Okay, my SN says it all I think..............but now a little story. Once, in a small women's Bible study group, we went around the room introducing ourselves. I believe I was the last one, and it went something like this... My name is Jennifer. (pastor's wife) My name is Bert. (short for Verta) My name is Janice. My name is Christie. My name is Jeannie. (NOT me, a little Korean lady who took that as her American name) My name is Shelly. My name is Jenny. (again NOT me) My name is Valerie. My name is.....PENELOPE!!!! (yeah, that would be me! I got sick of all the J-names that I decided Penelope would be easier to remember)

Understandable Blue. BTW, this hasn't been mentioned, but it may be a good idea to remember that just because you know a person's first name doesn't mean that it's always a good idea to call them by that on these forums. If the person doesn't mind that's one thing, but if someone doesn't want you to do so (especially if it's been mentioned here) then for goodness sakes please respect that person's wishes! There are a few people here that know my last name too, and I'm thankful that they don't call me by it. That's just TOO much information to share on a forum.

ORIGINAL: bluestone I am a bit paranoid. I had a situation on another forum where someone I did NOT want to "get to know in real life" collected enough of my information that he was able to give me a phone call, and sent me snail mail, and planned to come visit. he got all that from my giving out my town, first name, and where I went to college. so you can call me bluestone, or blue. Oh, good night! Scary. Whew, I am glad I read through this thread. I do use nicknames way too easily, never imagining that this could be uncomfortable for some. My children and grandchildren are all (their first names)-Bear, and at other times, they are Honey, Sweetie, Sugar Bear, Honey Bear, etc. I have nicknames for my husband, too, and I am likely to call certain adult strangers Dahlin', Honey, and Sweetheart. It just never occurred to me that this is unacceptable. I will try to learn to watch my tongue a little more -- and my typing.

ORIGINAL: bluestone my situation happened on a small denominational forum. There were only two churches of my denomination in that town. He called the churches and said he was an old college friend of mine,(gave my first name and the college) but he did not know what my married name was....which our church secretary happily supplied. chance of that happening here are much smaller, but why take a chance? he even knew my dog's name!!! (I had talked about the dog in that forum) This kind of thing is exactly why I never mention my church or denomination, pets names, friends names, neighbors names, siblings names, the type of work I do, what I had for breakfast, etc, etc, etc...

You may call me AWESOME !!!! Seriously, I prefer Diane, but vidimide, vidi, sweet southern belle, lady (like you mean it ha!ha!), "Mom", or anything nice & sweet are just fine, too Yeah, I can relate a bit to Bluestone's experience, along with trying to set example for granddaughter & other younger children in family of things we've discussed regarding be careful in cyberspace ....I'm still debating on avatar with actual picture & things like that..... so yeah, after that I need to add: you may call me "Mrs. Overly Cautious"

ORIGINAL: Kath Sharon-Marie, how do you pronounce SharMar in your head? I've always thought shar to rhyme with mar, but wondered if you think share, short for sharon. LOL Good question, Kath. I think I was on the phone with Karlie (a couple of years ago?) when she was relaying something to me and she said something along the lines of, "and then I thought, Oh Shar-Mar!" She pronounced "Shar" to rhyme with "Mar". It was the first time I had ever heard my nickname verbally pronounced. And it really threw me for a curve! All that time prior, I had, in my head, been pronouncing it as Sha (soft "a" and the "r" being silent) Mar . . . kinda like "ShaMar" But you, Christi and Karlie all pronounce it as "Shar" rhyming with "Mar" . . . so y'all must be right. I've always thought of it as rhyming, too.

Y'all can call me Daniel. On the forums (only) I'll also answer to dm, a nickname that either GVfan or Dinana came up with.

Let's see ... as you can see from my siggy I'm Kara ... I'm also Boo, MamaLady, Preggy, SuperMom, etc ... and most days around 5pm I am "chef extraordinaire" And after reading this thread (and a few of the others I frequent) I think I'm going to have to start making a cheat sheet with everyone's handles and preferred name(s) -- especially once babe comes and mommy brain kicks in even more!!!
