Our older boys were never in nursery and our third boy only used nursery once in a while when he was almost 2. Before then they sat quietly with us in church. We never brought books, crayons, or other stuff because it was more of a distraction than a help. We simply snuggled them on our laps, showed them where in the Bible things were written, let them ask questions (having to do with a sermon) in a whisper, and explain stuff to them in a whisper. It was never a big deal, and they enjoyed and looked forward to church.

The church we're in now is even more child-friendly. There's two big mats up at the front where the children can all sit (parents sit with them on the floor or on the chairs behind). There's shakers and flags if the children want to use them in the worship, they're encouraged to dance if they want to, and sometimes one or two of them will be invited up to the microphone to pray. If the children want to toddle/walk round the church, no-one minds. We've found that because the children are allowed to move, they don't actually move much, and they're never disruptive.

This is what we do at our church plant.

We found that once a child starts asking the "why" questions, they are ready to put away the toys and sit and pay attention along with everyone else.

Until then, we have "bible" pictures, etc. that can be colored on, fabric blocks, books, etc. to play with - bags of cheerios and sippy cups of juicy juice. We do encourage the kids to be a little quieter than normal (since we are in our home right now) just to keep the noise level low for everyone, but it has worked well thus far.

I have a friend that I am pretty close to . . . She has a grown daughter who is in such bad shape. . . She thinks if she had been heavy on the discipline her daughter would not have turned out like she did. So the advice I got from her a few months back was to spank when my child does not listen especially at church. . . .

Well, I only had two children, but I reared them without spanking, and both are adults with spouses and families, all loving and serving the L-rd and rearing their children to do the same. Families have their own needs and ideas, and individuals have theirs. What works for one doesn't always work for the other.

I only ever spank my kids at church for things they'd get spanked for at home....and that don't usually do those things at church.

I WILL take them out and explain that what they may be doing is wrong and why.....
