I like Kona but Amaretto is my favorite coffee.

I haven't read Mary Shelley but I do love Jane Austen and Edith Wharton.

I have never played chess.

I love the old Black and White movies of the 30s and 40s. Bette Davis, Norma Shearer, Joan Crawford, etc. One of my favorites from the era is The Women. I've heard that is a remake now too, with Meg Ryan among others.

I love Celtic music and my favorite album, of any I own, is Celtic Voices:Women of Song.

quote:

A couple of months ago I re-read an old favorite, "Lost Horizon". I think in our fast paced world, it would make a great movie. I know one was made long ago, but I think a new one would be good.

I've seen two, the one from 1937 with Ronald Coleman, and a horrific musical with Peter Finch in the lead role and Sally Kellerman. None of them can sing, it really was terrible. I was young, only 18 but I learned then and there that remakes are rarely as good as the original.

Which is why I hesitate to see The Women.

One of my favorite old movies is "Now, Voyager" With Bette Davis. Even if you don't like Davis, you may like this movie.

Mousy spinster with controlling mother turns into bombshell with married lover.

I have seen it, and you are right, it's very good. I just got around to watching Jezabel, for some reason I could never get into it but I do like it now.

I know she has a lot of classics but one of my favorites is one called The Old Maid. I still cry my eyes out at that movie.

I watch All About Eve every time it is on.

Sams had a boxed set of 9, I think, some of which I've never seen so I'm looking forward to it.

She seriously was gorgeous in that movie.

Have you ever seen Mr Skeffington? I enjoyed that very much. Loveless marriage to an older man, or he looked older anyway.

I could probably go on about the different movies of hers! Looking at the extensive list on IMDB I think I've only seen a third of them.

I'm telling elastic (you may not know her), who lives in NYC (as does my daughter).

You need not fear my daughter. elastic is another matter.

Where is elastic anyway?

She was overwhelmed at work all last week and I don't think she gets online much on weekends.

Nevermind....Kath and Blue type a lot faster than I do.

Has anyone else noticed that NASCAR is getting more like the World Wrestling Federation every day?

I love Andrea Bocelli, Celtic Women - especially Meav. Their voices are simply amazing!

And how, exactly, does that fit in with the topic of culture?

I loved Phantom of the Opera and Les Miserables, though the strobe lights of one gave me the worst migraine I've ever had and I wound up at Emergency as a result.

David Copperfield--I managed to buy a very old, used set of the Complete Works of Charles Dickens and read through all of them. I love his characters and the descriptions of places and scenes.

Any other fans of Phantom of the Opera? I have sadly never seen it live, but I really loved the movie version and the music is to die for!

Yep I love it too. I have never seen it live either.

I like a bit of classical music as well. Beethoven is one of my favourites.

I also love coffee. I drink moccona when I can afford it.
Coffee prices have gone up. It's $5 for a large Latte in NZ now.

So, is southern culture off limits?

I do too. PBS reran one of their concerts a few weeks ago.

I found a coffee at Starbucks that is very good. Guatamalan Reserve. Very smooth and low acid.

I hope you find the piece, Nadine.

Thanks, I will probably replace them eventually. I looked online at a set of just the pieces that were exactly what I want, but they are very pricy.
I love my marble board but I never really liked the pieces the are carved and kinda chunky, very masculine, so I won't really miss them.

Kath,
Norma Shearer and Joan Crawford had a bitter rivalry, and did not get along at all during filming.

Of course, it paled by comparison to Crawford and Davis.

Seems Miss Crawford could not get along with anyone, but adored her fans and would by her fan club members gifts.

If you see Hush, Hush, Sweet Charlotte, you get to see aging Hollywood at it's best.

Bette Davis, Mary Astor, Olivia de Haviland, Joseph Cotton, and Agnes Moorehead. Moorehead and Cotton were also in the Mercury Theatre radio productions together.

I have a frosted glss set someone gave me, but it is difficult to play. I have a folding wooden board with weighted men. I love it for play.

I have that on my Netflix queue.

Oh, I have seen the frosted glass ones, very nice. Not so good to teach my 8 year old though. If I did get one it would probably would not get much use, I'd be afraid of breaking a piece.

I made a chess board in 7th grade shop. I am probably the only girl to have ever received an A from our male-chauvenist pig of a teacher. I actually gave it to my brother since he gave me his shop project (a pretty wooden box). He better still have it or I will have to hurt him...

In other news, I also love a lot of "classic" artwork: from Michelangelo to Monet. When I was a teenager, I was blessed to be able to take a couple tours in Europe and see things such as the Sistine Chapel (beyond amazing!) and such. We stopped in Florence where Michelangelo's "David" was but we were late and didn't have much time. Another gal my age and I were NOT going to be in Florence and not see that masterpiece so we literally RAN through the streets of Florence to the museum, sped walked through the museum and just about passed out when we finally got to see it. Wow! Amazing. I have pictures but I don't think I can post them...

Sadly, this gal and I were the only people on the entire tour (half teens, half adults/seniors) who saw it. It was worth every step of our run though.
