We have lost some big companies too. Levi's left last year. Little Tikes, MCI and several others that I cannot remember the names. SW Missouri has really taken a huge hit. One gentleman in his 50's broke my heart he worked for this packing company all his life. He was a supervisior there and made good money. Now all of the sudden they announce that they are going to china so those who are willing can stay on to help pack things up. He is now going to have to take a job that makes much less money and figure out how his family is going to survive on much less money. My church is full of stories like this.
Our church does have a food pantry and they have a cash fund for emergency assistance like if someone is homeless they will pay for a 2 week long motel stay. On top of what our local government program which our church works with they can help out a person in a dire situation for about 6 weeks. I was working a childrens program one day when a lady came in who was tired of her husband beating on her. She was hoping our church would just give her money but our pastor said they do not give out money. They will drive a person to Springfield and buy a bus ticket which I do believe they did. My husband is the guy that turns the water off and on in our town. We got a call to turn this families water back on. Mind you a person has to not pay anything 3 months in a row to get their water turned off. But anyways he shows up at the house and got the surpise that our pastor was there with the money to turn the water back on. I told my husband how the guy spends all his money on beer that is why he does not pay his water. DH then told me yeah but there are 2 children in the house so the church paid the water for them. So our church does do quite a bit but when I was talking about a small church struggling I was meaning the month to month groceries that are provided by WIC. A lot of moms in our church get that. I could see that becoming a huge drain on our church if every month we handed out hundreds of gallons of milk at 4 dollars a gallon.

This has been great feed... Unfortunately, in every program, there will always be people who "abuse" the system and make it look bad for everyone. There are truly people who need help in certain times.
When I left Hawaii after owning my own consulting company for 3 years, I came back to Illinois looking for a job. Because i left on my accord, I was not eligible for unemployment while looking for a new job. Strangely, my wife was (who worked with me), and it brought in some money for about 4 months.
Our family helped us out. My wife's aunt let us stay at their summer home for 2 months rent free, and her Dad gave us $1K to help us out.
We lived off our savings/credit cards for the rest until I got a job.
We also applied for WIC, which we were approved and used it for about 4 weeks. I have to admit, I felt guilty using it but my wife insisted saying that we had paid into it all these years, why not...When I got a job we returned the rest of the WIC coupons.
It's a good system for temporary help, but for the most part, there are too many people who abuse it.

Part of the issue is what "we" think is the right way to live. We each have our own house, have to owe on 2 cars (I did not say own), 4 TV's, cable, telephone, cell phones, etc.... When the church was established, families (3-4 generations) lived together. Sons would have helped their fathers or been trained in a skill and apprenticed out to another family.
They didn't have the WANTS we have. They had NEEDS, and when they had extra they trusted that by giving there was a blessing that would come. This is such a foreign concept to most US Christians today. There are many who just go buy whatever they want without ever asking the Lord if they should or should not. We have so totally compromised Biblical Christianity that first century saints would call us unbelievers.
So naturally we can not look to our “church” for help, because the church is a reflection of “us.” Yes, there are people that are living out their faith daily, they are very much the exception not the rule. Most of the people willing to live like that are actually barely tolerated within the bodies, they are considered kooks and radicals.
And as a full disclaimer, I count my self among those I am talking about. Not as one of the saints, but as one of the people living a shallow faith. I know that what I want to do, but I also know I am falling horribly short of what I feel I should be doing.

I guess they way I see it, we pay into it, it is our money, why shouldn't we use it when we need it?
For instance, my temp job is up in Oct, I will be on unemployment, and I will use it until I get a new job or temp job.
I also want to through out that there are people out there that cannot find jobs because of their background. I know someone that had a felony and no one would give her work because it was still on her record. No temp agency, nothing. Then it gets past the 7 year mark and then people as, have you ever, so she is still having a hard time finding work. Then she trys to get help to go to school so she could get some computer skills, and the State said she made too much the year before to qualify. Nevermind that she had no work for over 6 months at the time.
I think the system is broken. Why don't they do things to help people get skills. Why don't they help people help themselve. That is why the system is there. Not to be a crutch. People should not just keep being able to get more and more money because they have kids, and they make no attempt to work for themsleves.
I am more teaching them to fish, instead of just giving them fish.
