My mother in Daphne, Alabama went out to my Uncle's house in Saraland for a few days. Her area floods quite easily (you can see the beach from her house) and she IS 76 years old. They have a generator, in case of a power outage.

Glad to hear it.......

I just saw there is a Mandatory Evacuation Order from Alabama Governor Bob Riley and EMA for Baldwin Co. I'm so glad she went on her own and didn't have to fight the traffic over the causeway and through Mobile Tunnel.

I actually heard about that earlier this morning and wondered about her - but am very glad to hear she did that before being ordered.

Thanks! We were at church and with the time difference, we were gone before it was announced.

If she were younger or not alone....... I'm glad they're all together.

Thanks for all the info and sharing your expertise.

No prob! God gave me this passion to help people, and if this is one of the ways I can do it - I'm going to take advantage of every opportunity I get - even if it's only to help calm frayed nerves. But, you'll find out quickly - I will correct erroneous information - so that everyone is on the same and correct page.

There's so much going on this year! Great for geography, map skills, etc.

http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/

As of this writing, Hanna is now a hurricane, Ike follows behind as a TS with three other possible cyclone formation areas in the same area.

Lisa.....question for you......they keep saying on the news that they expect east tx to get tons of rain dropped on them and they expect major flooding...are they referring to all of east tx, south east tx, or north east tx? (I am asking because my mom said she was going to a friends if the got the mandatory evacuation call...and she did so I am assuming she went. She said she would go back home if there wasn't any flooding. She forgot her phone though and I have no way to contact her, so I was wondering about how long are we talking here for flooding in SE TX)

SE TX should be fine - it's going farther north......

South Mississippi checking in. We are still under tropical force winds, but dying down fast. I have a few trees down and some neighbors lost shingles, but otherwise not too bad. We lost power for 8-9 hours, but have it back now.

There was a lot of coastal flooding...not sure how bad, I could never get the TV to tune into any stations well enough to tell much. Hancock Co, which took the brunt of Katrina is also the hardest hit by Gustav, but there is flooding across most of the coast.

Gustav has tropical force winds covering almost as wide an area as Katrina, though the hurricane force winds only extended out about half as far.

People in or who have friends and family in Louisiana--I'm still praying for your/their safety. Please check in and let us know how everyone is.

Thanks for letting us know! Yes, continued prayers for all in the path of the storm - especially once it begins stalling out and just dumping copious amounts of rain.

I spoke too soon...we are still experiencing high winds and rain from Gustav--outer bands. I really feel for those in LA where this thing is located. It's slowed down considerably, and if it really does the currently forecast cut back east, they could experience quite a bit more rain.

Lets hope Ike follows the "historical" paths and curves back out to sea.

Lisa, a reporter on the weather channel said we haven't had so many systems active at once since 2001.

On the whole, are we seeing systems increase or is this a normal cycle of events? I ask this because of those silly remarks from public people saying these storms are 'God's wrath'.

Clusters of storms go in cycles......we're in an active cycle right now. There are MANY events that must happen simultaneously throughout the world for it to happen (I don't remember them all) so evidently they're happening. It's not a real big deal since many of the storms will just remain at sea.....but, we always have to keep a watchful eye to the tropics from June 1 - Nov 30 each year - and even some time before and after those dates - as we've had systems in nearly each month of the year!

We'll also see times of little to no activity - even in the same seaon - so it's not uncommon - at all. Things to look for, though, are El and La Nina's - as that has a big impact on the storms.
