My husband (age 61) is in college for his teacher's certificate. His mentor, a woman who is older than he, has corrected him several times concerning the word 'ladies'. Yesterday she told him they would have to work on his interpersonal skills because the term 'lady' is not acceptable.

In talking to her in a chat type conversation about there only being 3 men in the school grades 4-8, he told her he said 'Good Morning Ladies' when he entered a teacher's lounge filled with women his age.

Is lady or ladies an acceptable term?

Being called a lady is just fine with me.

What does his mentor want him to say instead?

I was brought up using the term for a group of women. What's he supposed to say, "Hiya girls?" I even call my Sunday school girls "ladies" and they're only 7 or 8 years old.

I think "ladies" is just fine.
I'm not offended by it. I thought it was the female equivalent of "gentlemen."

It would seem strange to walk into a room and say, "Good morning Women."

In fact, I prefer being called a lady than woman. Woman feels too old. Lady feels younger and sophisticated and someone my age. I dunno.

I use lady when referring to female co-workers. "I work with a lady who....."

Lady, Im your knight in shining armor and I love you
You have made me what I am and I am yours
My love, theres so many ways I want to say I love you
Let me hold you in my arms forever more

Lyrics here...

So my answer is NO! It is what I call my wife and that is my song to her.

Ben, you're such a soft-centre!

Here, ladies can be used as a name for a female 'rest room/bathroom' which are terms rarely used.

But saying 'Good morning ladies' is not bad and I'd never have a problem with it. All depends on context I suppose.

I always thought of it as a term of respect, as well as meaning "lady-like" or sophisticated as stated before. I think what most women hate is being called "Ma'am." Saying, "Yes, ma'am" or "No, ma'am" seems polite to me, not the equivalent of calling somebody old.

I think saying "Good morning, ladies" shows respect. I was taught to behave like a lady and don't mind someone commenting that I am!

Ladies seems fine to me--I am not offended by the term. When I was young I did not like being addressed as Ma'am at all. But now I see it as a term of respect and kinda like it. I do think you have to be careful how you use it and when. Kids down here are all taught to say yes ma'am, no ma'am to any woman/lady older then them.

The only time I've objected to the use of the word "lady" was recently when a stranger addressed me on the Internet and said, "Okay, Lady..." and proceeded to try to sell me something. Other than that, I have no objection with the term. As someone said, it's a term of respect. So is ma'am, as someone pointed out, and since my hair is starting to turn grey, I wish the young store cashiers would stop calling me Miss and use Ma'am instead.

She wants him to say 'women'. She says 'ladies' is sexist!

If I stop by the older men's Sunday School class, I'll stick my head in and say 'Morning boys'. They love it!

I'm tired of all this political correctness!

sexist?????? Um .... a term used to differentiate the physical attributes of a gender is sexist???????

Like a said, a man walking into a room and saying "Good morning Women," would just be weird.

Now, I can see using woman if referring to a person. "I was talking to this woman the other day..."

I hate Political Correctness too. It's down-right stupid. You can't please everybody all of the time. Why are we so gung-ho on making sure that we don't offend people who may or may not be offended anyway?????

I have a Jamaican friend who will almost lynch someone for calling her African American. She is NOT African American. To assume that all people of dark skin are African American is almost more racist than calling them all black. That's right up there with assuming that all people of Hispanic descent are Mexican.

There's always Sinatra's favorite term, broads. I can see it in the bulletin, "Wednesday night's Broad's prayer will be in the sanctuary".

I prefer lady to woman when it's appropriate. To me, it speaks to character, and woman speaks more to only gender.

I don't think that it's a bad word, and I am a lady and proud of it.

Me three.

quote:

She wants him to say 'women'. She says 'ladies' is sexist!
Maybe someone should give her the definition of 'lady'.

quote:

1. A well-mannered and considerate woman with high standards of proper behavior.
2.
a. A woman regarded as proper and virtuous.
b. A well-behaved young girl.
3. A woman who is the head of a household.
4. A woman, especially when spoken of or to in a polite way.
5.
a. A woman to whom a man is romantically attached.
b. Informal A wife.
6. Lady Chiefly British A general feminine title of nobility and other rank, specifically:
a. Used as the title for the wife or widow of a knight or baronet.
b. Used as a form of address for a marchioness, countess, viscountess, baroness, or baronetess.
c. Used as a form of address for the wife or widow of a baron.
d. Used as a courtesy title for the daughter of a duke, a marquis, or an earl.
e. Used as a courtesy title for the wife of a younger son of a duke or marquis.
7. Lady The Virgin Mary. Usually used with Our.
8. Slang Cocaine.
From here.

It goes on to say
quote:

Usage Note: Lady is normally used as a parallel to gentleman to emphasize norms expected in polite society or in situations requiring courtesies: Ladies and gentlemen, your attention please. I believe the lady in front of the counter was here before me. The attributive use of lady, as in lady doctor, is widely regarded as condescending and inappropriate. When the sex of the person is relevant, the preferred term for this usage is woman. The adjectival form female is also acceptable; in fact, twice as many members of the Usage Panel prefer female and male to woman and man as modifiers in the sentence President Clinton interviewed both ______ and ______ candidates for the position of Attorney General.

When I was in the Navy and annoucements were made concerning spouses aboard, they always said, "Officers and their ladies, enlisted men and their wives..."

That kinda stung for us enlisted men.

Like Aga, I wanted to vote both "No", lady is not a bad word, and "I AM a lady and proud of it", but since you made it that we couldn't do both, I opted for the second.

I agree with Mike, All ladies are women, but not all women are ladies.

'Lady' is a polite name for any woman.

There's much worse today's culture has classified women (and men) as, 'lady' or 'gentleman' is a good step against that direction.
