I used to play chess a lot. I also smoked a pipe. These two things go together very well.

When I stopped smoking my pipes, chess wasn't as much fun. I found that I was impatient and preferred to play speed chess (or more properly, semi-speed chess) with a one minute time limit on moves.

I have several boards and sets of pieces, none of them particularly distinctive or valuable. My favorite board is leather, and I prefer to play with weighted pieces. Also have a magnetic board and pieces.

weighted chessmen make a huge difference..unless you are in check and wanted to send the board to the floor

I also have a chess clock. Might be time to get it out and see if it still works.

My girlfriend bought me a computer chess board in 1978 (you move your piece and the board blinks to tell you where to move the opponent's piece).

I plugged it in last year and it still worked.

I love my Jane Austin movies: Sense & Sensibility, Pride & Prejudice & Emma. However, reading Jane Austin makes me want to stab myself in the eyeballs...

I have a chess anger problem, or at least I did in my younger days, so I don't play anymore.

If you see Hush, Hush, Sweet Charlotte, you get to see aging Hollywood at it's best.

Bette Davis, Mary Astor, Olivia de Haviland, Joseph Cotton, and Agnes Moorehead. Moorehead and Cotton were also in the Mercury Theatre radio productions together.

Is that the one where Davis and de Haviland are sisters? I think I'm getting it mixed up with another one. One sister was an aged childhood star maybe...

In other news, I also love a lot of "classic" artwork: from Michelangelo to Monet.

I used to have a Monet screensaver but it was for W95 so it won't work on XP.

I used to have a Monet background on my computer then we were switched to terminals and I can't figure out how to change the background. I need to find out. They changed it to this really bright blue that gives me a headache...

Kath, you're thinking of Whatever Happened To Baby Jane - Bette Davis and Joan Crawford were sisters. Baby Jane was a child star and then Joan her sister had a "super star" career and then Joan's character was hurt and Bette had to take care of her and they hated each other. It was awesome and very campy.

Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte was with de Havilland, but they were not sisters - I think they were cousins or something. Another awesome awesome movie.

Joan Crawford got along with nobody -- I don't think she even liked herself. :*

I am not a big Joan Crawford fan (and I honestly don't understand why gay guys like her so much...) but I do like several of her movies. I think I like Bette Davis a lot better. I've seen many of her movies and the only one I didn't like (it bored me to tears) was the one where she was Queen Victoria or Elizabeth or something ....I fell asleep twice trying to watch it so I gave up.

In hush, Hush, Sweet Charlotte, they are cousins.

AND at the beginning of the movies, some boys are being mean and daring a little kid to go into the house. That little kid is the boy named Gil who visited his aunt for the summer in To Kill a Mockingbird

In real life, as an adult, he contracted AIDS and passed away.

I love reading Jane Austin. Every other year or so I do a Jane Austin marathon and I read all of her books consecutively. I would do it more often but there are so many other books I am wanting to read. I usually follow-up by watching the movies.

I was saddened to just now learn that Hillman College, alma mater of Dr. and Mrs. Heathcliffe Huxtable (the Cosby Show) was fictional.

She is 82.

Wasn't she a friend of Truman Capote? I think that I saw that in a movie.

In the South, women used to be named their mother's maiden name many times.

Harper Lee, Carson McCullers, Flannery O'Conner are examples of the famous women whose names bore the tradition. I happen to think it is cool. Men would have the Mother's maiden name as a middle name many times.

Two of my boys often use my maiden name as a middle name for themselves even though they had not been given it at birth (sure wish I had thought of it though).

I think this would fit into the topic of this thread. I just read an article from the BBC about a recent, very exciting archaeological discovery. You can read about it here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/7580745.stm Some enormous statues from the Roman era have been unearthed in Turkey. The latest discovery is pieces of a statue of Marcus Aurelius, one of the so-called five "good" emperors who was also a philosopher. The head of the statue, found intact, is three feet in height. That is one large statue! Hadrian and one other emperor have also been found in the same location, as well as two wives. They expect to find the remaining wife next year.
