ok - so my friends and i have been discussing the "repeat after me" call to salvation that is said after many of the Christian concerts that we attend. one side believes that after you repeat these words that the Pastor speaks and at the end say "I AM SAVED!" you are saved. the other side believes that if you have never heard the Gospel and you repeat these words, you are not saved because of your lack of understanding of what it means to be saved.

thoughts?

And these are they likewise which are sown on stony ground; who, when they have heard the word, immediately receive it with gladness; And have no root in themselves, and so endure but for a time: afterward, when affliction or persecution ariseth for the word's sake, immediately they are offended. (Mar 4:16-17)

If you don’t fully mean it in your heart it doesn’t count.

Bob

I agree Bob, if it is not meant from you the person, it does not count.
So how be it those we have seen doing works, of belief and yet do not enter. And yet those that were thought of as no way, enter into.

Conclusion, it matters not what one does, it matters the purpose for one is doing.
For only the lord knows ones heart, besides the one with the heart.

So the hope is that those that profess also are possessors. And those suppossed newbies will pursue for him for life, not for acceptance or popularity

No one was ever saved by merely repeating words.

The problem with many Christian music acts then is that they really don't have any clue what Christianity really is, if they are promoting this practice.

Acceptance of faith is evidenced by living the life. There is no magical incantation that provides salvation.

I have a very jaded view of Christian bands - many simply couldn't make it to the big times in regular pop or folk music channels, so they wrap themselves in an artificial banner of "Christian" and have a go in that more focused market for music. Some may very well be the real deal, but I believe this to be in the minority.

Don't believe me - try booking an act sometime. There is no interest in faith unless there is someone ready to write out a big check...

Is salvation a one-time experience? A question for a "one-stop" thread, I imagine. I agree with what Bob said - if you say it, and don't mean it, what have you really done? If you get baptized, but don't really believe, aren't you just getting wet?

if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. With the heart one believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth one confesses, resulting in salvation. (Rom 10:9-10 HCSB)

McFatty -> RE: repeat after me... (7/16/2008 2:13:12 PM)

However, it's clear that some people do fully convert in a very short period of time. There are many examples in the Gospels and in Acts of this happening. There's no waiting period. There was no skepticism by the Christians at the time. The new converts were fully embraced.

I agree.

Salvation, being born again, happens immediately. We are being saved from our weaknesses, ignorance, and sin for the remainder of life. And, one day, we will be saved from this mortal body and limited vision of eternal things. So, we have been saved, are being saved, and will be saved.

Lapidoth -> RE: repeat after me... (7/16/2008 3:27:37 PM)

2 Corinthians 7:10
"For godly sorrow worketh repentance
to salvation not to be repented of: but
the sorrow of the world worketh death."

Saying "Jesus is Lord," isn't the same as
confessing "Jesus is Lord." For Him
to be Lord in our life is to obey Him and to
serve Him.

Saying "repeat after me" after a hype concert
or a feel-good church service isn't salvation.

yustme -> RE: repeat after me... (7/17/2008 8:45:57 AM)

God knows the heart,we don't.If the person saying the prayer means it from their heart, they are saved. However, this is when it's so important for them to get into a Bible believeing church where they can grow in the Lord. And I don't mean just on Sunday mornings.

For clarification:

Will you continue in Him in order to keep your salvation OR will you persevere because you have eternal life and are saved?

The first is works, the second is fruit.

Maybe it's just too early for me but I read your first as works adn second as fruit.

Thanks. I guess it was a senior moment. Right words, wrong order.

Salavation (initial sanctification) is both a crisis event and an ongoing process. Entire sanctification is also both a crisis event and an ongoing process. We are to work out our salvation with fear and trembling - Phil 2:12.

Let me get something started here... It's both. There are plenty of verses that urge us to continue. Keep the faith, fight the fight, etc.

LCannon -> RE: repeat after me... (7/17/2008 11:29:19 PM)

There is a point in time the allegiances shift their priorities. At that point, in a moment in time, salvation occurs. 2 Corinthians 5:16-" From now on, therefore, we regard no one from a human point of view; even though we once regarded Christ from a human point of view, we regard him thus no longer. 17 Therefore, if any one is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has passed away, behold, the new has come. 18 All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; 19 that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. 20 So we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We beseech you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. 21 For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God."

Paul amplifies this notice when his asserts in one of the Corinthians that we are 'saved' in a instantly by our profession, are 'being saved' by our obedience His sacrifice/Victory and will be 'finally saved' in fact when we meet Him in Glory.

Exactly, OFH! But I started it already in my post just before yours. [;)]

I have seen this passage referenced twice now in this thread. Does anyone have the specific chapter and verses?

greatdivide46 -> RE: repeat after me... (7/18/2008 1:34:23 PM)

Maybe those referring to the Corinthian passage are thinking of 2 Corinthians 1:10, "Who delivered from so great a peril of death, and will deliver us, He on whom we have set our hope. And He will yet deliver us."

slushie -> RE: repeat after me... (7/18/2008 2:36:06 PM)

I think a lot of those people at those concerts and stuff tend to get caught up in all the emotion "I need Jesus! I'm so sorry for all I've done!" without really really meaning it. And those Christian music artists may tend to take advantage of that emotion. But yes, no one was ever saved by repeating words over and over.

TrustingChrist -> RE: repeat after me... (7/27/2008 1:27:05 PM)

So just what is the plan of salvation that God implemented before the begging of time?

Again, do you continue to fight the fight BECAUSE you are a Joint-Heir with Christ or do you fight to KEEP your inheritance? Do you keep the faith BECAUSE of the new birth or to somehow PREVENT your own spiritual abortion.

Do you remain saved by God's Grace, the grace that redeemed you, or do you keep it by your superior inherent strength of character?

How do you understand 2 Peter 1:10-11, Jimbo? The passage says to fellow Believers that we are to make our calling and election sure because if we do these things we will not fail. BTW, my "superior inherent strength of character" comes from Christ living in me - Rom 8:11 and Gal 2:20.

Do some people get saved that way. I'm sure some do.

However saying certain words doesn't do anything for you. It's not magic. There has to be true repentance of unbelief, turning the Jesus as Lord and Savior.
