but is was still a good book.

I like George MacDonald, too, Nadine. I haven't read many of his books, the novels are sort of hard to come by in my experience. But the ones I have read I've loved.

A current author (well, in the last 30 years or so) has rewritten many of George MacDonald's books which can be found in Christian bookstores (or at least used to be). I think his name was Michael Phillips but I could be wrong. He basically took out all the circuitous language to make the stories more palatable for today's readers.

Black Stallion just makes me cry.

One of my sons went through a horse phase when he was young and I read every single one of the Black Stallion books to him (there are a lot!). I really enjoyed them. John Grisham is awesome.

I read The Good Earth several times years and years ago. What stands out in my mind is how she was working in the field when labour pains began. She went back to the house to have the baby and then took the baby and went back to the field to continue her work. Sheesh! That's one tough woman!

Of course, Fup is in a class by itself as far as novels with an animal as a primary character.

BTW Lion, I finished Sandworms of Dune this morning.

It is my favorite of all the series, nudging out Heretics.

The writers aren't as "deep" as Frank Herbert, but it was exciting and moved along well. The best thing is that it wound up everything nicely.

It would make a good movie, more so than any of the other six in the series.

Cool. I'm vacationing away from Dune for a bit but, since you liked them, I plan to read the two new ones soon.

Yes you are correct, Michael Phillips has "translated" several of his novels. I have most of them. One that I just got recently is called Curate of Glaston. It has 3 of his novels in it. I prefer to read it in its original form online. It's just not the same when all the Scottish brogue is removed. You can find most of his novels and some of his published sermons online at;

Project Gutenberg

Why doesn't this surprise me?

My favorite is Sir Gibbie. I even named My dog Sir Gibbie. Have you read it?

Whoa. Thanks for that link, Nadine. I'm of the same mind you are, a re-write is not the same. I kinda like the circuitous language.

Not yet but now that you've told me he's your favorite, I will. I'm fond of Robert Falconer myself.
And I've been thinking lately that I want to reread Lilith.

I would read Donal Grant before I read Sir Gibbie, even though Sir Gibbie is my favorite. It introduces you to Donal Grant who is also a character in Sir Gibbie.

My next favorites are

The Wingfold Trilogy

Thomas Wingfold, Curate
Paul Faber, Surgeon and
There and Back

The characters in this trilogy are incredible. Especially Polwarth, he reminds me of someone here on the forums.

You realize, of course, that now I have to read it to see who you're referring to?

I've read:
Malcolm
The Musician's Quest
The Tutor's First Love
The Maiden's Bequest
The Minister's Restoration
The Laird's Inheritance
Lilith

I think that's it so far.

As far as not fiction, one of the best is "the Day Lincoln Was Shot"

On another book note, after being told I MUST read the Twilight series, I ordered the first three books from Amazon. Supposed to be about a nice vampire who does not feed on humans. I am sure it is not great literature, but sometimes ya just need junk food for the brain.

LOL, Blue, my daughter just started reading that series. Her friends said she MUST read them too. Of course, most of them are obsessed because the movie will be out this winter (I think) and the main character will be played by Robert Pattinson, the actor who played Cedric Diggory in "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire".

GC and I read the first 2. I don't know if she read the 3rd one or not.

I haven't read them (because I haven't had time to read much of anything but textbooks and BIBLE), but I enjoyed the movies....

They are well-enough written to be junk food for the brain of intelligent people. I would say the writing was about on par with HP (although I only read the first HP).

I personally like Lemony Snicket.

My daughter and my DIL love that series. Linz went to the book party at BN for the last one in the series. She decorated a teeshirt with Edward's name on it in gothic type letters. Larry said on his way to work sort of by the bn that he passed cars with girls dressed up and screaming about something. She said the place was packed, she had the best time!

To my knowledge, they are for any age, but the teens really seem to be loving them. My daughter has just started Twilight and she seems to like it.....I tho't about trying to read them.

Blue, I think teens are attracted to the romance of the stories but no, I don't think they are specifically targeted with teens in mind.

Like someone else said, sort of like the Potter books. Teens and adults liked them.
