I'm enjoying the beginning of Dracula - Stoker certainly can make you feel like you're there!

I am not sure. I know the IBM BLUE chess program was beaten years ago. I am not sure if they have one now that is unbeatable. I have Chessmaster 9000, and I certainly can't beat it, lol.

I've been slowly making my way through all the classic literature I should have read in my misspent youth but I haven't read Dracula yet. I'd heard before how good it was but had forgotten.

I tried to get GC to read Robinson Crusoe. I've re-read it because I like it so much. She was not amused.

They just up and quit playing because they were going to lose, Blue? That's pathetic.

I never had anyone who knew anything about chess play or teach me and no one around me all that interested either, though I did take my kids to the chess club each week when they were little.

I don't drink coffee but I love tea. I'm currently drinking a tea from Turkey my son brought back for me earlier this summer. It's quite good.

One of my goals is to read through the classics. I've been downloading them onto my palmtop and reading them there. The only disadvantage to that is that I don't get to have the actual volumes on my shelves. I was really surprised when I read Dracula. It wasn't what I expected. Same with Frankenstein. I love Tolstoy, Joseph Conrad and Victor Hugo.

I really enjoyed Frankenstein. It's not at ALL like what you see in the movies.

Probably my biggest cultural geekiness relates to music. I love classical and I love to sing classical.

Cool thread definately subbing.

My favorite coffee is Illy. It is smooth yet has somewhat of a smoky flavor, not burnt, just a hint of smokiness. I figured out a few years back that if I am buying all kinds of flavored things to put in my coffee, it is probably because I am not buying the right coffee. I love Illy coffee, but it is hard to get and more than my budget can handle, so I drink Cracker Barrel coffee instead, which is also good.

Enjoyed the Iliad, never got through Odyssey, but I going to try again at some point. Right now I am reading Thomas Hobbes, Leviathan. I put it down months ago when some other books got in the way, I just picked it up again. Thank God it has explanatory notes.

As classic book reader, I highly recommend David Copperfield, it is one of my favorites.

I play chess and I was trying to teach my youngest to play but one of the pieces from my marble set got lost in our last move and I have not played since. I keep hoping that it will just turn up somewhere.

Blessings,

I hope you find the piece, Nadine.

I had a marble set but I got tired of dusting it. The x could play but wouldn't. I eventually got rid of it.

When I went to a bigger high school, I was in Chess Club. But then we moved to the back of beyond and the only thing going was Future Farmers of America.

The chessmaster games you can buy for computer have very good teaching modes, if you are a beginner or moderate player looking for instruction. Of course, if you are expert, it has levels for you too.

I really like Dracula better than Frankenstein. Has a real team spirit thing going on.

I love opera and classical music. I don't care for the story line from Carmen, but I love the music.

Baroque is considered corny and overdone, but I love that period of music, and poor old worn out Mozart is my favorite. The Brandenburg Concertos are wonderful. For pure fear factor alone, his opera, Don Giovanni.

Any other fans of Phantom of the Opera? I have sadly never seen it live, but I really loved the movie version and the music is to die for!

The story is more of a soap opera, but the music is sublime.

I liked the old old Phantom of the Opera movie with Claude Raines. I did not like the new one as I generally don't like to have an entire story sung to me. LOL (which is why I'm not much for operas, I guess)

Well my favorite coffee has to be Tanzanian Peaberry or a Sumatra.

Lioness, its no wonder you like Kenya AA, its often described as a "winey" coffee.

As far as tea, when I worked in the coffee shop we had this one that was a honeysuckle citrus that was divine! I wish I could remember the brand it was.

I don't play chess.

I love classical music, theatre and opera.

I just finished reading "Wuthering Heights", which to me didn't end quite like I thought it would.

I may just have to get a copy of Dracula.

Do I pass the test?!?!

Terri, you pass, if indeed a test were given.

Yay! I must say that I have a love for classic sounding voice such as Josh Groban, Charlotte Church and Andrea Bocelli. I love listening to Italian Arias.

Phantom of the Opera is coming this season. I hope to go see it. We actually have a great season this year. I'd like to buy tickets for the season, but its $400 and I can't swing that right now.

Wuthering Heights is an interesting story.

It's the only story I know of where you absolutely can not STAND the hero or the heroine and yet you keep reading because you want to find out what happens to them - and you just don't feel sorry for them because they're both a couple of selfish jerks...yet, you are drawn to them.

Kind of like the theology folder, I guess.

Heathcliff is a jerk. But he's a magnificent jerk!

Seriously, he's one of my favorite characters from literature. In a case study sort of way, but still.

I got to see the Phantom on Broadway and it was worth every moment. A beautiful story and great performance.

Thing 1 is big into chess but he lacks the patient to teach his old mum how to play.

I agree with Mindysue. Wuthering Heights was about the two most self centered people around. I hoped the giant dogs would eat them.

The last time I saw a show on Broadway, it was Barnum. Which shows how old I am, and how long since I saw a show in New York.
