Just to see what this looks like, some captured words through this post...

what a church is... an assembly of believers building one another up... those who confess Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the Living God... spurring one another on to doing good deeds... welcoming sinners and skeptics... steadfast in fellowship, remembrance of Christ's suffering through communion, and also in prayer... visiting the orphans and widows... a place of love, instruction in God's Word, and where prayers for healing made known... not a building of assembly but an assembly of living stones of which Christ is the head and chief cornerstone.

What is a / are some neat way(s) to invite people to come with you to visit the organism? (I DO like that example. Don't misread this.) What can help make a group of people that appear to be running on emotion, talking about things unseen, closing their eyes and saying words to no one in the room- any thoughts on how you can make that real? Do you think it is real enough that your friend could go out in a week or two and invite another of their friends to check things out?

Thanks for the ongoing input, all.

As for the scripture quoted...

Jesus was talking to the disciples when He asked who they say that He is and Peter answered, "You are the Christ, the son of God". Jesus answered this with, "you are Peter and on this rock I will bulid My Church".

What Jesus was saying is that our knowing who He is, because the Father tells us, and His knowing us... is what the Church is built on. Our knowing Him and His knowing us. You do not want Him to tell you that He never knew you... in that case you were never part of His Church.

What is the Church is different...

Matthew 18:20 "...For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them.”

The organized Church is established in scripture with the offices and sacraments. In my humble opinion a Church meeting is a coming together of believers, to meet with and be ministered to by the Lord, through the preaching of the word and through His sacraments.. His table and baptism, both that of John and that of Christ, water and fire. Not a place where we come to serve, unless we are chosen by the Lord to fill the office of pastor, teacher, or to fill one of the other offices of the Church. Otherwise we come together as the Church to receive from the Lord.

I have noticed that the Gospel presentation of some believers is simply inviting people to Church. In the spirit of the Great Commission, the Church, the Body of Christ, is to go to the people. It is great to have unbelievers enter into a fellowship, but the true reason for fellowship is to equip believers for the work of ministry. In many ways, it is not for unbelievers. I, for one, don't want to hear a Gospel message every week. Nobody grows in that environment. If a believer meets a non-believer out in the world, and the opportunity should present itself, that is when you share the Gospel message with them. Personally, many fellowships have grown to enormous sizes in regards to numbers, but I question how many within those fellowships are growing in their maturity. Too many people become dependent on, and put their faith in, the organization rather than in Christ. That is not a recipe for healthy fellowship or evangelism.

Grace and Peace
