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. 5)The Lord watches over you--the Lord is your shade at your right hand; 6)the sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night. 7)The Lord watches over you-- he will watch over your life; 8)the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.

These verses have comforted me tremendously during some very dark days of singleness: Lamentations 3:21 Yet this I call to mind and therefore I have hope: 22 Because of the LORD's great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. 23 They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. 24 I say to myself, "The LORD is my portion; therefore I will wait for him." 25 The LORD is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him; 26 it is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the LORD _________________________________ 32 Though he brings grief, he will show compassion, so great is his unfailing love. 33 For he does not willingly bring affliction or grief to the children of men. _________________________________ 55 I called on your name, O LORD, from the depths of the pit. 56 You heard my plea: "Do not close your ears to my cry for relief." 57 You came near when I called you, and you said, "Do not fear." 58 O Lord, you took up my case; you redeemed my life. 59 You have seen, O LORD, the wrong done to me. Uphold my cause! During my divorce and during some of the hardest times after. This particular chapter talks a lot about self-examination, too. God spoke to me through this chapter of a book I'd never much bothered with before. This is another verse, though, that God gave me. You have to understand that after about the third or fourth date with Current Person Of Interest, I was in an absolute panic. I was terrified at the idea of getting more involved, but realized here was a man with real potential. He had said pretty much the same, and we agreed to proceed slowly and cautiously. I was scared spitless. In fact, about three days later, I had just about talked myself completely out of it. I was having one of those railing-at-God sort of prayer times, telling Him "THIS IS TOO SCARY! I CAN'T DO THIS! I DO NOT HAVE ANOTHER HEARTBREAK IN ME! I CAN'T STAND THE SUSPENSE AND WONDERING WHAT WILL HAPPEN! WHY WON'T YOU JUST TELL ME? WHY WON'T YOU JUST TELL ME HOW THIS WILL TURN OUT? OR SHOULD I JUST CALL HIM AND TELL HIM I CAN'T DO THIS CAUSE IT'S TOO HARD? SHOULD I DO THAT? WHAT DO YOU WANT ME TO DO, GOD? WHAT? WHAT?" and other such spiritual, worshipful sort of prayers. I sat there in a huff for a minute. I fidgeted. I fumed. I snatched up a little daily devotional book from Women of Faith. I flipped through the pages to the right day. And. At the top of the page. There it was: Ruth 3:18 (New King James Version) 18“Sit still, my daughter, until you know how the matter will turn out; OK. So. I'll sit.

Sorry for the double post, but I wanted to input another of my own scriptures that I pray before I have to get my very full day started. When the loneliness is bad, I sometimes pray Psalm 25:16. "Turn to me and be gracious to me, for I am lonely and afflicted. The troubles of my heart are enlarged, bring me out of my distresses. Consider my affliction and my trouble, and forgive all my sins." Isn't it neat how the writers of the Psalms seem to voice our own feelings, questions and praises in just the right way? besiderself

CDL; I love that chapter too. I do have my own children, for which I am grateful, of course. But I particularly like to remember verse 4-5: "Fear not, for you will not be ashamed; be not confounded, for you will not be disgraced; for you will forget the shame of your youth, and the reproach of your widowhood you will remember no more. For your Maker is your husband, the Lord of hosts is his name; and the Holy One of Israel is your Redeemer, the God of the whole earth he is called." In spite of the fact that I sometimes stomp my foot and tell God "I DON'T WANT YOU FOR A HUSBAND!!! I WANT SOMEONE I CAN HOLD!!!" this scripture comforts me. I so often feel confused, bewildered and beside myself making decisions for my family, my ministry and my future; I'm so afraid I'm going to do something stupid and ruin it all...praying and knowing that God will keep me from being ashamed is an incredibly comfort and encouragement to me. besiderself

I have a prayer journal that I have about half filled with prayers for my future husband. Among the other prayers I have prayed for him I pray Colossians 1:9-11...though this is one I have prayed for many people I lift up in prayer--it's that good! "...we have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God. May you be strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy," There's a lot of meat here. Should I cease to pray for him just because I've been waiting 9+ years? No...I should never cease to pray for him. He is probably as confused and lonely as I, so praying for him to be filled with knowledge and wisdom and understanding during our time of waiting for the Lord to bring us together is helpful to him, and will stand both of us in good stead if/when God finally brings us together: he'll be that much more wise about our relationship, and that much more attractive to me because of his wisdom. The best way to use this waiting time is to be fruitful for God, so I pray that even in his singleness God will show him ways to do that. And I pray that as we wait for God's timing, my future husband will have joy NOW, as well as patience and endurance. I find patience and endurance hard for myself, so he may find it hard, too. besiderself

These are a couple of verses that have stood out to me the last few weeks. THey thought me not to worry, and to put my hope in God. Luke 12:29-31 29 “And do not seek what you should eat or what you should drink, nor have an anxious mind. 30 For all these things the nations of the world seek after, and your Father knows that you need these things. 31 But seek the kingdom of God, and all these things[a] shall be added to you. Romans 8: 18-25 18 For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. 19 For the earnest expectation of the creation eagerly waits for the revealing of the sons of God. 20 For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it in hope; 21 because the creation itself also will be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God. 22 For we know that the whole creation groans and labors with birth pangs together until now. 23 Not only that, but we also who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, eagerly waiting for the adoption, the redemption of our body. 24 For we were saved in this hope, but hope that is seen is not hope; for why does one still hope for what he sees? 25 But if we hope for what we do not see, we eagerly wait for it with perseverance.

ORIGINAL: CoeurdeLeon And, of course, the verse following yours, Esther and Nadine, is the one that brought me up short the first time I read it. 6 "For the Lord has called you, Like a wife forsaken and grieved in spirit, Even like a wife of one's youth when she is rejected," says your God. God knew exactly how I felt, I didn't need to tell Him. And He was right there in the middle of it with me. **I shoulda posted that last week in the book club thread. That one really speaks to me, too, couer. Especially in the early years. It made me feel like it DID matter to God how sad I was..like he wasn't just brushing me off...that he understood how devastating it was...KWIM?
