Jae,

It's very common for breastfed babies to have fewer bowel movements after a couple months.

If his stool is still very soft, he doesn't seem in pain, doesn't have to strain to push the stool out, and doesn't have a hard abdomen, he's probably fine.

Grunting and making a face during a bowel movement is fine. We would probably make faces when doing it too if we hadn't been socialized to be civilized. You can tell when a baby is just pushing out a stool or if he is in pain.

My 3 month old guy farts a lot! LOL He doesn't poop everyday either. My sister in law has 3 month old twins and she said they only poop every 2-3 days. Hope that helps.

Mary has a dirty diaper 1-2 times a day. (she is a formula fed baby)

Yesterday she was an eating machine! She was eating 5-6 oz every two hours on the dot.

Hey, Jae!

My little pooper has recently gotten a little stinky in the wind department sometimes. One time DH rolled the car windows down -- hoo-boy! I just chalked it up to his system moving on.

As for his messy pants, he goes about 1 time every 4 days, sometimes more days than that. He has no pain, is totally his same old self, tummy's not hard. He went 7 full days recently with again, no signs of being bothered. In my research I found out that is totally normal for breastfed babies because breastmilk is such an efficient food that sometimes their little bodies actually use all of it and leave very little waste.

In my research it said if the baby gets to 8 days without progress to take him in to be checked out, but our little one went right at 7 full days. Not even an extraordinary, call-the-news-station diaper either. I chalk it up to his system's efficiency. It's been since Saturday now this time. I'm sure he'll get there soon enough.

I also think since it has now shifted to less messy pants, maybe that's why his wind smells sometimes -- he's got stuff IN his colon but not enough to need to get it OUT -- so it just gets a little stinky to let us all know there's stuff in the pipes that's not ready to exit yet.

I have no worries about it but I'm watching the signs if he were in distress. So far just a happy little boy.

Jeanie! I should have just emailed you! I keep forgetting our sons seem to go through the same things around the same time. It makes sense that his wind is stinky if there is something in his colon, but not enough to push out. Just so you know - I wasn't freaking out - I was just wondering if that was normal. Kwim? Feels good to know that my milk is so digestable for him! We are watching because when he DOES finally poo it's a blow out! lol Love you!

Lincoln had tons and tons of hair when he was born. By 4 months he was almost completely bald. It'll grow back, but it might take a while.

Nicole, whole grains have protein too. You can eat oatmeal, or add ground flaxseed to foods. The gas that is caused by beans usually is not as severe as gas caused by dairy. You can minimize that by changing the water several times when cooking the beans. Your body will also adjust to the fiber in beans.

If you aren't a beany person, lentils, split peas, and garbanzos (mmm......hummus) have the same nutritional benefits without tasting like beans.

Avocado has protein too. You could make guacamole and have corn chips. Gluten & dairy free, and very yummy.

(((Nicole))) First GD, and now your son's alergies. You've been on a diet roller coaster this past year!

Yes I am on a roller coaster and it may not stop yet if dairy is not the culprit! Thank you for your hugs
i gave him avacado a few times on his sandwhich but he was screaming at night while he was eating that so I stopped because I thought that was making the problem worse, that was the only new food he was given. I could try it again though to see if it was that or maybe just more of a reaction to dairy or wheat.
Thanks for the tips on the beans. Do you mean like baked beans? Or green beans? The only types of beans/lentils I eat are peas or green beans. I eat snow peas too.

nicole....someone said about beans...I was going to say that too. they won't cause as much gas if you change the water a few times in the cooking of them. rice and beans together make a complete protein. I was also going to say avocados are yum and are a good protein. Someone posted exactly what I would have said....lol. ok, went up and looked...it was prudent...she sure is smart!!!

LOL thanks Sarah
and Lexie.
Do you guys mean green beans? so you cook that and rice? I could do that in a night or two when we are having a chicken dish, he could have the chicken, carrots, rice and beans.
Could carrots give him a belly ache or lots of pain when passing wind? He eats carrots with nearly every meal. and pumpkin.

No ... not green beans ... they are a veggie, not a meat alternative. Things like kidney beans and whatnot are the ones that pair up with rice to make a complete protein. (The beans you would use in chilli)

The other way to get the gas out of beans is to stir in a spoonful of baking soda while they're cooking (not sure if you call it that in AU). It doesn't take much...maybe a teaspoon to a big pot of beans. It will make it very foamy, then you sort of skim the foam off.

kidney beans LOL ok I can't eat those, my mum gave them to us as a kid and I would almost vomit eating those.
those types of beans are not really popular here, not the beans I think you are talking about anyway. Baked beans are popular. They are like kidney beans in tomato sauce in a tin. But I don't like those either.

Baked beans work well too ... any type of bean that would be classed as lentil instead of veggie.

What about Chickpeas (Garbonzo beans) or black beans? I don't really like kidney beans very much, but I don't mind black beans. I add black beans to jsut about anything...casseroles, salads, lasagna, chili, spaghetti...anything with a sauce I throw in some black beans.
I ground up chickpeas and gave them to chase as a meat alternative, never knew to mix them with rice though!

Those were the beans I was trying to think of ... but my preggy brain kept blocking the word!!! (I should have just gone to my cupboards and looked ... I always have some kicking around for vegetarian night)

Oh yeah, Nicole, I was talking about dried pinto beans. When anyone says beans, those are the first I think of.....I grew up on rice and beans and tortillas. Dried black beans are supposed to be even healthier, but I'm a Mexican food snob and turn my nose up at those.

That's my mom's theory. Reagan has never ever farted audibly or stinkily But she has an extremely active colon. Lincoln can almost make your eyes water

We mostly eat cannelini beans or borlotti beans. But I buy them canned, can't be bothered with cooking them.
