There are places to chat about books, music, arts, etc. however there is not a place to combine them all. I decided to start a thread for the discussion of:
Literature
Arts
Opera
Classical Music
Fine Coffee
Tea
Wine
Chess
and a little light theology from time to time.
Of course, chit chat and light conversation are encouraged!

This is not a thread for snobs, but for the everyday person who enjoys a bit of the high brow without being a high brow!

This is not a thread for people to tease or make fun of the things we enjoy.

Coffee ~ KenyaAA. I don't know why but I, personally, don't find Kona to be any better but I do find it to be far more expensive.

Literature ~ Anyone who hasn't read The Brothers Karamazov needs to do so. One of the best books ever.

Oh, we were discussing The Iliad vs. The Odyssey in another thread. I loved The Iliad. Not so much The Odyssey.

All that to make sure I'm subscribed.

I just finished reading "The Heart is a Lonely Hunter" by Carson McCullers. Very good stuff, particularly for the time it was written. I recommend it highly.

A couple of months ago I re-read an old favorite, "Lost Horizon". I think in our fast paced world, it would make a great movie. I know one was made long ago, but I think a new one would be good.

Lioness, I have never had really fresh Kona. That I have had I felt had been sitting around for a while. I like the Kenyan too. I don't care for Peruvian. Too acidic.

I'm glad you mentioned The Heart is a Lonely Hunter. I pick it up and put it down every time I go to the bookstore. Now I can plan on not putting it down the next time.

I've had Papua New Guinea coffee that I like. I've found that when the description says something about "bright acidity" I like it. And I like some fruity undertones but not citrus. Coffee is surprisingly like wine.

as far as Southern women authors go, Flannery O'Connor gets the limelight, but McCullers has a way with characters that is just fantastic. She can weave character's lives together in such a dramatic way.

I wondered how long it would take.

Lioness, coffee beans are a lot like wine grapes, as far as the terminology goes. Varietal and Estate coffees exist same as wines.

I didn't realize that. I'm not very knowledgeable about wine so I'll have to go look those things up!

I play, but not very well. I am more literature than math oriented. I have also found that as I age, I have lost a lot of "sharpness" in the game. boo hoo.

I really enjoy Kona coffee. Some of my friends in SG sent me enough to last until judgment morning.

One of these days I hope to try Kopi Lewak, the world's most expensive coffee.

Isn't that the coffee that is umm...run through a monkey's rear? Or is it a wart hog that recycles it?

My research leads me to believe that passing through the digestive system of a cat-like animal both purifies and enhances the flavor of the coffee bean.

My. Well, you just enjoy that, sir.

I prefer coffee without the special filtering.

I actually read a review that said it was not that good of a cup of coffee...just expensive and hard to get.

Would it be so special if YOUR cat filtered the beans for you? You would not even have to hunt across the jungle floor for droppings. Just check the litter box.

Yes, but Kerrlaw supplied a link to listen to them though. I'll put my vote in for the song Move Away. You don't hear that one (like most of their songs) on the radio anymore sans Karma Chameleon, etc.

I am not a fan of chess, Chinese checkers is more my speed!

Currently I am reading Dracula. I always wanted to read it, and picked it up at Salvation Army a few weeks ago.

I am also drinking coffee. I love coffee, and without it, I would be a very cranky MindySue.

I love all types of books - besides Dracula, I am spending my other reading time looking at a book on the Arts & Crafts movement for furniture & architecture. Similar to mission style furniture but a bit more "dressed up".

I love Dracula, and have re-read it many times. What most people don't realize is that the book has a Christian tone to it. Don't curse God, or you may wind up slurping blood for dinner. The book has not been done justice on film, IMO.

I want to collect chess sets, but they are terribly expensive, and take up space.

I used to play online, but anytime it seemed I might win, the opponent would quit the game. Not resign, but just up and log off.
