I was reading another thread (i believe it was one of the holiday ones), and i found the exchange interesting between several people discussing what kind of bible they use. So now i am curious.... What kind of bible do you use?? I'm hoping not to have a debate regarding versions because i do believe i ran across a KJV version thread somewhere... But more of sharing, perhaps even light hearted (ooooo... i almost wrote heated) one.

My first bible was one i was given as a young adult - you might have seen them -- little green new testament book with psalms and proverbs in it. The next was a HUGE KJV bible we bought when we were first married. To me, at the time, it was quite intimidating all the thee's and thou's and so on. Unfortunately, i just used that one to open to a random page and let my finger drop randomly on a verse. A few years later, my husband (who never reads the bible ) brought me home a NLT life application bible. He told me he had heard that whenever a person reads the bible they should pray before and ask for understanding. Well, that bible i gobbled up because it was more understandable to me.

About 1 1/2 years ago i finally bought myself my own bible. I bought a "backpack" size-ish one with an imitation leather cover for $4.98 from one of those "real cheap mega stores". This is a NKJV. I really enjoy reading from this bible. If i ever get another one, though, i would like it to have room for notes and the pages to be sturdy enough for highlighting.

I also think it would be cool to have a whole car trunk full of bibles all sizes, colors, materials. That way whenever i saw someone who i could give it to, I'd say hey pick one of these out for yourself. Glory to GOD!

I use the NIV (New International Version) now. When I was little all we had in the house was the NKJV or maybe it was KJV... at any rate I didn't even know that other translations were widely used (and accepted) until I was in my mid-20s.

I like to compare the various versions but my favourite version is the NKJV.

NKJV is my main, but I do refer to other bibles on occasions; Holman, KJV, NASB etc

My study/memorization version Bible is NASB, it retains many of the KJV wordings and flavor. I was weaned on KJV and have a great regard for it and frequently refer to it. Nazarene church claims(I attend a Nazarene assembly)the NIV as it's own but I'm skeptical<grin>. In any translation(or paraphrase)one has to come excepting God's word(s) will change us rather then trying to bolster a preconceived notion.

While I'm tempted to use one that comes with an eraser to get rid of all those pesky issues that I don't like....I use the ESV and NASB.

A NKJV Study Bible - my husband asked one day how many Bibles I have - when I counted it was over 20 and there are probably a few I missed. Some of them are very old Bibles that belonged to various Grandparents, a prayer book and Bible that belonged to my Mother. I like to compare versions for Bible study and sermon prep.

This was so precious I had to quote it!

The first time I gave one of my beloved Bibles away to someone was so exciting! We were talking about God, and she told me she didn't read the Bible because it was too confusing. So I gave her my favorite easy-to-read Bible. I don't even remember which version it was now. But it doesn't matter, I was just so thrilled that I could share God's word with her in a format that was so easy to read and understand. If I remember correctly, it also had commentaries on the page to help even further.

I have a number of Bibles at home. I also use e-Sword, which has several translations and several different commentaries. And I have a couple other online Bible sites I tend to frequent. I really like the versatility of looking up verses in different translations when I'm doing an indepth study so that I can gain a broader understanding. I use the NASB more than any other, but there are just some verses I much prefer in the good ole King James.

NIV Study Bible although every once in a while I enjoy Standard English Translation.

I do not know why.

Not trying to start a debate here, but I think the NIV users should look up information on that version of the Bible. Just friendly advice.

I understand the difference in the flesh and sinful nature translation along with the mix of idea for idea and word for word.

It's been used to give me spiritual guidance on issues and I trust it still.

It matters little which version you use, what matters is that you use it. God is not limited by translations.

Peace

I have KJV, NKJV, a comparative Study Bible that has KJV, NIV, Amplified, and I think American Standard Version all together, a Complete Jewish Bible, a couple of different children's Bible's, and a couple of cheapy paperbacks that are some super-easy-read English version that I can't remember right off hand. I also use the Bible Study Tools at Crosswalk to look at other versions from time to time. I have access to a Tanakh & a Torah, but they aren't mine personally.

I read The Message, Amplified, & NIV at the same time.
But it's been more of The Message & NIV.

I do this because The Message can sound very differently than a lot of Bibles--so I read The Message and the NIV hahah. If that even made sense.

And if I want to add another version, I go to biblegateway. (:

Didn't you just say that you use the NIV Study bible?

I like the New King James best. NASB is my second favorite.

Amen. God's word is not void. We are so earthbound in our thinking at times and this is surely one of those times. God is speaking. The question is are we listening???

I received a Revised Standard Version Bible for Christmas when I was 5 years old. I went through confirmation with that Bible and God used that Bible to draw me to Himself.

When I began participating in Bible studies, I began to hear some 'differences' and decided to try out the NIV Bible. But once again, some of these 'differences' prompted me to investigate other translations.

I ended up buying an NASB. This was THE Bible for me. I can still remember the first few times using it. It was as if God was using a loud speaker. I could hear Him so clearly and understand in ways that I never had before. Why??? I don't know. But I credit God and He knows what I need. It is the translation that speaks to me and communicates His truth to me in ways the others didn't/don't.

So that is my primary Bible now. In fact I recently wanted a second copy because mine needs to be rebound and the thought of being without 'my' Bible was rather unsettling. I know this Bible. I don't need a concordance when this Bible is in my hands. So I wanted a second copy and found one in a book store in London! (I live in the US but this is one of the wonders of the computer age.) So now I have two copies of the same edition of the NASB Bible. God has been so good to me.

I agree that the Holy Spirit is with us to guide no matter what version we use. I just see some major problems with the NIV.

And as far as the Message is concerned. I read that version for a good time, not to study. Isaiah 55 has cotton candy in it. And other parts of it seem like mockery to me...

Too each his or her own. Just thought some might care. I had purchased an NIV before I looked up the information and realized that several verses were missing and there were lots of mistranslations. And I no longer use it...
