Oh, no! My "boys" are my referee friends who do games in MLS and other places around the world. One has two girls (and just moved from Chicago to southern CA - and truly IS a professional referee) and the other lives/works in Brooklyn - and they're expecting their 3rd child (and first girl) in Oct.

The main problem I have with the thread, (and to be truthful with most Calvinist churches) is that the people spend so much time defending their own position that they never seem to be concerned about advancing the kingdom of God. So I can really only stomach a couple weeks of it at a time before I have to take a couple week break.

Hey, John. Thanks for the generalization above through which you just judged me and your fellow brothers and sisters--and incorrectly at that.

Did you intend to imply from that generalization that the freewillers on the C/A thread are somehow advancing the kingdom of God through their posts?

How are you advancing the kingdom by posting in the singles threads?

How are you advancing the kingdom in your personal life?

Did you remove the plank from your own eye before posting this comment?

Do you know what censorious means?

I apologize in advance for the harshness of this message, but your words and your attitude are way out of line.

Not to take the thread further off-topic, but I look at it this way: the Bible clearly teaches predestination. It also clearly teaches personal responsibility (i.e. free will). Therefore, both must be true. I realize it seems counterintuitive since they seem mutually exclusive, but that's only by human understanding. Remember, God is one, yet He is also three. Also something that doesn't rightly make sense to us for both to be true at once, yet we accept it because that's what the Bible teaches.

God and His ways are bigger than our understanding. We just have to take Him at His Word. And not let what we think we know divide us.

-Robb

P.S. To go back to the topic, I've been chatting, posting, and coughing up a storm tonight.

Wow - this thread was active tonight! Lisa - I hope you were able to finish your work (I know that you weren't feeling well.) I hope that everyone who is sick feels better soon!

I watched the Bucket List. Nice movie and sentiment - characterization is strong although there were some things that happened in the movie that didn't seem to line up well. For example, I can't see that Morgan Freeman's wife would ever let her husband's ashes be buried on the top of a mountain with Jack Nicholson's in a coffee can - but I guess it is a neat, tidy, ending. I liked Freeman's character and his commitment to values. I loved the camera work - it was so subtle - this gentle pushing in of the camera - a nice slow dolly shots - so simple and perfect for this movie. But when you have two seasoned actors that can use their faces to convey a variety of emotions - I would think that you would want to focus on that. I saw this other movie yesterday called Premium. Not a family friendly film. But artistically ... there was a freshness that I really enjoyed and it worked on so many different levels. I'm still thinking about it what the director (Pete Chatmon) was saying with the film. So much! I learned a lot about watching this movie and hope to apply it in my own writing.

Anyway, back on topic - sorry to be so geeky and analytical. I fell asleep earlier tonight - but was awakened at 2:30 a.m. by a party. Had to ask the neighbors to keep it down (which they did immediately) and I've been trying to get back to sleep ever since. I'm finally tired enough to do just that so I'm going to bed! I've got to be at church at 9:30 though.

Anyway - I hope everyone has a blessed Sunday.

Hey, John. Thanks for the generalization above through which you just judged me and your fellow brothers and sisters--and incorrectly at that.

Did you intend to imply from that generalization that the freewillers on the C/A thread are somehow advancing the kingdom of God through their posts?

I apologize for the generalization (generalizing is an area that I still have trouble with). I should have said "most people" as there are some (such as yourself) who are not so confrontational and defensive as the rest.

Please note, however, that there is no adjective separating "free willers" out from the rest of the "people" on the thread. The tone of most of the posts from both sides reads "You numbskull, you wouldn't even see the truth if someone smacked you upside the head with it"

quote:

Recharging and learning. I've learned far more about how to reach people here than I ever would on C v A. For most folks confrontation to that degree just doesn't work.

quote:

How are you advancing the kingdom in your personal life?

I try to be a good witness for Christ, sharing the Gospel when He gives me the opportunity, sharing His love whenever I can. (and of course working in the church itself)

quote:

Did you remove the plank from your own eye before posting this comment?

I've tried to keep my posts, even the ones tonight, non confrontational and non-accusatory. I never claimed anyone was not a Christian because they believed (or didn't believe) anything. Can you point me to one where I was out of line? I'll go fix it.

Yep. But haven't a clue how it applies here.

