Chivalry can make a comeback. I talk and demonstrate to my son how to treat a woman. He is a good boy....forgets but makes an effort. I find the boys raised in the south, the ones that say, "yes m'am" a lot have some skill in chivalry.

We try to raise 'em with respect down here. My sister gets upset with me when I correct her children. Had we not said "yes/no ma'am/sir" we'd have gotten in trouble. I must say the few guys i've dated were the kind to open doors and things.

I love "chivalry", but I want to see it go all the way to the bone. My Ex had very nice manners. Opened doors, walked on the outside of the street, would come around to open the car door, waited until women were seated before sitting down, etc. Sadly enough it did not go all they way through to the heart, it was mostly a "surface show".

But by all means, bring it on!!

another tip courtesy of a local newspaper blogger:
Leave the phone home: Almost half (46 percent) of U.S. adults would “see red” if their date “talks on a cell phone or texts during the date.”

obviously some people are on call or have children that might reflect a need to take a call but i understand ... i don't know if i'd see red but it could make me wonder how much my date was into me if she was taking calls without explanation or txting ...

YES! Ppl talking on cell phones in the presence of your company can get quite annoying. Important calls are understandable, as are calls that involve all parties present.

This goes for more than just dating, too, imo.

I don't normally dislike it when someone I'm in a date with answers his cell. It's when he gets 10 phonecalls and won't answer them that I get annoyed. Either turn it off, or answer your calls.

I've gone on a date where I had someone call me an hour into it so that I can make an excuse to leave if the date isn't going well. I know, I know....not a very nice thing to do.

haha ... good point about balance ... that would be annoying in that other extreme too

another tip they listed, not sure if mentioned in this thread but i do recall it being talked about before: Be nice to the staff: When their date “is rude to the waiter/waitress”, more than four-in-ten U.S. adults (41%) are annoyed.

Being overly nice and friendly to the cute waitresses are annoying too.

I'm just all negative today, lol

lol - well you definately don't want to see your date flirting with the help! i wasn't going to type this last tip as i don't envision any of us posting that we plan to get drunk on a first date but here goes:
Limit your alcohol intake: Being with a date that “drinks too much” would cause 43 percent of adults to get upset.

prairie - take aim at this one ;)

You know what's funny? Well, not really but here it is anyway...

I went on a date with a friend of a friend and he was so BOOOORING!!! I didn't realise it but in order to keep myself occupied I sipped at my wine. Apparently I "sipped" at like, 6 glasses worth! I wasn't schnockered or anything but I definitely made up for his boringness!!!! LOLOL!!!!!!

Ok...you got me there. Anyone that drinks too much to the point of passing out on the floor is a bit annoying. Unless of course we're hiking and I need someone who's drunk enough to feed to the bears while I make my get away.

I am going to preface this to say the radio station I play in the store has John Tesh "with intelligence for your life" on every night.

Anyway quite often he gives dating "intelligence", which I must admit sometimes is pretty good. One thing he says is to pay attention how your date treats the wait staff to make sure he/she treats them nicely.

I think it is very easy to be nice to strangers, esp strangers that are carrying your food/drink, and will only relate to for a few hours, lol. Add to the fact that most restaurants we go to, the serving personnel are drop dead gorgeous (this is common in restaurants in Canada...they hire pretty women to bring in customers) I have never met anyone who is not nice and polite to the waitress. It's not an indication of a man's character. When we're out, we make it a point to find out the waitress's name and have little conversations with them. It's just a nice gesture

I think you gotta pay attention more on how he describes his relationships with people that are close to him, people that he has to relate to on a daily basis, like his boss, his mom, his maid, etc. That would give you more of an indication of his relational skills.

Told you, I'm negative today!

Don't boast that you are not afraid of anything ... while staring your date down for 5 minutes -- without blinking. Don't follow this up by telling your date that you could jump from the roof of one building to another - in a serious tone of voice.

(Yes, I had this happen to me years ago.)

I think the point is that if he/she is rude to the wait staff, or acts like the staff are "beneath" them in some way they will most likely eventually treat you the same way - after all, no one is quite as good as they are, ya know...

I have seen it happen, but thankfully it was never anyone I was with!

I have to disagree about how people treat wait staff. I worked in a restaurant followed by many years in field service and now owning my own business. It is not uncommon at all for people to verbally abuse wait staff, service people and people in stores. I can remember a number of times the waitresses where I worked were on the verge of tears from things said to them by customers. When I worked in field service it was a daily (sometimes 4 or 5 times a day) occurance to be verbally slammed and/or abused by customers. There were a few times customers would even have a physical altercation with the reps (slapping or pushing). Now that I own my own business it is not uncommon for customers to say all kinds of crazy or rude things to me.

Ah...ok..I guess I've never experience that and cannot imagine doing that to anyone. Yeah, I'd walk out on the guy who does that to people.

Here's a couple of first dates taboo. Do not ogle the waitress, or look down their blouse or check out how short their skirts are. I've been out on a date with someone like that and when I spent the rest of the date watching what's playing on TV (we were in a lounge), he couldn't figure why. I told him that TVs are set up in lounges to occupy minds of women who are completely annoyed with their dates.

Another one...don't do the "pull my finger" joke, and resist putting a whoopee cushion on your dates seat.

I don't think there's anything wron with giving yourself an out on a blind date.

I agree that it's better to answer (and quickly tell the caller you can't talk right now) than to let it ring. And people should not call someone several times in a night if they haven't answered the phone. Leave a message or be pastient. Oy.

OR, your date will be considerate and remember to put the ringer on silent so as to not disturb the flow of the date :)
