Or at least when you are finished laughing, help me out here!

My soon-to-be 13 yo son has never found his heart music. He never sings where anyone can hear him, never requests any songs, and the only thing I have heard him listen to intentionally is Weird Al.

Well, I have the Mamma Mia! soundtrack and apparently ABBA was what was missing from his life. He even sings along.

So do you know of other artists he might like, that are either not objectionable, or are actually Christian musicians? Because at this point, his mama's heart (she's a musician, after all) is willing to do just about anything to expand his enjoyment of music!

(and no, my PC won't work with the pandora site anymore, so the music genome project is not helpful to me at the moment)

HAHAHAHA!!!!!

Oh! Sorry!!

Why not continue in the Disco-era vein? The Bee Gees. Kool and the Gang. Stuff like that.

He can only go up from there!

Get thee to a Jonas Brothers CD . . .

Scratch that.

I'm not sure you can find anything better than ABBA!

;-)

Is it the harmony he digs? The layered vocals that push to the fore? I'm guessing so, since he's singing along and not playing air guitar. If he likes harmony, you could always get him so Cathedrals . . .

(I'm stretching here . . . )

With music taste like that, he could get elected to the Senate from Arizona and then run for president a couple times!

As PHmosh said, you can try some disco stuff. The BeeGees and Donna Summer are both good. You might be able to move from there into some Stevie Wonder.

Or go the other way into Broadway.

Being that I was a Dr. Demento fan in junior high and high school I can't fault him for liking Weird Al. My 11 year old son has caused me to reappreciate that master of the parody!

You ever thought about taking him to a live musical. We've taken our boys aged 11 and 7 to some including "The King and I", "The Sound of Music" and "West Side Story" and they seem to enjoy them. They even know who Julie Andrews is and have been to one rock concert "Heart".

It seems he likes upbeat, uptempo, pop songs and that doesn't make him different from most of the population.

If it's the harmonies he likes, give him Avalon's first two cd's and some old Point of Grace. They both have a sound that's very similar to Abba, especially early Avalon. If it's the disco sound, get him into therapy asap, the boy needs professional help!

He might like Orleans, too. Their one hit "Dance with Me" even sounds like "Dancing Queen" in places.

And going along the more acoustic vein, he might like America.

I didn't appreciate Weird Al until I saw his A&E Biography episode; there's a video of him debuting "Another One Rides the Bus" on SNL that... WOW! More than anything, the delivery and presentation were what made it.

I must defy that, because I am a bassist and I love music. Been collecting it everysince I was 7.

back to the topic on hand, maybe it would be best to stick to disco music now with your son (I can't believe I actually typed that out) and see where it goes from there. Maybe throw in some New Wave bands to. I personally love New Wave and haven't found any other pop music out there that could beat it.

And tone deaf people think they can sing on key.

Sorry, I've just had bad experiences with bass guitarists that insist on setting the volume to max and, thus, making singing the bass voice line completely pointless. In those churches, we only had soprano, alto, tenor, and bass-guitarists.

Hi, I love CCM but I also have a thing for 70's music as well. I think it's important to keep a constant dialogue with your son about music, which I'm sure you are already doing. I 've known parents who have laid down rules about what their kids listen to but they really don't talk to their kids about music.

That is so true, my mom made me what I am today. She got me into Black Sabbath and Deep Purple. Then it just moved on from their.

Jimbo, I was mainly joking about that. But I do see your point. My problem is that no matter what volume I have my amps on, its always loud. But I usually use BC Riches and metal life distortion pedal with a fender amp. I had it all down to minimum volume and it stil drowned out the guitars.

If Christian musicians were water, I wouldn't know enough of them to fill a thimble.

HOWEVER, if your son is into Abba, might I suggest Journey, Hall & Oats, and The Moody Blues?

You guys are great. As for Broadway, you would THINK he'd love it simply because he grew up hearing it, but other than The Phantom of the Opera (the song, not the entire show), I don't think he does. I will try some others, though.

I DO remember him liking an old Point of Grace CD...I will see if I can't find him another.

And, I will check out the others mentioned. Thank you!

(btw, it isn't lack of exposure...I was headed to Broadway before I had kids, and so they have grown up with all sorts of music, and of course, me singing. When they were little, they thought I was a human jukebox, but he has SO outgrown Straighten Up and Fly Right, lol)

And, sorry, Bluestone, but not loving music isn't an option around here. I am convinced it's just that he hasn't found his niche yet.

For disco, how about KC and the Sunshine Band? They do have some harmonies while they're shakin' their booties!!!

I wish I could come up with a good recommendation. However I am only thinking of those 70's "forgotten artists" instead. I am trying to think Dancey and yet not disco. I really wouldn't say that the Bee Gees and Donna Summer would be good equivalents at all.

Somehow Afternoon Delight comes to mind, however you probably wouldn't want him to listen to that though.

First of all, congratulate him on his fine taste in popular music. Then see if you can find a copy of the first Zoegirl CD. I always thought that "I Believe" had a very definate ABBAesque vibe to it. Haven't heard much else by them, but that song's a corker.

I agree that song is reminiscent of ABBA. I don't happen to have that album, I will have to look it up.

No really Jimbo! You're making me mad!

Q: What do you call someone who hangs around with musicians?

A: A drummer or a bass guitarist.

--------
Q: Why do bands have bass guitarists?

A: To translate for the drummer.

-------
Did you hear about the bass player who locked his keys in the car?

He had to break a window to get the drummer out!

-------
Q: Why are most band intermissions limited to 20 minutes?

A: So they don't have to retrain the drummer and bass guitarist.
