Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin seems to be John McCain's pick for V.P. and I'm thrilled. She's a young mother of 5 who is still breast feeding her youngest, a son who was born with Down Syndrome. "Trig is beautiful and already adored by us. We knew through early testing he would face special challenges, and we feel privileged that God would entrust us with this gift and allow us unspeakable joy as he entered our lives. We have faith that every baby is created for good purpose and has potential to make this world a better place. We are truly blessed. " This choice of a conservative, Christian, pro-life lady has given me hope for the November election. 'Drill in Alaska and go do it NOW'. Sarah Palin

I don't know much about Palin yet, but all I've heard I am greatly encouraged. And way to go McCain for choosing a lady! As a strategy choice, this will greatly help him with Democrat crossovers and the swing vote, which just happens to be this year: middle-age women! j

I began reading about her when her last son was born. She's very pro-family (man and woman). She's super pro-life. She's energy smart. She fishes and hunts. Her husband is a fisherman.

From what little I have read about her now she appears to be the most pro-life candidate ever to run for the Presidency, not only rhetorically, but with her own personal choices. And that signals that McCain is serious about a pro-life Presidency. I think McCain knocked this one out of the park.

I also find it poignant that her oldest is deploying to Iraq on Sept. 11th.

Personally I'm happy with his choice, because it make the dichotomy between the two camps even more clear. On one hand we have the "change" duo--two Washington insiders--going up against a maverick Republican and the governor of Alaska (you don't get much less "inside" than that). I imagine the campaign ads from here on out are going to grow even more...interesting. And as an aside, what in the world are the CINOs who've gone weak in the knees over Obama going to say now? This race has suddenly become very, very intriguing...

I agree Jack and John!! Her 18 year old son joined the army on 9/11 2007. He chose the day as a symbol of why he wanted to serve our country.

I didn't think anything could get me excited about voting for McCain ( I was going to vote for him anyway), but his VP pick did it.

It's interesting to me that it appears he chose someone who is CURRENTLY (as in not yet cleared) under investigation for an inappropriate personnel decision. With this (if she is indeed the nominee), I'm sure the investigation will be swept under the rug, but it just seems like it paints a BIG target that neither Mr. McCain or Ms. Palin need in what is already a very tough election cycle.

Not yet cleared also means not yet proven.

If you actually read about the issue, you can see it is so minor that only partisans will take note, if they can explain it to anyone. Palin is considered one of the cleanest candidates out there, Dem. or Rep.

I guess this puts the "experience" issue off the table with this V.P. pick. I've never heard of Sarah Palin which begs the issue of whether conservatives will want an unexperienced, untried female just a heart-beat away from the presidency. Given McCain's age and medical history it will be interesting to see this one played out. Kudos to John McCain for chosen a woman (albeit an unknown one). I don't believe this will win him the presidency, but it will help with the "old, white and male" republican image.

I think it's a very good political pick. I'm impressed with her but, have to say, I just don't think it's appropriate for the mother of small children to be jumping into something like this - especiall not one with special needs. Having had a very good friend with a Down's baby, I'm sure the Palin's have done the reasearch, but wonder if they appreciate what lies ahead for them and their child. This is a baby, not a talking point. That's my only real hangup iwth her. Hopefully her husband, older children and maybe the baby's grandparents can all team up to fill the void and, hopefully McCain will stay healthy! Eight years from now, I'd call her the PERFECT choice. The age of the baby (and her second youngest) is really my only hangup with her. She's impressive, I have to say. And, as I said first, politically, I think it's brilliant and agree it just made this election a lot more interesting!

No, I'd never heard of her before a few months ago but it's not like he pulled this out of thin air. It's been a very real possibility for quite some time. I'm not surprised at all.

Not likely to be "swept under the rug" considering this political environment. According to Wikipedia, quote:
In response to Palin's statement that she had nothing to hide, in August 2008 the Alaska Legislature hired Steve Branchflower to investigate Palin and her staff for possible abuse of power surrounding the dismissal, though lawmakers acknowledge that "Monegan and other commissioners serve at will, meaning they can be fired by Palin at any time." The investigation is being overseen by Democratic State Senator Hollis French, who says that the Palin administration has been cooperating and thus subpoenas are unnecessary. Seems like even the Democrats in the legislature consider this "investigation" much ado about nothing.

I have been watching Palin for several months now. As a conservative who is familiar with the woman I have no qualms about her being next in line.

Palin is considered one of the cleanest candidates out there, Dem. or Rep. That is partially my point-this election will be decided by die hard partisans and a very large undecided vote. As we saw in 2004, Swiftboating (while detestable) can be a very effective means of swaying the undecided voter. In a pick with ANY whiff of scandal (even a small one-and remember, scandal size tends to be judged from one's perspective-a small scandal to a conservative can be huge to a liberal and vice versa), Mr. McCain "put the Swiftboat in the water" against himself so to speak it would appear.

I find it ironic that people who advocate for an unexperienced, untried male for President, would criticize a veep for the same reasons.

Sen Obama talks about the need for "change" in Washington DC, denounces Sen McCain as a Washington insider, and yet picks a career politician in Sen Biden. Sen McCain however picks someone from outside the Washington DC political scene. Someone who is well respected (over 80% approval ratting in Alaska), and stands for everything that the GOP claims to stand for. And now you critisize him for picking someone "unknown". Again I thought this was about change and changing Washington DC. I believe Gov Palin can do just that!
