But 10 packages PER student! That 500 sheets per package! I mean I KNOW teachers go through lots of paper but jeepers! I guess my thinking is that they'd likely get MORE cooperation from parents if the lists were reasonable. Think about the parents that are trying to provide what their kids need for school but have multiple children. If it were me and just for my elementary aged kids I would have to supply 30 packages of copy paper! At $2.00 a package on sale that would still be $60 on copy paper alone! 12 packs of sharpies at at least $1.50 would be for me $54! 30 boxes of crayons even at 22 cents a package would still be $6.60! I'm sorry but I simply can't do that. I feel for parents in that district with several children in that school! Blessings, Garsy

Oh, I definitely agree. I was just trying to give some possible reasons- not that they were good ones. As a point of argument, (tongue firmly in cheek here) you can buy cases of paper at office supply stores- a box has I think 10 or 20 reams of paper. I think if I was a parent in that school I would be discussing the supply list with the teacher, and with the principal if necessary.

True - but they certainly are not priced very reasonably! I used to purchase office supplies for one of my hubby's old jobs and even back 4 years ago a box of 10 reams was around $9 or $10, I think. This is true. I think its still cheaper to buy a box than to buy individual reams- and they do occasionally go on sale at staples and other office stores. Anyways...I agree that that supply list was excessive, and that parents would be more inclined to try to accommodate lists that are more reasonable.

I'm not a parent, but I'm horrified at some of the things I'm reading here. I simply wouldn't buy the things on the list my kids wouldn't be using. I don't think it's unreasonable to bring in one box of tissue or one container of soap, but there is no way I would be buying 10 of anything or dry erase markers or copy paper. Nope, not happening.

Last year I had to send 12 kids off to school with no school supplies because we had only enough funds to cover a few clothes for certain ones. Money gets tight with that many kids. This year, I decided to buy a little here and there. If I don't buy what is on the list, they come home asking for it or bring notes home. Last year, some very kind people provided a few supplies to my kindergartner. The elementary kids got their stuff on payday, so all was well. The high school list is usually just whatever you need for the class you are taking. The list includes all supplies for all classes, so we filter out what we don't need. Just for fun, read my blog posts at Call Me Crazy... Back to school shopping Back to school shopping, take two Back to school shopping, take three enjoy!

Ah but the deal is is that the kids often DO use these things. many classrooms have the individual dry erase board markers and all the copies that get made I can assure you your kids would bring home at least a ream of paper a school year. The 4th grade and 5th grade teachers at the school my kids attend have the kids use the dry erase boards both big and individual all the time, especially for math and spelling. Yes things do get extreme some days, and I agree with limits, but not buying it without talking to the teachers about it first might be a major contributor to the extreme lists in the first place. Schools and teachers that don't get cooperation have to do something to make sure they get what they need. With costs going up, it's not only family budgets that take a hit. School budgets are getting hit hard too. Blessings, Garsy

Deb77! Girl! Remind me to never complain again about the supplies I have to buy! I only have 4 to buy for, so buying for 12 is something I just can't fathom! Glad you got help that year! Were your kid's teachers helpful and understanding? Blessings, Garsy

I personally went through a box of 12 whiteboard markers a month when I taught high school. I can imagine that if I had my students using their individual whiteboards a few times a week, we'd go through plenty of markers... especially when kids use them and don't always put the caps back on properly And a lot of subjects are not using textbooks as much or at all. I know that in my district, the foreign language and math departments do not have textbooks... all curriculum is on CD and we have to print out and copy individual lessons for the students. It takes a LOT of paper. quote:

We understand that back-to-school time is expensive, especially if you're buying for multiple children. Just let us know so we can plan accordingly. Complaining to your [non-teacher] friends or simply not sending supplies won't help anyone. My students sometimes feel sorry for me and buy things for the classroom. Last year I got a homework tray from one student because she said it was sad that I didn't have one. Another student bought me a ball when I lost the one we had been using in class
