Hurricane Ike.....
from the projected path right now, my mom (and friends cause I grew up there) are right in the path of getting the worst side of the storm dumping right on them. I haven't heard from my mom yet as to evacuating though...I am guessing it's the same as last week....if she does she will go to a friends house a few hours inland...and if it looks like she will be away for more then a few days she will head up here. Her cell phone doesn't have any minutes right now, so tomorrow I will call her at work and get the scoop. A lot of my friends facebooks already say they are leaving tomorrow or friday.

I'm praying for your family, Sarah. Crystal, how are you doing? I'm thinking of you guys.

NicCan, sweetie, that sounds soooooooooooooooo hard. I will be praying for you and Lorne - I hope you can find someone amazing who can mentor and counsel you guys at this difficult time.

How did the bloodwork go, Yo? I am so going to find that Idol clip on Youtube later so I know what you're talking about

Ruth, how's your hubby doing?

NicAus, still praying. How are things going for you guys?

Ladies, I am so tired. You know when you just have one of those weeks? I'm just holding out for Saturday lunchtime, when I can chill for a wee bit!

Claire, my husband is doing okay. They found blood in his urine, but nothing else wrong, except he needs to loose weight/get healthier. He has one more specialist to see today. I also have an ultrasound in the morning, and a dentist visit in the afternoon. Lots of doctors today, so thank the Lord my mom is here! Thanks for asking.

Prayers for Sarah and Crystal.

Stina, I see what you mean about the difference between health care and food stamps. I lean towards universal health care myself, if we could hopefully look at all the programs that have gone before us in different countries, to see what worked well and didn't work well. I hope you find the right job for you and your family.

Good Morning all.

OK I am so excited today. I get to have a play date that includes no kids.
The kids are staying home with dad today while I go out with a new friend for a couple of hours.

On the issue of someone suggesting that we should work instead of stay at home. Sorry forgot who asked.
You have to do what is right for your family. I know that the few times I have worked was some of the worst times in our marriage, it was terrible we fought constantly and I believe that at least for our family my hubby was feeling like he wasn't doing his job. He really believes in the mom stays home.
His happiness and getting to be the man (even tho he is even if I do work) is so much better for us then having all the latest things.

Ruth - Hope things settle down for you guys soon. Oh yeah, are you finding out the gender of the baby? I was not sure I will feel like a goober if you already have said what the gender is.

Crystal - Stay safe!

Sarah - Praying for your family!

So, a few of us from church have decided to train for a 5K in January. They all ran it last January, but we were out of town so I did not get too...well I didn't even train because I already knew I wouldn't be able too. My goal is to get up in the mornings around 6:45 and run before hubby leaves for work. Since I am not use to running right now I am going to run 1 minute, walk 2 and then slowly increase my running time and decrease my walking time. I really want to get in shape and loose some weight too, so this is just incentive. I would feel so accomplished if I ran a 5K, the whole thing. So, I think I am going to start tomorrow...let you know how I do afterward.

Today we are probably going to hang out around the house, play outside, and clean. We also have to meet hubby for lunch and then come home for naptime! Other than that not much going on...

I had something really nasty about the parenting folder here...but deleted it. I'm going to stay out of there for awhile.

Anyhoo. I'm going to Big Lot's today to get some canning supplies! My friend has graciously offered to teach me to can next week. I'm getting a bucket 'o tomatoes at the market tomorrow. The Amish guy sells them in a 5 gal bucket for a few dollars...WOOT!
I'm also going apple picking in a few weeks, going to put up a buncha those..and try my hand at apple butter.
Does anyone have a good apple butter recipie?
Sandy

Today has turned into errand day- we have to hit Sam's, Joanne's, the teacher store for a new fat pencil, and the grocery store that has our yogurt on sale for .35- gotta stock up!

Hugs to all today- it just doesn't matter who you are it kind of feels like the world should just stop for the day...

Crystal- you'll be heading south I guess?