No apology needed. We need to keep each other in line from time to time, it keeps us all aware of how we are coming across at least.

(Great post #57 Robb!!)

What am I doing tonight?

After attending the evening service, I'm going to bed early I hope. I still don't know if the Girl has school tomorrow and I'm still beat from yesterday. We walked the railroad tracks down to 16th street (about 4 miles round trip) I was doing OK until I had to carry her most of the way home

Thank you, John.

You failed to grasp what really bothered me from your post, though--your inclusion of "and to be truthful with most Calvinist churches" and only explained your comments as directed towards most of the C/A posters.

What did I do last night? I mourned and celebrated the loss of my dad a year ago. After praying and crying with my mom for a while, I decided to mosey over to the singles threads.

Hey! Look at this thread. I bet there are some friends being silly in that one. Just what the doctor ordered.

What did I see? Most of my denomination being put down--and by a person's assumptions that are based upon minimal exposure (How many times have you attended a Calvinist church? How many different Calvinist churches have you attended?) and little information (How long have you known about the five points? How long have you studied Reformed Theology? Does your study include the activities of Calvinist churches?).

What am I doing tonight, as in right now? Educating John about the Christian Reformed Church.

From the official web site:
Our Mission
As people called by God,

We gather to praise God, listen to him, and respond.
We nurture each other in faith and obedience to Christ.
We love and care for one another as God's people.
We commit ourselves to serve and to tell others about Jesus.
We pursue God's justice and peace in every area of life.

Our Vision
The Christian Reformed Church is a diverse family of healthy congregations, assemblies, and ministries expressing the good news of God’s kingdom that transforms lives and communities worldwide.

The denominational churches support both Home Missions and World Missions through dues (similar to a church tithe). The denomination also witnesses through other denominational organizations such as Christian Reformed World Relief Committee. The churches also support local missions work through financial support and personal involvement. The majority of our benevolence collections go towards specific missionary causes--this above and beyond our congregational dues to the denomination's organizations. We develop and participate in outreach activities in our communities (A handful of children were saved during VBS this year!). Do I need to continue?

Calvinists take scripture quite seriously (I'm only speaking of Reformed Theology here--not in any way implying that people holding other interpretations don't take scripture seriously). We know about and gladly choose to obey the Great Commission. We do so out of gratitude to God.

He saved us. He tells us to spread the gospel. We willingly and gladly obey.

To make a blanket generalization to the contrary about the majority of people who hold Reformed Theological views is irresponsible.

***
Yep. But haven't a clue how it [censorious] applies here.

I wasn't referring to your posts over there. I was refering to your post in here.

I also wasn't accusing you of claiming anyone wasn't a Christian. I was pointing out to you how irresponsible your incorrect assumption about Reformed Theology and evangelism/witnessing and the self-righteous attitude contained within your assumption about the C/A posters (not being able to "stomach" the posts over there--are you more humble? are you wiser? are you more intelligent and thereby able to see more clearly than those others? are you working out your faith in a more holy manner? do you never strongly defend any of your opinions in the singles folders?). That's where the plank and censoriousness came into play.

And I write that knowing full and well that I'm guilty of it more times than I'd like to admit...

Grace and peace, John.

****

What am I doing tonight?
Spending time with my mom.
Resting.
Reading.
Perhaps discussing and defending the doctrine I hold in the C/A thread.

Oh I see the problem now. It's my fault. I was imprecise in the cause of brevity.

First I should have explicitly defined it as most C churches that I have experienced or heard of. Secondly I should have defined the problem as them preaching Calvinism before they preached Christ.

And it is this same attitude that strikes most of the posters in that thread. "C" or "FW" above all.

The reason I can't stomach it is because I am too easily drawn into that same confrontational mindset. And while in that mindset no one learns anything. So I need to step back and cool down.

Please except my apologies for my poor communication.

I have been praying for you and your family on this. I remembered that it was near this time.

What am I going to do today?

Read my bible (Have to get my daily reading in), do some laundry, and take a well deserved nap.

Re: C v A thread...*shudders* I used to spend time over there, being of the Reformed (but closet Charismatic) persuasion. But I left. That place is skeery...can we just all agree that no matter your denominational persuasion the practices of name calling, flaming and general snarkiness toward one another is not the way to be a witness to Christ. Proper theological discussion is fine. Ugliness and division is NOT fine.

