I don't like to be lied to about attending a Bible Study only to have a quick "devotion" and then have fellowship time as the main plan. Don't get me wrong, I love fellowship and crave more of it than what I have in my life... but let's not call something Bible Study that is actually a short lecture on how someone else interprets the Bible. Let's call it a social.

I agree! Better to be straightforward about the purpose for the gathering. That way, those who are looking for a serious Bible study group won't be disappointed because their expectations weren't met, and those looking mainly for fellowship would know that this would be a good event for them to check out. Just so I'm not misunderstood, I do think that fellowship is wonderful and needed and worthwhile. I just have been in a situation similar to above and found myself wanting something a little more serious and study-focused.

I was a part of a women's bible study once that decided to eliminate prayer requests. Someone had suggested that we spent too much time discussing prayer requests and praying and we were always going over.

I was really upset with that decision because I felt that our prayer request time was the most important part of our fellowship. I really felt that it was part of how I got to know the women so well, sharing things one wouldn't just share over coffee or dinner. And that praying for each other's deepest needs was most crucial in our becoming close knit. Not just surfacy, "give us a safe ride home and help us keep this lesson in mind...." prayers.

It was at that time that they moved the group too far from me, so I quit attending. But I made sure that the church leader who oversaw all home groups knew that the prayer and prayer request time in the women's group became trivial.