Sarah- are you in a flood proned area? Looks like you'll be getting dumped on pretty good too, just without the winds as bad...

Chelle, do you have a training plan already? The Couch 2 5K program is excellent, I've done it from start to finish before.

Today is mine and hubby's 9th anniversary.

Chelle, that's awesome! My mom is training for a 5K, too, and she's never run in her life. I'm excited for her, and I'll be cheering you on, too!

Today I'm doing laundry all day, and sewing a blanket for my best friend's 2 yr. old daughter. My best friend is expecting a baby, so I made her a blanket and matching burp cloths, and I got her 2 yr. old a baby doll and I'm making her a blanket for the doll to match the one I'm giving her baby sister.

I can't wait until tomorrow! We're headed to Tulsa so my parents can watch the kiddos while hubby and I go out, then Saturday-Sunday-Monday we'll be in OKC with our best friends. We haven't seen them since New Years. Monday we're going to the State Fair, which is one of our all-time favorite annual traditions! But we'll be getting the remnants of the hurricane all weekend, lots of rain and wind.

I've never had anyone hint that I should be working to support the family, but I definitely get asked in round about ways how we get by on one income. Especially with Dh supply teaching and not being guaranteed work every day. I'm always asked when I am going back to work, I just laugh and say "oh I don't work" and leave it at that.

Ryanne - we had to leave our computer because we bought the floor model. They have to restore it to factory settings, plus we got some programs that they are going to load on for us. We probably could have had it done yesterday, but it was a half hour before closing so they asked us to come back. The wait is so hard though, I have never been so excited about a computer before!

Happy Anniversary Rachel!!!

someone just last week put a crock pot recipe for that in the baby chat thread...if you want to use the crock pot to cook it in.

yes very much so. The highest above sea level anywhere near where my mom lives is only 11 feet...and that isn't in her town, it's in the bigger town she works in about 30 minutes away (more inland) from her town. TX/LA are divided by a river that runs all the way down to the Gulf...my moms town is right off of that river and not too far in from the Gulf, so they are probably looking at a pretty bad storm surge at this point...depending on where this thing hits. If it hits more south then they may just get a little flooding that they are used to dealing with every year (it rains there a TON...cause it's the swamps)....if however the storm turns a bit more north then they could get the worst of the storm surge. Who knows what this thing will decide to do...it's path is so unpredictable right now. They got the mandatory evacuation call this morning, so she and a friend are headed north to somewhere in LA where they were able to get a hotel room booked...and they will all come here if it looks like they will be more then a day or two. My older brother is headed to my younger brother's house in Austin.

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY RACHEL!!!!!!!

NicoleCAN, hopefully you will find a good counselor. We have been seeing one of the pastors from church about various issues(nothing earth shattering) and he has been more then helpful. If it's a large church then they probably even have a "real" counselor on staff. I know our church has a family psychologist and a child psychologist in addition to the pastoral staff.

Supposedly this church has counsellors for everything thing from marital problems, abuse problems, family issues and whatnot. I know that they have real counsellors on staff and they have like a million different pastors so I'm pretty hopeful we will find someone or at least have them reccommend someone to us.

Lexie, I don't know what the price of gas is right now. It's been changing and when I go out I haven't looked.

Sarah, I hope your mom finds a safe place to stay and that her home is fine when she does leave it. Same goes for you Crystal. I am also hoping my BIL and his gf leave...

Thanks Claire. I hope so too. Lorne just wants today to be over with and we hope the bad news goes away today or else things may not be fun for everyone at his work...

Happy Anniversary Rachel!!!

I've had people tell me I should work. Lorne has had rude people tell him to get his wife to work. We both tell people the same thing. Lorne works. I stay at home. And we like it that way. He is better at being a financial provider and I am better at taking care of everything at home including my husband.

I really need to track that down.

Happy Anniversary, Rachael!

