One of the fun things I have done is to make a scrapbook page and laminate it. Then make a double layer cake and basket weave the sides and place the page on top with a frosting border around it. She will love to see herself on the top of her cake and you will also have a nice keepsake.

We had one made for my daughter one year that was like a Barbie doll of one of the Disney Princesses, and the bottom of her ball gown was cake. It was really neat... A lady from our church made it. It seems pretty easy. I don't know where you could find instructions for it though...sorry...but I'm sure with a little goggle search, it would pop up pretty fast.

Many kitchen/cake shops rent pans, as well. I know I rented a Pooh Bear pan when Brandon turned three, and it was much cheaper than buying...besides, what would I do with it afterwards?
The site I linked to in my first post does have a castle cake, btw.

You can make a butterfly cake by baking a round cake, cutting it in half and flipping both sides around so that the round edges are together - then put a row of Oreo cookies in between the 2 sides for the body (or a chocolate bar or something).
I've done teapot and teacup cakes. I've done Princess cakes with the dress like mentioned above. I've done a rainbow cake. I've done a castle cake.
I've done a treasure chest cake. This is easy and quite the hit. You make them out of loaf pans (or mini ones if you want them to each have their own). Cut off a bit of the top - enough to make the "lid" of the chest. Put chocolate coins, candy necklaces and (if it's Easter time), shiny mini eggs as the treasure on top of the bottom part. Put the lid on top. Looks awesome!

So what does your daughter want on her cake? You can look through cookbooks and magazines together and come up with an idea she likes and you can do.
My son has always had very specific ideas as to what he wanted...
age 3: rainbow with pot of gold and flowers (made from m&m's) on a cake with blue frosting
age 4: a cake with grass and a pond--which means it must have an alligator, frog, lily pads, wading bird, fish, duck--in the pond, a palm tree, a bush, flowers, people, a flag and a rocket. And yes, I managed to do it--and every thing on it was edible except the rocket
age 5: his father did the party...so it was a purchased cake and "It wasn't what I wanted" (in a whining voice)
age 6: a hiking cake with a hiker on it that looked like my son (fortunately he was satisfied with me making the hiker out of frosting and toppings and I didn't have to shape the cake into a hiker...)
age 7: specified a cheesecake decorated with a pirate treasure chest.

My kinda girl! I was going to suggest the doll cake too - it's a classic. I actually made it recently with an actual baby doll instead of the barbie. Just cut a bigger hole (saran wrapped and taped up the dolls legs)...it was for my friend's 3 year old. She was amazed!
My kids have had:
dd's 1st - a rocking horse character pan
dd's 2nd - Bear in the Big Blue House*
dd's 3rd - Dora*
dd's 4th - ladybugs, so cool!

ds's 2nd - cowboys, character pan again
ds's 3rd - Thomas - 3D pan with Thomas, Annie, Clarabel, and a caboos
ds's 4th - Thomas, James, Percy, and Lady (because all the kids wanted Thomas and not Anie and Clarabel the year before!)
ds's 5th - sports with the ball pan made as a soccer, basketball, football, hockey puck, etc.
ds's 6th - Star wars - traced Luke Skywalker & Darth Vader on the cake
ds's 7th - Webkinz - I made a picture of all the ones he had (14 at the time) and traced it on the cake)
We have so much fun with this! I've done a castle for friends - 3D with towers, crazy! I even found little Disney princess keychains I put all over one of them. Ridiculous, that was hard.

Thank you all for these wonderful ideas! I'm glad there are other "wacky" moms like me who insist on making their children's unique cakes!! Anything for our kids...
Anyhow, I think I've decided on either a castle or a rainbow. She's so into princesses and has an imaginary castle of her own "down the street", she says.
Last week after it rained there were 2 HUGE beautiful rainbows in the sky. I explained to her about them being God's promise to us, and she's hooked!
So, if anyone has instructions on making either one of those, please post or PM me.

Although Sylvia believes that barbie can be a detriment to young girls (perfect looks and what not) The Barbie doll cake is a favorite with the young granddaughters. You can purchase the cake mold, decorate the cake, secure a plastic baggie around the legs of the doll, insert it into the cake and then create the skirt, the top, you can then have a princess with a rinbow for a skirt, a Bible heroine.
Over the years I have never ceased to be amazed at the creativity of that one cake mold.

Those cakes are amazing, but I agree with Sylvia: I don't really care for Barbies. My daughter's not interested in them yet, so hopefully I can at least put off her interest for awhile longer.

Chelle, if you just get this year's Wilton catalogue, it usually has plenty of instructions and ideas. That's how I learned to decorate cakes.

I could be wrong...but I don't think JoAnn's does Wilton classes anymore. Maybe the ETC stores but certainly not the regular ones.

I think that the classes vary by store. I know some of the Michael's here don't, but JoAnns will. They just have to have somebody willing to conduct the classes. We also have community classes at our tech college which are really cheap. They aren't for college credit, but they don't need to be. Cake decorating and basket weaving and things like that.

I did a bowling alley cake for dd's bowling party. It's on the familyfun website. I have done a space shuttle; two square cakes cut into the right shapes. We did the barbie cake and a Nemo cake. For the Nemo cake I collected the McD's toys from the happy meal and did not open them until we put them on the cake. We have also had a construction cake and just plain cakes with sprinkles.
