When the Bible talks about the "heart," it means the whole enchilada -- cognition, emotion, intent. All originally good, all tainted by the fall, all redeemable.
To say otherwise is to advocate schizophrenia. Which is, come to think of it, how most American Christians manage their lives in our generation -- compartmentalizing their inner lives, with one set of processes for the personal, non-rational, emotional, "religious" zone, and another set of parallel mental processes for the "real" world, the public sphere, where there is no god but Caesar.
Sigh.
Your posts make it clear that we, as a subculture, are a long ways away from God wants us to be, and have a ways to swim uphill. When 90% of us surrender unto Caesar that which is God's -- the minds of our children -- then Christianity begins looking like a species of infantile, irrational, self-deception.
But, see my tagline. Small seeds of obedience can grow into amazing oaks of righteousness. It's amazing how the task of raising children "in the nurture and admonition of the Lord" can contribute to one's own growth in grace.
