I see.
Well, I was commenting on the actual coursework. There are many careers today that demand some computer knowledge. Almost all media and design careers would require it, as would anything which tracks inventories.
If the mom will not use a computer, it raises a serious complication in teaching the skills needed for that career choice.

I wouldn't fret. After reading several of the OP's posts, I am pretty sure this situation is imaginary. For instance, in this thread the kid is gay as can be and will never play football, but in the thread about Bluestone's brother's creditors, the OP's sister is forever giving the boy's coaches the OP's phone number and he has to deal with the cross-country calls (I guess all these coaches and teachers are too stupid to realize they are calling NYC from CA?). Unless these are fashion coaches, we have a discrepancy here. In addition, the OP claims to be a man, but can correctly name and spell ladies' fashion designers. Beyond that, this person's stories are outrageous enough to be unbelievable.

That is a possibility, Jenny-Fair.
I wanted to add something that no one seems to have piked up on...if the situation as relayed by the OP is accurate, this mom has not taken proper responsibility for her child, and has at times put son in harm's way for her own selfish reasons.
It's a very difficult thing for an extended family to deal with a family member being neglectful and endangering the child. if this is an ongoing pattern, there's a far worse issue than the loopy Vogue homeschooling program she's trying to develop. A pattern of ongoing neglect and child endangerment may necesitate other family members stepping in and attempting to get custody of the child. Often families in this situation are in denial about just how serious the problem actually is - witness the Casey/Callie Daniel situation.

Um, no, not imaginary. I'm not a unicorn or anything. And while my family life might seem strange to you, trust me, yours would probably seem unusual to me too, to say the least.
My nephew's sports are riding, shooting, and judo. And I did not say that he's gay, just that we joke that he will end up being gay (yes, I know, sort of poor taste to joke about with a little kid-it runs in the family). I think 9 is probably too young to actually BE gay. He does fit the stereotypes though!
As for commenting on my post on another thread, no, you cannot tell where all cell phones are by area code. In New York, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, California, and other places, cell phones can have a wide range of area codes, which may not be the same as those of local land lines.
As for neglect of my sister's kid, for a couple of years they've had a live-in housekeeper, and other help who come in daily, and they do most of the "parenting" (seeing he's clean, fed, clothed, etc.) Sis has problems taking care of herself and others. And she really will not use computers (or microwave ovens) because they "taint her aura."
And as for being able to spell the names of fashion designers, well, I do read Details, Esquire, and other men's fashion magazines. I can spell "Armani" because I actually WEAR Armani. What's the deal? I guess you'd call me (and most men I know) "metrosexuals." I get manicures, pedicures, and massages a couple of times a month. I get facials and spend a lot of money on my hair. I wear expensive clothes, go to the opera and ballet, and know about food and wine. Like most metrosexuals, I am also an avid gun-owner and shooter, work out a couple of hours a day, participate in contact sports, and have sex with women. And yes, I do all of this wearing Prada (well, not during hockey), and maybe a little lip gloss and concealer.
Anyway, thanks for the advice for me to give Sis. I'll let you know how her Vogue curriculum comes along!

Yeah, it was sort of an accident. He sees my nephew once in a while, like maybe a couple long weekends and then a week once or twice a year. They get along really well it seems like, and the kid makes jokes about it (my entire family has terrible taste in humor; it's one of our many failings).

most of the phone numbers here don't have this local area code either (of course that could be because it's a military community and everyone just keeps whatever cell numbers they had when they moved here).
questions....
is your sister opposed to the library? If not, that is a really great resource.
I know you said she was opposed to computers, does that translate over to her son too or is it just for her?
(as for the microwave, we didn't have one for many years...do now but it gets used by my hubby and kids mostly, not me...I am just not a microwave lover, I prefer to heat things in the oven. So I really don't find it that strange that she wouldn't use a microwave)

My sister won't go in a library because they won't let her smoke there. She won't go ANYWHERE she can't smoke or that doesn't at least have a smoking lounge. We were at a funeral last year and she lit up in a big church.
Sis is pretty weird about computers and microwaves. She doesn't think that there is anything wrong with them per se,, she just believes that she is this really evolved spiritual being, and computers and microwaves will throw her aura out of whack or something. There are actually three or four computers in her house, and her kid uses them all the time. She doesn't care as long as she doesn't have to touch it while it's on. The rest of us mortals are not nearly as advanced as she is, so I guess it's not a big deal if our auras get screwed up or not.

That's pretty funny...your sister doesn't want to be anywhere near a microwave, and thinks that both them and computers mess up her aura, but...she smokes? Has she ever considered what that might be doing to her "aura" and her health?

Yeah, the smokes are bad for her I'm sure, but not nearly as bad as the Bombay Sapphire. Sis can put away the gin! I shouldn't talk, I'm sure I drink way more than I should, but I don't start at breakfast.
Nobody can ever accuse my sister of boring consistency!

My ex-brother in law is gay. He was gay when he got married, and he's now in the process of a sex change. He wanted a child and didn't believe in having one any other way than being married, etc. So he got married and didn't tell sis he was gay...nor did his family tell anyone. He was also in a cult. Got married, stressed sis out while she was pregnant and already having a complicated pregnancy, had my nephew (and utterly confused him, tried to homeschool but was that in name only), and got divorced. But he married to have a child...had to use trickery and all sorts of things, but he did it.
About hiring people to come in and teach him, one of my biology professors used to go in and teach for a homeschooling family a few days a week. I think she was teaching because the parent(s) didn't understand something though (she deals with biochemistry, biology, chemistry), but she did it for free I believe. (I'm sure they would have paid her, but she probably was having fun.  )

My nephew's biodad is actually sort of a buddy of mine (we call him DB, for "Dancing Boy" because he loved the movie Billy Elliott). DB has always been pretty gay, never pretended to be otherwise. He and my sister got wasted at a party and had sex on a dare, and she came out preggers. He swears it's the only time in his life he slept with a woman, and knowing him, I believe it. Sis wanted to get married because, in my family, if you get married you have a huge fancy shindig with lots of presents (like a house and car) and an expensive gown and stuff. She even wore a tiara. I thought she looked like she was dressing up as Princess Di for Halloween. So mom and dad pay for the extravaganza and Sis and DB have the big blow-out, nice European honeymoon (during which they each went out clubbing in separate clubs!), and split as soon as the kid was born. I think they might even still be married; Sis is way too lazy to have done the paperwork herself. I should ask DB next time I see him! Anyway, the kid's dad is nice enough, and a smart guy, visits him some and takes him on vacation, stuff like that. More like an uncle than a dad. He pays for the kid to go to a Catholic school. The boy LOVES this school, because he's all into the Catholic ritual thing, and loves the uniforms and nuns' habits and stuff like that. Hiring a tutor while the kid is "home schooled" was my idea so he wouldn't fall behind.

That makes a lot of sense from the standpoint that for him, school is probably an island of stability.
Funny thing… part of the reason we chose to homeschool had to do with a desire to provide a stable (as in steady and secure, not as in horse barn for polo ponies) environment.

You're probably right about the stability thing! Although his home is pretty stable these days now that Sis doesn't drag him around with her any more when she goes out slumming.
