I think the most negative thing I heard was from my sister in law(who is a ps teacher). She said I would be denying my kids the best opportunity to succeed in life by not exposing them to professional teachers and experts in the field. Now that my kids are grown, both on their own and having awesome success in careers and college and taking total responsibility for their own lives, she has confessed to me that she was "shortsighted" and said we obviously did the right thing for them. Her own kids(same ages as mine) have had a lot of trouble transitioning to adulthood and making responsible decisions, so she has had to face the reality that going through the system doesn't guarantee success anymore than homeschooling robs kids of it.
Funny the change of heart when they see the successes. My dad never butted in or said a negative word to us about homeschooling when he found out we were pursuing that, but he did mention to my mom that he thought it may be a mistake to "shelter" them. The other day someone was commenting on the amazing scholarships our youngest has earned for college and asked where she went to high school. Before I could answer, my dad jumped right in and said proudly "those kids were homeschooled and you sure can't beat the advantage it gave them"

The only negative I can remember was directed more toward me for staying home with my daughter. The other mom actually said the words "I work for a living. I don't get to just ~~~~~ around all day at home!" I was so shocked I actually choked... and then started laughing.
The positive ~ My mom saying "That's great. I've never much cared for public education myself." I had been very nervous about telling her that we had pulled Danielle out of 6th grade.
The best, best, best ~ My daughter saying "I can't wait to home school my own children." WOO HOO!!! That made it all worth it to me.

I forgot my most positive remark.
It was from my mom. She said "I don't know much about homeschooling and how it works, but I am so proud of you for putting everything else aside and dedicating yourself 100% to the girls. You're teaching them something they will never get in school." I never forgot that. It gave me strength on the days I thought about dropping their little tushes off at the nearest school with notes that I'd be back for them when they turned 18.

The most negative that I've had has come from my mom That I am very smart but isn't teaching The kids out of my range that is why people go to school. That I was gonna put my cousin out of work she is going to college to become a teacher.
The most positive so far has come from The UPS man he asked the kids about school and they said we are home schooled and he said to me good for you. Did you know homeschoolers score higher on SATS then non homeschoolers and then he said well if you are smart enough to home school you probably already knew that.

My mother has always attempted to control everything I do, tho I just listen and then ignore her. She vascillates between 'it's bad' and 'it's good' remarks.
I hear so many teens say 'Man! I wish I were home schooled!'

Along the topic of 'remarks', I am careful about the comments I make to my kids about education. I want them to know that there are problems with the system, and what those problems are, but not allow that to translate into an attitude of superiority over individuals who have chosen to use the system.
For instance, they will see kids waiting for the school bus, and comment that they are so glad they don't have to stand out in the weather waiting for the bus, and sometimes we see the kids get into fights, and they are shocked that people act that way, and are grateful that they don't have to endure physical violence on a regular basis. But I don't allow them to make fun of the kids or be snarky about the parents of those kids.

The most negative response was when someone from the church congregation called my dh and was yelling at him about our decision to homeschool and called us all social retards. When she called our children social retards, dh unglued. I thought it was so bizare that it did not bother me, but it did bother dh. She had total disrespect for a person when she did this.
Good comments.... Now that the kids are playing sports, and some through the public school... I am always hearing what great kids they are and how they LOVE to have homeschoolers join their teams.
I think people admire our family "closeness", too.

Kids in p/s here wear pajamas to school, daily.
Nick wanted to know if he can be home schooled for college. Hubby is attending WGU online, so I guess the answer would be ...... yes.

Most negative was probably a work-friend sending a 'throwing-up smiley' on IM when I mentioned I would homeschool my sons (this was before he learned I had been hs'd), though after I explained some he said that obviously I'd thought it out so he wouldn't make more comments.
Best, not sure. Maybe one of the first people I met here who gave me a huge smile and said 'oh, I want to do that when I have kids.' And then asked for info and what it was like and multiple other questions.

 Kudos to you Sunnymom! It really gets under my skin when I run into home schoolers who think they are better than other people  . And it's people like them that help people say the negative comments such as referred to in this thread.
The most negative comment we got, was when we were moving from the L.A. area to San Diego. I was going into my junior year, and into my first year of home schooling. My mom and I had an errand to do and a friends' house so we went, and they asked where I would be going to school in San Diego, and my mom said they had decided to home school, and they laid into her about how parents had no ability to teach their own kids(even though my parents were more educated than that couple, lol).
The most positive thing was when we actually were in San Diego, and I was home schooling, and babysat for the next door neighbor on a regular basis. Although the mother had her kids in public school, she told us about 3 or 4 times a week that she thought it was so wonderful that we were home schooling, lol.
For myself, I enjoyed the friends I met in my home school p.e. that year, but felt left out at youth group. They all went to one of 2 christian high schools, and they excluded me a lot, 'cause I was that one weird home schooler. They started including me more towards the end of the year, but we were about to move away then anyway  .

Well, the most hurtful comments about homeschooling were from my father. He taught in the PS for 30 years so he took my decision to homeschool as a personal attack. However, I think before he died, he had come to realize that I was homeschooling for good reasons--he told me that he knew I would make the right decision about something because "you always do."
I've gotten several comments from a coworker about all the negative things she has heard about homeschoolers, but I mostly blow her off.
Positive comments:
I'm asked how my 7 yo is doing in school, I reply that he is doing second and third grade math together... and people will say, I'll bet that's because you homeschool.
At my father's funeral, one of his former principles was there. He commented that my son (then 4) must be about ready to begin school. I told him that I planned to homeschool. He said that at one time he was adamantly opposed to homeschooling, but now, seeing what was happening in the public schools (where he still worked), he thought I was making the right decision.
Two public school teachers have told me that I am making the right decision to homeschool my son (one of these is homeschooling her own children while teaching at the PS).
A common comment:
I wish I could homeschool my kids, but I'm just not _________ enough. where the blank is either smart, patient, etc. or I don't have time.

I had a PS bus driver once thank me for keeping my kids at home, congratulate me, and bring me a box of geodes! LOL, and she had never even met them.

It may take years, but I'll bet one day you'll be able to look back at this and find that He's done a work in your mom's heart. She's going to see just how wise He was to call you to teach those children. Of course teaching our kids is out of our range. If it was easy, we wouldn't need His help. You go girl!!!
