My wife sat down with her laptop tonight and realized she is overwhelmed at the 4 years of digital pictures on it. I am looking for a program that will manage her pictures for her, fairly easily - she understands a GUI interface but do not expect her to get into moving files with Windows Explorer.
The files are spread all over the place on the laptop. We need to get them into 1 place.

Any advice?

Ummm... YOU do it? [8D]

I'm curious as to why they weren't all in a central location to begin with.

Google's Picassa...it's free.

It won't actually move them but will present them all from a single user interface in such a way that she may not need to really move them.

Kodak's Easyshare gives the appearance of unifying the locations of all the photos, even when they are scattered in multiple photos. You can download and install Easyshare even if you don't have a kodak camera.

However, Easyshare splits the photos into multiple "albums". In the long run, that's probably the same level of complexity as multiple folders.

Wow That's a tough one!

Right now I have over 4000 digital images on my computer, all backed up on to disc and my hubby's computer as well. That's the first thing I would recommend you do.

Then as far as organizing them goes. I would set up a separate folder in a easily accessed area of your computer and then start transferring ALL the different files to that folder. Once they are there she can label them and organize them in anyway she sees fit. There is a great article in the August 2008 issue of Creating Keepsakes magazine that deals with this problem! Maybe picking up the magazine and turning to page 86 will be all the help you need.

Blessings,

Garsy

Oh PLEASE do not go there!

Basically, she was using different software, sometimes Adobe, sometimes Kodak, and it stored the pics in different places. When I downloaded the pictures from the memory card, I would use explorer and just copy them over to the PICTURE directory. The result being that pictures ended up in 3 different places. PLUS scans of old prints were ins a SEPARATE directory.
Frankly, I do not have time. Just the simple truth. Maybe in November....the weather is nice, the pool needs to be maintained, the garden needs to be maitained....
So I showed her how to move everything into the PICTURE directory. She is doing that now.
I just am looking for a piece of software that will allow her to orgainze and to print them online to the local drug store. She can do that now with what she has, but if she ever lost her laptop she would loose most of her stuff.
Once she has them all in one place, I can earmark that directory as a backup directory and it gets uploaded to the internet during downtime.

She is doing this now - transferring files to the PICTURES folder. And going through them and renaming them. I'll see if I can find that magazine.

That's a great first step! Try a Barnes and Noble book store. They usually have it! Or any craft and hobby store!
