crissy12345 -> Bible verse suggestions? Looking for one that says to look beyond others actions to their hearts. (7/16/2008 10:22:12 PM)

For instance, if one of my peers at school was always acting up and he smelled funny, I could decide at first impression that he was a mean person and believe that for as long as I knew him. I could even seek vengance. Or, I could decide that I will forgive him if he mistreats me and try to see the world from his point of view. Maybe I would notice that he has a really hard life (perhaps he has a disease that affects his behavior, he is homeless, is starving, his parents are abusive, or something else), and I might be amazed that he is even doing as well as he is.

Does anyone know of any bible verses that go along with this?

Crissy~
You are never to seek vengeance on anyone as thus says the Lord: Vengeance is Mine and I will repay for you.
As a Christian you are commanded to forgive as the Heavenly Father has forgiven you of your trespasses.
Read Acts chapter 11~ The Lord distinctly tells us that anyperson HE puts before you is not to be consider "Uncommon" or "Unclean."

There is an old saying that says when you point a finger at someone, there are 3 pointing back at you!

We are to share one another's burdens and not condemn the person. As it is written: Ther is now no more condemnation for those in Christ Jesus.

You need to study your bible more and have compassion on others. What you are talking about is down right mean on your part.
Do not include Jesus in your misdoings and look for support

Lol, I wouldn't do that to someone. I was just looking for bible verses that say not to treat someone badly just because he is being mean, to turn the other cheek(which is part of a bible verse), and other bible verses for the situation that I gave.

Crissy, I don't really know what you mean or what you are asking when it comes to verses that resemble what you are saying. We should never judge someone by their appearance, because you are right, we don't know what their life is like. Compassion, and kindness are 2 things that come to mind. Your second example would be the obvious choice there, but I don't recall any verses that may help you....other than...

Luke 6:31
Do to others as you would have them do to you.

and.....

Luke 10:27
He answered: " 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind' ; and, 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' "

If you wouldn't like to be treated like you stated in your first example, then don't do that to someone else.

In Colossians 3 we are told

12Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. 13Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.

Hope this helps

Wow, you packed alot into that little post.

But the verses that come to mind are Romans 15:7, "Wherefore, accept one another, just as Christ also accepted us to the glory of God" and Galatians 6:2, "Bear one another's burdens, and thus fulfill the law of Christ."

Does that help?

The one Scripture I recall that mentions looking at the heart is in 1st Samuel yet it says men look at the outside God looks to the heart. Otherwise Scripture says the heart is deceitful and wicked. We are to pray for those that persecute us or revile us without reviling in return. If a person is a brother or sister in Christ then we are to forgive them if not witness to them the love of the Lord. Such as not being one who teases the person and pray and ask the Lord if there might be something He would have you do to help this person. It is possible that the person is one that God will deal with and He may not lead you to be overly kind to the person but that is something you need to pray about.

9 For I think that God has displayed us, the apostles, last, as men condemned to death; for we have been made a spectacle to the world, both to angels and to men. 10 We are fools for Christ’s sake, but you are wise in Christ! We are weak, but you are strong! You are distinguished, but we are dishonored! 11 To the present hour we both hunger and thirst, and we are poorly clothed, and beaten, and homeless. 12 And we labor, working with our own hands. Being reviled, we bless; being persecuted, we endure; 13 being defamed, we entreat. We have been made as the filth of the world, the offscouring of all things until now.
14 I do not write these things to shame you, but as my beloved children I warn you. 15 For though you might have ten thousand instructors in Christ, yet you do not have many fathers; for in Christ Jesus I have begotten you through the gospel. 16 Therefore I urge you, imitate me.

1 Cor. 11

And also:

26 For you see your calling, brethren, that not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called. 27 But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty; 28 and the base things of the world and the things which are despised God has chosen, and the things which are not, to bring to nothing the things that are, 29 that no flesh should glory in His presence. 30 But of Him you are in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God—and righteousness and sanctification and redemption— 31 that, as it is written, “He who glories, let him glory in the LORD.”
1 Cor. 1

Does this help? It puts the shoe on the other foot, so to speak. Isn't it just like God to stand us on our heads and give us another viewpoint? [:D]
