phosy,

My aunt was in a coma and showed no brain activity for weeks. They took her off of a ventilator to let her die. She woke up nearly 2 days later and lasted a few more days. Anywho, just a consideration.

I know this is a different situation because it does not involve a terminally ill person, but would you (general you, btw) condone removing a ventilator from a paralyzed person who can only communicate by blinking and nodding?

Two good points.

1) WesP's aunt wasn't ready to die. They took her off the ventilator, she continued breathing, her heart continued beating, she woke up and then passed later.

2) A paralyzed person is not the same as a person with no brain activity. So no, I would not consider removing a ventilator from the person. If they asked me to...well...we'd have to talk long and hard about it.

More thoughts:

My great aunt who used to nurse people who were dying told me (when I was quite young) that she frequently was told by the family to just allow death to take place and would give only water to the person dying. She said this was a common practice among those who kept family at home to die. (We're probably talking about the 1940-50's.) There seemed to be a comfort and acceptance regarding death that is often lacking today.

Since I'm not sure what you mean by awake, I would say that was either direct intervention of God (Praise the Lord!) or the fact that dying is not at all like the movies or what you see on TV. My grandmother lived for an entire month and they (the doctors and nurses) literally had no idea why her heart kept pumping. I took care of another gentleman who hung on for about a month literally on deaths door.

By the way, it is extremely common for people to seem to get much better and be much more alert shortly before (usually a day or so) death. I can't tell you how many times, someone was on deaths door then "perked up" only to turn around and die a day later.

Because they were paralyzed? No.

I agree. Most people now simply do not know about death - not in the intimate way we used to. We get our cues about death from on TV and death is NOT like you see on TV. It's actually a big reason I believe there is a push for euthanasia. As well as the extreme efforts to keep a dying body "going"... We are so afraid of it, we don't want to face it and call it "undignified". I did a lot of hospice care and I can't think of one death that was "undignified". By the way, that word irritates the living daylights out of me...
