ZOE!!!!!!

I know you might have some answers so if you are here, please read this!!!!!! My student is on a plane as we speak. He will be here tomorrow at aobut this time and today he sent me an e:mail which said he doesn't think he is going to be able to communicate with us because of his English. He has been taking it in school for 9 years and has had A's and B's from what his transcripts say. He is also already saying that he is sad.

I bought him a sweatshirt from his highschool for a gift for when he gets here. I also got him a book and am taking the kids to build a bear tomorrow to pick out a special friend for him with some sort of basketball uniform for his birthday since it is on Monday, but I so totally nervous about the English thing. I can't believe that after 9 years of it with A's and B's, and his slep(sp) score was pretty high, plus his e:mails weren't bad, that he can't speak the language too well.

Any advice????

On the flip side, one of my friends daughters who I used to babysit for is now a Junior at that same school and captian of the varsity cheerleading squad with lots of friends is maybe going to bring some of them to his birthday party so that he can get to know some people before he starts school, and he will have her to go to at school with problems. So I did do something good there I hope. AND the people at our favorite Chinese resturaunt have already told me that if he has problems with the food, they will help ease him into it by cooking (homestyle) not resturaunt style for just a week or two while he incorporates our cooking styles into his diet.

What do you think?

I would say he is probably just nervous. If he scored well on his test he is probably going to be OK. Be ready to speak slowly and repeat things and explain what things mean.

As for the cooking, I would bet that your rep would probably tell you not to have cooking from his home country. I would try making dinners that don't have strong flavors and that aren't all in one dish. That way if he likes the potatoes but isn't too fond of chicken he will at least have something he likes. FOr lunches and breakfasts have a couple things available he can try: bagels or cereal. peanut butter or lunch meat. Find out when he gets here if he likes turkey or ham or bologna and then get some. Many delis around here will let you try a slice of something first.

Also write things down (and in as few words as possible) if it seems he is not understanding.

I know most learners of a foreign language have much better reading comprehension than listening comprehension.

Just do your very best to let the boy know you LOVE him, and that you are FOR HIM! He should get over his nervousness soon with so much love.

Personally, I am very pleased that he already trusts you enough to confide his insecurities. I think he has got a great host family and he is going to have a great time in the US.

ps Put the closed captioning on your tv for the first couple of weeks. It will help him with his listening comprehension to read along and listen to the program at the same time.
