How does one define the difference between a "hymn" and a contermporary worship song?

DaveW: It's arbitrary. Old hymns were contemporary once. Take care. quote:

This is my favorite part of the song. "You see the depths of my heart and You love me the same"

The Apostle John said": "We love him, because he first loved us". The song/hymn has a similar sentiment. quote:

ORIGINAL: faroukfarouk I know the first hymn you mentioned, but not the second. God bless. quote:
ORIGINAL: wbporter One of my favorites is Breathe on Me Breath of God--the tenor part sounds almost as good as the melody. Our choir director introduced new hymns as anthems in the evening service, but the only one I remember is Lord, You Have Come to the Lakeshore. It was in the 1989 version of the United Methodist Hymnal and is a translation from Tú Has Venido a la Orilla. On Google a minute ago I found this link to someone playing it on an organ.

How does one define the difference between a "hymn" and a contermporary worship song? Imagine a magnificent room filled with proven, worthy, and valuable treasures, shining, gleaming, entrancing. In the middle of the floor, we see a bunch of children who are indifferent to the splendor all around them. They are busy playing with disposable plastic trinkets. Does that summarize the situation?

These are lyrics to a song our associate pastor wrote, although obviously a ton of scripture, which is the reason I like it. You are terror to the night, sword of justice in your right hand You are fearsome to the sight, the gentle Lamb, the famous "I AM." I tread lightly in this place, holy ground I firmly stand on, You're the lion never tamed, everything was formed at Your Word Yet, you called me your friend. Oh, to hear the voice of Jesus, frees us. Chains are broken by your spoken word Oh, in the presence of the Saviour, forever Heaven sings of a wonderful God of love Hail the Great "I AM"

Makes me tremble when we sing this It is Well With My Soul When peace, like a river, attendeth my way, When sorrows like sea billows roll; Whatever my lot, Thou has taught me to say, It is well, it is well, with my soul. It is well, with my soul, It is well, with my soul, It is well, it is well, with my soul. [edited for copyright purposes]

My favorite hymns: The Solid Rock I Stand Amazed He Leadeth Me Great is Thy Faithfulness Be Thou My Vision My Redeemer (Never hear this one anymore. I don't know why) Victory in Jesus Someone earlier asked why all the great hymns are old, and a couple people suggested theories, but I have another one: the test of time. I'm sure there were as many hymns being written years ago as there are worship songs being written today. The really good ones, the ones that spoke to people and brought them closer to the Lord, are, for the most part, the ones that lasted. The songs that are written today are written in a different style and they aren't called hymns (yet), but I imagine that some of them will still be being sung in a hundred years, and they'll still speak to people, such as "Here I am to Worship" that has the really awesome lines in it, "I'll never know how much it cost/ To see my sin upon that cross."

ORIGINAL: PopsiLufsJesus I don't think I have heard of Fairest Lord Jesus, but I didn't grow up in a church that used hymns... Perhaps this will refresh your memory: Fairest Lord Jesus, Ruler of all nature, SOn of God and SOn of Man Thee will I cherish, Thee will I honour THou My soul's glory, joy and crown. The lyrics in the following verses are even more beautiful - the tune is a Sicilian Folk tune.....very pretty.

Blessed Assurance and my favorite line is "oh what a foretaste of glory divine!" Because the Holy Spirit dwells with us, we literally do have a foretaste of glory.

I have a lot of favorite hymns, but i'll narrow to these which have specific meaning to them: Balm in Gilead ( was the first hymn to speak to my heart) Are You Washed in the Blood of the Lamb (reminds me that i need forgiveness & it's fun to sing) I Have Decided to Follow Jesus (sung at the church where my family was baptized) Sweet Hour of Prayer (brings me back to prayer again if i ever stray) This Is The Day.. Which The LORD hath made (this song is good for playing in my head when troubles come) This Little Light of Mine (another good play in my head song) Every morning i like to visit this website and it has a hymn of the week with a special audio message for each day of the week. I've learned quite a few new hymns. Songs and Hymns.org It was fun to read everyone's favorites.

I am assuming the treasures are the hymns and the toys are contemporary worship? Then, how old does a song have to be before it can be treasure; and can nothing worthy of being a treasure be composed today?

Three songs that stand out, and i'm not sure if they would all be considered hymns or not... but here they are anyway: Amazing Grace, I'll Fly Away, Down In the River