And.... I'm having a girl. To be honest, I feel some mixed feelings. I thought a little brother for Nathan would be great. We have all girl cousins, mostly girl playmates (at the moment); I thought another boy would be nice. And I've had it in my head for the longest time that this baby was a boy, too. I think I just need a bit of time to readjust my thinking. From empirical evidence, I know more high needs girls then boys (except in cases where the boys where special needs), so I guess I was feeling trepidation at the thought of a girl.

I hope all of this doesn't sound to awful. It's just that I love my little boy so much; I'm a bit of a tomboy, and I know boy stuff, boy things.

But girls can be special, too. It just ... feels weird somehow. Everyone expected me to be ecstatic at a girl, because my first was a boy (so, I couldn't possibly want a second boy, right ), but I just don't know what to feel honestly.

I know I'll love my children, no matter what. It's just odd to hear the words "she" and "daughter".

It's ok Ruth, I felt rather disappointed when Gabby wasn't a boy. Give yourself a couple days, then you can be excited! Maybe buying some cute girl things would help?

Heee. Shopping is the answer. My mom was already at Target with Nathan by the time I got home. I'm not a pink and ruffles kind of girl, but I do like purple.

Believe me when I say that was me. My parents had two girls, and I know my dad wanted a boy because he tried to turn me into one. He had me playing all the sports, watching sports, going to sports. He taught me to fight, all that stuff. It was a struggle because my mom loved having a girl and tried to do all the girly stuff for me. I say "I was always out playing baseball with the boys, running the bases in a frilly pink dress."

I wasn't sure when we found out we were having a girl if I would know how to raise a girl, because of the reasons you said above. But once you have that little girl in your arms you know what to do. I thought I'd be raising Akeelah to be a tomboy and now I'm doing the complete opposite and loving it!

Carter's stuff is good for girly clothes in colors other then pink. I like pink, but seeing it day after day can get old. So we do a lot of red and blue, both of which can be girly.

Thanks, ladies!

And Happy Birthday, Ryanne!

Ruth, I know I would've been disappointed had I found out Isaac was a girl. I remember that distinctly. Then my second was a girl, but I kind of felt like she was a girl before my u/s. She is truly an incredible little person. She is all girl (loves dresses and baby dolls) BUT she also can hold her own own against her brother and all the other little boys she plays with (we have no little girls at church or no girl cousins!). There's nothing dainty about her, even when she's in a dress. It's hilarious watching her take the boys down and run with them. She loves digging for worms and catching minnows. She plays in the dirt. She loves her knee-high, black rubber farm boots. She wears them with her ballerina tutu while chasing goats. She's totally the best of both worlds (girly and tomboy).

Oh, and I was set on buying purple, too instead of pink. Isabel has a good mix of everything. Pink, purple, green, blue and red. She looks cute any way we dress her!

And she is totally laid back, not high maintenance at all, for a girl, lol. But I'm not, either, so I guess that's why. Your little girl will probably take after you, and be a very well-rounded young lady!

eta: LOL, as we speak, Isabel is outside playing tractors with her brother in her pink shorts and knee-high rubber boots, with her hair standing in every direction.

You'll soon fall in love with your little girl, Ruth! I can definitely see where you are coming from though!

Here is the recipe for apple butter! LINK
It's funny because just a couple days ago my husband was talking about how much he loved apple butter and I said I'd try to find a good recipe. So I'm going to try it out!

Happy Anniversary Rachel and Mike!!

Nicole, I'm glad to hear you 2 are getting help. I hope it does indeed help!

Did anyone on CW lose someone on 9/11?

I understand.....thats ok, your feeling are valid and will work their way out. HUGS (and I don't give out hugs very often...I am not a huggy person...lol). I felt the same way when I found out our second would be a girl.....and I too am not a girly person (in fact my least favorite color of all is pink). I had the most girly girl ever...you could dress her in boys clothes and she still looked like a girl. She has always loved pink and frills and girly stuff....totally opposite of me...lol. She finally stopped this last year, but ever since she was old enough to get her own clothes she insisted that there be pink somewhere on everything she wore. God sure has a sense of humor.
