Anyone else watching this at all? They are showing a real lot of classic videos. Some are familar ones and others are ones that time forgot! They are doing it in an A to Z format.
Speaking of VH1, is Mark Goodman the only VJ who is still around too?

I watched a little of it but they were showing more pop singers, like Debbie Gibson and The Go-Go's. I had something to do and couldn't continue to watch cuz' I would have like to have seen The Clash, Psychedelic Furs, Simple Minds, or The Cure. Sorry to you 80's hair band fans, I can do with out them. Some of their videos are kinda cheesy.

Don't forget Nina Blackwood too! And you mean Adam Curry and Alan Hunter as well!
Their list is all over the place, which isn't such a bad thing at all. They even are playing stuff that was completely forgotten about! I mean they played videos by Roman Holiday and Regina last night! But they also played videos by Ratt and Quiet Riot also.

Yeah, I meant to mention him also!
As far as having cable, while it is nice, it only by in large is only worth it when they have these specials on 3 day weekends. I am pretty much considering dumping my cable TV very soon, but I digress.
They just played Van Halen.

I would get cable if I could order the channels I wanted instead of having dozens of channels of garbage.
I have a videotape of 80s music videos packed away somewhere. What's really cool is that you can now find so many of those old videos on youtube.

I have a slow DSL connection and can't stream video...grrrr. It may be time to bump up the speed.  Some of those playlists look really cool.

I switched to cable internet in part because of DSL being too slow. There were other reasons too, however when cable offered a deal I jumped at it! My old provider has tried to woo me back with so-called better prices, but with all things considered I am just sticking with my existing service instead.

Had a chance to watch for a little while today. Got to see a video by Utopia (Todd Rundgren's band) - "Crybaby", which I had never seen before. Also saw Stevie Ray Vaughan's cover of "Superstition" - a really funny video involving a devious black cat that reaks havoc on the members of Double Trouble and a cameo apperance by Stevie Wonder himself at the end. Excellent!

Yes, they are playing a gammit of everything! They are in the W's now, however I am kinda waiting for them to do the X's, they when they hit the Y's, you know that "Weird Al" Yankovic will be on that list too! 
A couple of notables:

One thing that I did notice when doing the W's, they skipped Wilson Phillips, go figure. I guess they do not consider them as popular as they once were, or maybe while I was resting I just missed them instead?

They hit in 1990 not in the '80s. ; )

I really do not know, I think it has more to do with how radio consolidation has changed things and squelched creativity instead.
Creativity in video in my opinion died around 1987-88 or so. Videos just didn't seem nearly as interesting by that time.
And on Wilson Phillips, I knew that they came out back in 1990, I just somehow didn't make the correlation of it no longer being the 80's for some bizarre reason. I became confuzzled.

I think that is why the creativity of videos is dropping. It is no longer as useful for promotion. How many copies did A-Ha sell of their record because of the cool videos. Or ZZ Top (although the videos, though cool, enhanced their iconic images like the car, the girls and the beards more than anything). Do you think any band sells music today based on the video, at least on the level that they did in the 80s when videos were a novelty.
There are still some cool videos. As I Lay Dying has some good ones. Iced Earth did that neat cross of real person and animation (like those stock commercials where the people are dissing their high priced brokers) on "Ten Thousand Strong" so its not dead. Yet.

Understandable because their music is more in line with what came out in the 80s than with what would be typical of the 90s. Its not like a switch gets thrown at the end of a decade and the new standards of music commence.
If it makes you feel better it was most likely written in 1989 (or sooner) and may have even been recorded in '89.
Wish I could have caught some of it but college football and a fantasy draft took most of my time up.

This is about the time I stopped watching MTV because of the influx of their reality shows and many other things not related to music. The "M" in MTV used to stand for music but that became less and less. Most of these shows were showing stupid people doing stupid things and acting like a bunch of no-class morons. If I want to see a bunch of no-class morons I just have to drive the LA freeways and that is real!
Also, the videos during the 90's started to showcase more rap (to be more specific gangsta' rap) which glorified gangs and the gang lifestyle. It's no coincidence that the influx of gangs into the 'burbs happened at the same time as the gangsta' rap phenomenom. Life imitating art.
Many of the videos in the 80's may have been cheesy but most were not sleazy!

Funny you should mention A-Ha! I found out that the local video music station in my area at the time was the first to play that song. People were going into record stores requesting to buy the song even before it was in stores!

Yeah, it all seems to come in waves or eras as I call them. I believe that while Wilson Phillips was the exception, the 90's era really started around the end of 1988/early '89 instead.

Anyway the videos were often instrumental in how we bought music. One of my all time favourite albums is 10,000 Maniacs "In My Tribe" and I never would have bought it had I not seen the video to "Like the Weather". Twisted Sister we bought because of MTV, Huey Lewis' "Sports" was popular because of MTV and even if you were like me and couldn't stand him (before he became some kind of pseudo transexual pedo) you had to admit that the video for Thriller was just amazing.
