actually, I've not seen many (American) Catholics that still cover. MUCH more common in Europe Cath churches I've heard.
You hit right on scottishmama! Being humble before God and our mate is a BIG part of it.
Keep reading the scriptures over and over.

Here's an online Bible you can look it up on, Teresa if your Bible is on the other side of the house or something. Link HERE.

it might be as when i was a kid remembering the old movies and seeing people walk into the churches (cath) covering thier heads.
but if the word of God says that we should do this as a way of being humble to God and then to our mate's i need to learn more and pray about this.

There's a post early on in this thread with links to articles about head-covering.

OK. question that just came to mind. Is that why Nuns' habits include the hood?

Cool, feel free to ask questions...some people get hung up on the part where he says her long hair is a covering...I know I did at first.

Does anyone here cover at nighttime too? I've heard of that, but not met anyone who does it.

i am still studying about the head covering i read 1 cor and it does talk about men not covering thier heads but women should cover because it shows that women should be reminded that the man was made for women not the other way around.

I tend to agree. I think I heard/read someone somewhere who said that in bed her husband was her covering...I'm not sure exactly what that means though.

Ryanne, could you cover with something that is a little inobtrusive? A wide ribbon or headband, a pretty scarf wrapped nicely, or something.

Josiah was concerned for a while that my covering was kind of a "spectacle". I don't know why. The first Sunday we were there the bishops wife was up on stage in a massive, bright purple, wildly feathered hat. My little white covering was nothin' compared to that particular spectacle.

LOL!!!!!

So.............hello everyone.

I've been thinking seriously for the past few weeks of getting a tiechel to wear to church. I've read through all the thread, and the common reason for covering seems to be in relation to your husband -- does anyone cover for different reasons?

I ask because my reason for (possibly) covering is different. The more I read the Bible (all of it at least once a year, some of it much more) the more I see how much we have lost a reverence for the Word and I feel the need to bring that back. I don't necessarily feel "called" to cover, it's more something that I want to do to show my reverence for the Word. Does that make any sense? I don't think I would be disobedient by not covering, but I think it would be honored if I do. Would anyone feel that takes away from the "real" reason for covering?

I brought it up to my hubby and he had a few questions, but the more he thought about it, the more he liked the idea I think. My hair is black and silver, so a black tiechel with silver threads would blend in quite nicely and probably not even be that noticeable from far away. I have hip-length hair so I don't know that I would pull it all up into a bun (my hair is VERY thick and heavy, even a ponytail gives me a headache) but a tiechel would cover a good portion of it even left down.

I don't know, just looking for thoughts. Thanks gals.

i know that this head covering has me thinking and if God is expecting us as women of God to do this well i just might start doing this. i am letting my hair grow long, because i was reading in 1 cor that a women's hair is her covering and it's a shameful thing for a man to have long hair.
so i too need to pray and study on this.

I used to. I know the particular churches my Mennonite and Brethren friends are in, it's a requirement. (One of the reasons Josiah could never tolerate being a member in those churches ). The use white kerchiefs.

I think that's a sweet reason. And ultimately, the headcovering is a matter of reverence towards God in prayer, even though Biblically it is couched in the relationship between a husband and wife. I covered long before I was married, because to me it's *firstly* about my relationship with God.

I would think covering at night for a married woman would not be healthy for the marriage. Even if no one else gets to see the hair that is the woman's glory, the husband should certainly get to. If he never gets to see his own wife's hair, he his eyes may begin to wander to other women's beautiful heads of hair.

Christina, thanks for the link..I'm going to look into that further...I really don't like hats, but I have sisters that didn't like it when I put a doily on my head. That might be a great alternative.

Maggie, did you grow up Mennonite? And are you and Josiah Mennonite now?

How would they enforce that?

BTW, Maggie, I was wondering...does Josiah want you to cover, or is it more just your own conviction, and he's just like "Whatever floats your boat?"

I think that it is JUST FINE if that's the way it is, I am merely curious.

My mom and I DO believe in covering our heads (for worship services, that is)...but we also know my dad would freak out if we didn't do it..so we sort of have a dual reason for covering (again, just in church services).

While showing my submission to my husband's authority is a part of my wearing a head covering, it's not the first reason. I covered my head before we married. It really is about drawing myself closer to God. I feel so humbled wearing one when I come before Him. It shows my respect for His authority over me.

I've mentioned before that my hair is my glory given to me by God, but when I come before Him, I need to put my glory away because it is about His glory, not mine.

Actually, my husband is pretty neutral about the head covering. He just expects me to wear it in church, but more because the church expects it. At home, if we're in study and my head isn't covered he doesn't ask me to.

There are people in my church who feel that I should be wearing hats and because I'm not I'm not covered properly and they've asked me to go back to wearing hats. The pastor has said it's a non-issue because the hats are really just a cultural thing and if you look at the time that 1 Corinthians was written, the women covered their heads with a veil/hood.
I really don't like hats either, plus I just don't feel that it covers me how I want to be covered.

I've always thought (my personal opinion ONLY) that hats draw MORE attention to the wearer. Or maybe that's just a remnant from the time I spent attending a black pentecostal church. Now those ladies knew how to wear a hat!

See that's the problem, thats the background we come from (my goodness you should see my MIL's hat collection!) In our church the hats are pretty low key though.

I cover my entire head with a scarf, and Dh pointed out to me that if we were going to get technical about the coverings, then mine should be more of a covering than a hat since only part of your head and hair is covered by the hat (but Dh and I don't care to get technical.)
