I'm surprised to hear your dislike for barbie dolls. Why is that? It's just something I decided long ago that I didn't want my kids playing with. There are several reasons...they dress like tramps, every house I've ever seen them in they lie around naked and I don't want that around my boys, and I just don't like the body image they portray. There are much more realistically shaped, better clothed dolls, and some even have "permanent undies" molded into their plastic. Great find, Chelle! I took my Bible and Bible study book upstairs with me when I put the kids down for naps, took a nap myself, and then did the first day of this week's study. God knows just what we need to see about Him, and exactly when we need to see it. I love those moments! I've not been liking this study too much, but today, it clicked.

We're having all the teens over tonight for a bonfire. Should be fun!! It's a gorgeous day out and it'll be chilly when the sun goes down. We might try to project a movie onto the side of the house, or play kick-the-can after dark. We'll roast hot dogs and marshmallows and have hot chocolate. I love this time of year!

That sounds like loads of fun, Rach. I'll bet those kids just love you and dh for taking time to disciple them.

There is actually a game called kick the can? How do you play it? I thought you just kicked the can...didn't know you could turn it into a big thing! Rachel - that sounds like so much fun! Donna - that is wonderful to hear about your brother. I pray my BIL will make a change like that one day.

Neither my in-laws or my parents ever took either of my children out anywhere. My late MIL was controlling, manipulative and could be downright nasty (and would have favoured my dd over my ds), as well as indulging in make-believe that we would regard as untruthful, and my FIL is one of those men who think that it's fine (and funny) to tease children, even very small ones. With my parents, I could not have trusted them not to spank my children; my mother especially was also very likely to make them feel weird/strange/wrong for not liking something or other. How did you deal with the isolation of that situation? We have a similar situation in that even if we did live close we'd not let my parents ever take our children out for the day or over night, ever. My mother is abusive and manipulative and I could not trust her to be kind and loving to my Hannah especially. *Sigh* We would let Hannah spend a few hours with my MIL if she lived close. But she's got health issues and is over 70 so it would be a burden for her to ever take our children over night. The one person we have here to watch our sweet ones when we want to go out for a few hours is my sister. Though I would feel uncomfortable letting her take our kids 'out' somewhere just because she doesn't have kids of her own, and though she loves our girls tremendously, she's not as careful about their saftey as we are.

Interestingly enough, my mom is more careful with Nathan then I am. I'm willing to stand back and let him try something, with the risk that he might fall. He's never taken a serious fall, never had anything more then a scraped up knee or a bump on the head, but my mom is super, super careful. She even forgot herself once and got in between me and Nathan because she didn't feel I was watching him closely enough. I let her know never to do that again. I'm well aware of my son's abilities, and I'm able to keep him safe. Donna, that's great news about your brother. Chelle, I hope the time passes quickly by for you.

Nathan visited the zoo today for the first time. Daddy backpacked him for some of it, other times he walked or was hand carried. He's capable of walking long distance, but he often doesn't like to. He enjoyed the animals, especially the tigers and the flamingos (of all things). The zoo closed early to prepare for Boo Zoo (Halloween celebrations), but with my pregnancy and Nathan's age, we weren't going to stay there long, anyways. He is talking more and more, even if he's hard to understand sometimes. At one point he tried to say "No more animals" when daddy told him it was time to leave the petting zoo. He did well at the petting zoo actually, even though the goats were substantially larger then himself. Nathan even enjoyed brushing the goats and was very gentle, never even tried to tug on a tail or ear.

ORIGINAL: clag4christ I was thinking of two particular instances where I was there with my sister and my children got pretty hurt (Hannah busted her lip badly and then Jael fell down on concrete and smacked the back of her head badly). This is a totally different scenario, but my niece was giving Nathan a hug and started walking forward while hugging him. She pushed him backward onto concrete. Greg and I were nearby but not close enough. I don't think she had malicious intent, but even though they weigh the same (she's 3.5 years), she has more height and better physical skills then Nathan, and we do need to watch her a lot more carefully around Nathan. I felt terrible that I let her hurt my boy (not mad at her, mad at myself).

