My intent is to eat candy.

I don't think Satan is the originator, humans are, as they are every holiday, and, in fact, the calendar itself.

Mmmm...Reese's peanut butter pumpkins. *swoons*

Don't forget the bat cookies!

My motto in buying Halloween candy is to get my favorite kind then pray no trick-or-treaters show up...

I'm going to try and not be intimidated by all the 3, 4 and 5 star members.

Well it's like i'm at a swimming pool and the water is cold -- i'm going to jump right in!

I do not celebrate Halloween.
Peter 1:13 Therefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and rest your hope fully upon the grace that is to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ; as obedient children, not conforming yourselves to the former lusts, as in your ignorance; 15 but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, because it is written, “Be holy, for I am holy.”

I am not here to judge nor change minds, just to offer up what i feel speaks to my spirit.

Jesus said, in Matthew 5: 13-16 “You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men. “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven."

QUESTION: Do you feel you can still be salty and celebrate Halloween?

Romans 14:13-14 Therefore let us not judge one another anymore, but rather resolve this, not to put a stumbling block or a cause to fall in our brother’s way. The Law of Love I know and am convinced by the Lord Jesus that there is nothing unclean of itself; but to him who considers anything to be unclean, to him it is unclean. Yet if your brother is grieved because of your food, you are no longer walking in love. Do not destroy with your food the one for whom Christ died.

QUESTION: Is it possible that even though it does not grieve your spirit that you celebrate halloween, it possibly may cause confusion or disillusionment to some brother or sister who has yet to come to Christ or who is new in Christ and is weak?

Jesus said in Matthew 18:6 “Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to sin, it would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck, and he were drowned in the depth of the sea."

QUESTION: Along the same lines, are we putting too much confusion unto our little children expecting them to understand that we are to the light of the world and set apart but yet we participate in a holiday that is known for witchcraft, ghosts, demons etc.

Well, that's it -- thanks for taking the time to read.

Welcome resting. You can be assured no one looks at the stars.
Just the heart expressed in the posts. You've got a big heart,
so pour it out.

I don't know. I've handed out tracts with the candy. There's always an alternative.

that is like those who pass out crayons... but for-petes-sake, don't pass out the cheap ones! they are lousy to color with.

You are new here. So, be careful which alternatives you suggest. It is said by some, all days are equal. But, to paraphrase Orwell from Animal Farm, some days are more equal than others.

Tracts don't make much of an impact. Do the neighbors see you treating them with love in your heart and respect or do they see you as the religious nut who passes out tracts (not saying that this is a bad thing... just something to think about). Growing up there was a lady who fussed that I shouldn't be playing with troll dolls (back in the late 60's). She meant well but came across as a religious nut.

Somewhere there is a balance... not being worldly man pleasers and at the same time holding to our convictions yet being approachable and open to our community. Jesus had the balance and He was understood so I don't expect to hit the mark all of the time. Days like Halloween fit into the struggle to balance category.

car2ner, i can't believe it took me this long to realize what your user name is.. cartooner, right? Sometimes i can be sooo slow. I agree balance and love for our neighbor is the best way of reaching people. Jesus could connect with the most unlikeliest people. I must say your posts are always thoughtful and have a sense of light heartedness while being meaningful. (From the Christmas post, i meant to comment that i noticed you kept up on commenting on all of the special days of the year like summer vacation day begins. I was waiting for the "Back to School Day". )

back to school day is tough. Not everyone goes back to school on the same day. Even here in Georgia, differant counties go back on differant days.

and lol, cartooner, not someone who installs stereos in vehicles....(grin)

My dad taught me how to change spark plugs and stuff. I used to work on my 1972 camaro. I drive a 1992 Ford Ranger and can name many of the parts in there but when I look at new car engines now, I'd have to let the mechanic handle it.
If I really wanted to, I suppose I could go to the air force base and use the car shop there. Maybe one of these days I'll go change my own oil, just to stay in practice.

I can draw a nifty picture of a guy tuning a car

You know, I kinda like the crayons idea. The little ones would like it, and the ones old enough to shave would be reminded who trick or treating is for! Well, candy is for all ages, but trick or treating should have some sort of age limit.

We can make the parents happy by passing out a gallon of gas.

The only trick-or-treaters who came to my house last year could have driven to my house...

Then you need to draw a line on your door about 4 feet high with a sign that says, "You must be shorter than this to trick-or-treat here...

I'm offended that armydude wants to exclude my rather tall seven-year-old (he's already 4'4") from ToTing at phosy's. Wait... this is the wrong thread for being offended, isn't it?

it happens to you too???

I don't mind a teen coming to trick or treat so long as they play the game, put on more than just a red nose and NO PILLOW CASE! sheesh!
Sometimes a teen is taking the younger kids around and I don't mind them getting a bit of sweets for their effort. But scrounging for the most free candy possible, not so cute.

Now that we have moved I have no idea how much candy to get. It's not that I want to support Halloween but to be neighborly.

Halloween around here is pretty quiet. Most kids are too old to go ToT and the little ones' parents are too concerned about the latest 20/20 story on razor blades in popcorn balls that they just go to grandma's house to ToT.

I remember as a kid, the streets were full of parents and kids and it was like a big block party, but not anymore...

What we do at Halloween is just tell the trick-or-treaters we don't do Halloween, but if they come back in 6 weeks time and sing Christmas Carols we will give them something then.

4 lots came back last year, it was nice. (especially as we're talking about non-Christian children)
I gave them big chewy cookies and a little bit of money.
