In another excellent PR move by the Chinese officials, China has now BANNED ALL FORMS OF BANNERS AND SIGNS for fear of "embarrassing the Chinese government over Tibet."

This is such a great PR move that I don't think that China should be worried any more about the embarrassment it may face over Pro-Tibetan signs. I think this ruling should just about do the trick.

Exit question: Do you think that in the initial brochure that China handed to the Olympic Committee requesting that they be allowed to host the 2008 olympics mentioned anywhere that there would be a severe crushing of personal freedoms?

Apparently the IOC has turned their collective heads the other way when deciding China was a good place to host an olympic event!!! Or! They are completely inept.

Of course, the entire US Government turned a blind eye to the lack of personal freedoms and gave China MFN trading status back in the 90's, so I hardly think it's a big deal that the IOC followed suit. Our own US companies ignore what they see while using Chinese labor to build the junk they sell us, so the fact that these Olympics are "made in China" shouldn't raise eyebrows.

Being Chinese myself, I can't say I'm surprised by this PR extravaganza. Growing in such an ethnic household reminds me of how over-emphasized, over-rated it is to focus on saving face, or to showboat one's reputation to near exaggerated theatrics, however shallow or false it is.

And speaking of theatrics, given how there's been lots of op-ed comparisons between the Beijing Games and the 1936 Berlin Games, I can't help but think the Chinese government there is following too close of a model to that of their Nazi predecessors, a la Leni Riefenstahl!*

*something about using the element of theater in German military history, like having the military uniforms designed by fashion designers and movie studios! Yup: Fascism has never been this... fabulous![:'(][&:]

Just saw a story on the news that starting Sunday ALL factories in Beijing will cease operations and traffic in and around there will be partially banned in an effort to improve the horrible air quality before the games. They even anticipate possibly having to shut down a steel plant hundreds of miles away in case the wind starts blowing the wrong direction.

The most outragiously funny technique they will be using is to shoot anti-aircraft shells filled with silver nitrate into the air to make it rain to improve air quality.

Let's put on a different face for the Olympics.

I saw that story and at first thought it was a joke. I would be interested in actually seeing the effect closing factories would do--maybe you'd actually see the sun in the sky without all the haze. I enjoyed China, don't get me wrong, but it was horrible in the polution--it even affected my normal lunged companion. I wonder if they will get strict traffic control on the cars that are allowed to drive--those drivers over there are crazy and you literally see your life flash before your eyes and even crossing the street in a hazard, because they don't let a little thing like a pedestrian crossing (even when it should be legitimately the people's turns) stop them--I could easily see some people being killed during that if they don't take care of that.

But there is just a huge list of things that make me wonder what the heck they were thinking when they chose Beijing. There are just so many things wrong that aren't compatible with an international event such as this.

Sounds like Mexico City as well! But I still see less accidents there in a month than in one day in LA and they drive two inches apart.

I think the Chinese had their proposal before the IOC laced with opium! That would be a legitimate explanation! [sm=silly.gif]

Minutes at IOC selection meeting:

"Wow dude, I'm trippin'. Beijing? Yeah sure whatever man!"

BTW, on another note, since Starbucks closed 600 shops, you're not going to have to change your name to Starbucks280 are you? [;)]