She didn't allow my children to get hurt on purpose and there was no malicious intent on her part. She felt horribly and was very worried for them after the fact. But still...it was horrible both times to see my children bleeding, Hannah from the mouth, and Jael from a goose egg on the back of her head.

Donna, I have never taken your Hannah out for a library card, pierced ears OR a tattoo -- you still like me, right? (Please say yes.) Happy Birthday, Justin!!! Sandy, do you still need chocolate? I hope you get some chocolate in your house SOON. There's just something about chocolate. Chelle, I am glad your husband will be home soon, and I am sure you both missed him and that he missed you. My husband is never gone for weeks and months at a time either but I still miss him when he has to be gone for a whole week on business, even if it is just 5 nights. I just miss him. Cute avatar photo of Hunter and (you?)...he is such a "big" boy, huh? I forgot what else I was going to say. I have a headache, that's my excuse. Sandy, do you have chocolate yet? (I'm craving it now so thus it's on my mind.) Hey, how did your apple crisp turn out the other day? Jeanie

ORIGINAL: PrincessDonna Hannah could have taken books out on the family member's card This is what I would have done if taking someone's child to the library. Even if I didn't know the parents' thoughts on getting a library card, I would have checked books out for Hannah on, say, Noah's card. Then when I took the kids back home I would've mentioned to Donna and Brian "We checked out Hannah's books on Noah's card," so the parents would know that about Noah's card, and that would probably trigger Donna and Brian to say "Oh, that's good. We make a small event of it when each child gets their own library card and Hannah's not quite ready yet." But I am pretty careful about other people's kids because I don't like to give other children food or promise things unless I *know* the parents would be okay with it. The exception to that is my nephews and nieces. They are like "the family's kids" and honestly, we all kind of parent those kids when we're with them and my brother and SIL are totally okay with it. I do know that my mom has taken my nephews/nieces from that family to get their own library card in her town (my mom and the kids live in different towns) and my mom keeps the library cards at her house. This is because my brother's kids usually stay with my parents for about a month every summer so it's a big part of what they do. My brother and SIL have no problem with them having library cards but my SIL is not one who would take them to get their own nor would she or my brother make a special event of it (so it really is not a problem for them). People should be checking with you on everything, basically, Donna, since your family has been through so much lately. I just think like Ruth (?) said, it's just one phone call and you have your answer...

I suppose Greg is feeling better about life. He says he probably won't retire early because of the beating our stocks are taking, but that's okay. He said if he did retire, he'd probably just do for a hobby what he's already getting paid now to do. I was glad to hear that he feels so good about his work. He also said he felt a burden to give an extra donation above and beyond our church check. Specifically he wants to donate to a food bank type service. People are struggling these days, and he wants to help out with putting food on the table. I'm so glad to hear him talk this way. The Atlanta Food Bank is the big boss for food assistance around here, but there are lots of smaller church food banks, too. I am sitting on my behind, though. My left side really, really hurts, and Greg told me to rest while he and Nathan play.

ORIGINAL: isaacsmom Kick the can -- it was one of hubby's favorite games growing up. I've never played. It has to be played after dark. There is a person who is "it", who stands in the middle of a field or area and waits for everyone to hide. Nearby, there is a square marked off for a "jail" and a can. Everyone hides, "It" finds/tags people and puts them in jail. Other players have to try and kick the can before "It" can tag them, which lets everyone out of jail. I *think* if "It" tags you before you can kick the can, you become "it", or something like that. Rachel -- kick the can is SO MUCH FUN!!!! I haven't played it in a few years but am writing it down for our family reunion next year -- my nephews will LOVE IT! I bet you're away from the computer and getting ready for your youth group but I hope tonight is fun and great fellowship for all of you! Jeanie