Tonight I will take part as sort of the MC to our 5th Sunday Night Sing. The good part of that is that I will not have to listen to the preacher. Please pray for him. This morning he used the phrase "I want you to" a record 41 times. This is driving me nuts.

Tonight I will be meeting up with another CWer (Joy) and her friend to go to dinner and then I'm going to attempt to take them to some dunes and hope I don't get lost. We're going to watch the sunset over Lake Michigan....of course that's a common occurance for me to see but it's still breathtaking everytime.

Tonight I'm going to take a break from work and try to de-clutter the house a bit. Amazing how much stuff accumulates in a short amount of time. I've put on some praise & worship music from iTunes to keep me going, and have my projects lined up. My list is as follows:

* Assemble a bistro seat... one of the legs was broken and I had to order another. It came in, and now I'm putting that together -- DONE
* Cull old shoes - DONE
* Piece together an antique pitcher that was broken - ALMOST DONE
* Re-arrange my closets
* Re-arrange the utility closet
* Wash curtains
* Make piles: a) thrift store; b) take to mom's; c) dumpster

There's more to do, but this is just tonight's project.

Ok, I finished with the closets and have made a lot of progress on the pitcher. There's still enough time to tackle the utility closet. I've also cleaned out the refrigerator so I can go shopping tomorrow. But here's another task that I just had to do... I mean, someone had to do it! I'm cleaning out all the sugary-stuff from the pantry, so I just had to eat the last three pieces of chocolate.

Any particular reason? Actually, I was inspired by your post in the chat thread the other day. I thought "wow, what a woman!" I need to get off my lazy behind and get some work done!

How are you feeling this evening?

Wow - you did so much tonight! The chocolate was a good reward :)

Sounds like everyone is doing some interesting stuff this evening, from watching youtube to having dinner with a CW friend - to taking over the world (pinky and the brain :) And Shallbe - how did the MCing go tonight?

I am really beat. I cooked the meats w/ sauce that I'm going to use for the week. I shopped and went to church. I also did some homework tonight. I read an article and I need to be prepared to facilitate discussion on it on Thursday. It cites some interesting neuroscientific studies, but I have some reservations because usually the studies have a small number of participants (usually 5 or so people) and only include men. Men's and women's brains are very different in terms of the way we process information (women use their whole brain - men tend to use targetted isolated sectors at a time depending on what they are doing.) I think it is amazing how God makes each gender so different! I'll reread the article tomorrow and try to dig into it; hopefully I can finish preparing for the class tomorrow morning.

I also created a syllabus for a class that I'm taking and according to it - I've got to start doing research for a technology survey that I want to complete within the next three weeks. There is a book I've been dying to read (McKee's "Story") - I've only read snippets - but I want to finish reading it this semester along with this book called "The Writer's Journey." I think they will really help me with my writing. I've also started working on doing the background reading and literature review for my thesis. My subject is so little known, that there isn't a lot that is written. This is good and bad - good because it is easy to know the topic thoroughly but bad because it means I'll have to do a certain amount of original research (interviewing people etc.) But I like meeting people and interviewing them so it might be fun. And since I'm doing a primarily artistic work - I just need to find stories for the most part - which are pretty easy to elicit. I want to have my proposal done by the end of this month (very aggressive schedule) so I've got tons to do.

I'll have a full day tomorrow. In addition to emails, homework and thesis work, I've also got to work on some music and a dance routine (I'm a HORRIBLE dancer) for my job. Next week, I've got to get working on my writing business too - I have a long list of hosting providers that I need to start checking out so that I can get to work setting up my website while I work out a business plan. Actually - I need a plan - a good schedule that will help me to not be overwhelmed with all of this stuff that I have to do!

But, right now, I'm going to relax - go over the sermon I heard today - read my bible a bit, then go to sleep. TBN has a biblical movie on tonight that looks interesting - so I might take a peek at that.

I can't believe how much you got done....all that cleaning is making me tired, lol. All I did was vacuum, which didn't turn out well because i ended up vacuuming my daughter's puzzle pieces so I had to dump the bag and look for them...ewwww!. And I organized my vacation pictures and all our other hiking pictures this year.

And watched the movie called Everest...the first Canadian expedition. It's to be continued tomorrow night...i hate that.

Now, I'm going to get some studying done....I hope.
