Good to see that there is still reason and sense amongst us. It's not enough yet, it would seem from the article, for drilling to actually begin, but as a next step, but may be helpful.

Ditto. Drilling is the quickest way for relief, and we can be working on the othere possibilites to replace oil at the same time. I have never seen it as on either or situation, and do not understand why the libs do. Thanks RC

I really have difficulty understanding the stance of some people on energy. We shouldn't offshore drill because some poorly regulated countries have had trouble with offshore drilling and have polluted. Okay, let's build more nuclear power plants then. Oh, we can't do nuclear power, because of Chernobyl. You know, the disaster where they had NONE of the required licensed personnel available and hadn't done the system checks they were supposed to and then did a bunch of stupid stuff on top of that, so despite the fact that we've had an excellent record in our plants that have been running for decades, we can't do that. Okay, let's put up more windmills. No, windmills kill birds. Solar panels? No, they're ugly and cover large sections of the delicate ecosystem of the deep desert. Ethanol? It releases greenhouse gas and we'll all starve because we're putting our food supply in our cars. *sigh* Guess we should all just go freeze in the dark then. It's about time we threw up our hands and said "we have to do SOMETHING!" and then actually did something. Yay!

Honestly I'm terrified of swimming in the ocean anyway. But, I'm sure that there will be regulations and great care taken to avoid oil spills.

When was the last time we had on offshore rig related oil spill in the US? Even in the midst of Katrina and Rita, the rigs were shutdown and caused no environmental problems. It is much better that US companies subject to US laws be doing the drilling than Chinese companies that can't even keep lead paint out of toys.

I wonder how many of the oil drilling supporters are going to be happy when their kids can no longer swim in the ocean due to an oil spill. You mean letting them swim with the fecal matter and alge and various hypodermic needles, cigaratee butts, fishing hooks, fishing line, general waste isn't enough for you to buy a swimming pool. I live in Florida, have you checked the oceans lateley?

I'm all for windmills and solar power How you gonna get that big windmill on your car? What about sail boats with wheels? I just had a great idea. What can't be create a car that uses sails, I think they already sortof have them, I don't know what they are called. But I think it is used heavily in the desert like land surfing? EDIT- HERE one of these I think I'm going out to buy one today!

If you want an awful lot of wind I think in DC near the Capitol building or White House would put out plenty enough air for decades of wind driven energy needs. ; )

Too bad we won't see a drop of oil for another 5-7 years and even then we will have to compete with China and India since the oil companies are going to sell the oil to the highest bidder. When Clinton vetoed legislation opening up ANWR several years ago, one of his major arguments against was the whole line of logic about how long it'll take, saying that oil won't even reach market for 10 years. Well, heck, that was more than 10 years ago now, so I guess we'd be seeing ANWR oil in the marketplace about now if someone thought forward. I'm not sure if anyone's mentioned it yet or not, but someone surely should come forward with the Democrat slogan for anything related to oil exploration. "We can't drill our way out of this mess" If you're going to disagree with exploration, this is the proper form and phraseology approved of by the DNC.

Drilling is the quickest way for relief No, it's not. Any crude found on the shelf will take years (perhaps as many as 15) to find, extract, and refine. There is nothing "quick" about this path. Not to mention, US oil companies are under no obligation to funnel any newfound crude into American markets. If the price is right, they can easily ship it overseas to Asia where it will have zero impact on domestic prices here at home. The notion of drilling our way out of the oil mess (vis-a-vis Bush's philosophy) we're in reminds me of a drug addict claiming all he needs to kick his habit are more drugs.

I guess we as Americans are just going to have to suck it up and realize that paying $4 a gallon ($6? $7? or more?) is our penance for the gluttony we've exhibited over the past 40+ years, right, Todd?

Actually, there are two new gluttons at the table (China and India) and Americans can't get as much heavy access to oil as they used to. Those days are over.

It looks like the moratorium on drilling off shore may be coming to an end. Too bad we won't see a drop of oil for another 5-7 years and even then we will have to compete with China and India since the oil companies are going to sell the oil to the highest bidder. I wonder how many of the oil drilling supporters are going to be happy when their kids can no longer swim in the ocean due to an oil spill. The beaches of So Cal especially in LA and the OC have always had offshore drilling and in 40+ years I can't remember any oil spill that has shut down a beach. They don't spoil the view all that much either because they are far enough offshore.

They don't have to be over, but we need to drill and refine. Things could have been much better right now if we had drilled and built more refineries back in the 70s, 80s, and 90s. -Dave quote:

See Dave I don't disgree with you on everything! I actually agree with you 100% on that one! We have been adrift without a sound energy policy for decades and both parties are responsible although I give the republicans credit for at least talking about drilling and if Bush ends the moratorium even if it takes a few years to see the results its a step in the right direction.

Hallelujah!! I think this calls for a celebration!! I agree wholeheartedly that both parties are responsible for the mess we find ourselves in. We need to do something soon! -Dave quote:
