I have a parallel Bible I like very much. It contains the NIV and Message versions.

I prefer the Message right now. The so-called "paraphrasing" I've heard often describe it doesn't bother me, because the gist of the passages are the same when compared to the others. I find myself reading more of it at one sitting, because it puts the verses in easily understandable language.

However, sometimes I will go over to the NIV because I remember a certain verse stated with different words that seemed to make more sense to me.

I am an intuitive person, and memorizing verses is very difficult for me to retain in my little head. So I really enjoy skipping from version to version, because I believe most of the versions mentioned in the previous posts have something a little different to offer in understanding for the reader.

Is anyone reading here old enough to remember the Readers Digest Condensed Bible? Remember all the stink about it? I have never read it. Has anyone here read it? Did it truly merit the criticism it got?

Old enough, i just don't remember it... i googled it and appears to still be for sale online and is still receiving stink. Wikipedia wrote about it:
quote:

In 1982, Reader's Digest published a special edition of the RSV that was billed as a condensed edition of the text. The Reader's Digest edition of the RSV was intended for those who did not read the Bible or who read it infrequently. It was not intended as a replacement of the full RSV text. In this version, 55% of the Old Testament and 25% of the New Testament were cut. Familiar passages such as the Lord's Prayer, Psalm 23 and the Ten Commandments were retained.

I have a couple of them that I use. In general, I am a believer that is firmly entrenched in the idea that character matters and my character needs a lot of help. So I read bibles that focus on and help me to that end. So, I use the NLT Life Application Bible. Often when I am in serious study, I augment my bible reading and use Barclay's which helps immensely. I am also a believer who struggles with character issues like codependency and other recovery issues... so I also use a Celebrate Recovery(NIV) and Life Recovery Bible(NLT).

Stay in the Word, it's the only written source of truth in the entire reality we live in.... In Christ alone who loved me and gave Himself for me.

NIV. I would like to purchase the Amplified and the Message. I really find them very comprehensive and explain things further.

My main bible is the NLT life application bible. It is easy to understand, and the application notes help someone new to the word, like me .

I did start with an NIV, and also have a NCT Max Lucado bible. I like his writing but not that bible version.

Of course at times if I am online I will use the NKJV in some of my posts. Depending on the verse, the meaning stays the same, but the power behind the words change, if anyone knows what I mean.

Take this verse for instance(my signature) Isaiah 41:10

from the NKJV

10 Fear not, for I am with you;
Be not dismayed, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you,
Yes, I will help you,
I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.’

from the NLT

10 Don’t be afraid, for I am with you.
Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you and help you.
I will hold you up with my victorious right hand.

the NIV

10 So do not fear, for I am with you;
do not be dismayed, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you and help you;
I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

and the NCT

10 So don't worry, because I am with you.
Don't be afraid, because I am your God.
I will make you strong and will help you;
I will support you with my right hand that saves you.

To me that first from the NKJV just seems so much more powerful...."Fear Not....Be not dismayed..."

compared to the rest, the worst of which is the NCT, ..."So don't worry..."

I think as long as the meaning in the verse is not changed, I guess it depends on the persons preference. I could never read the KJV, to many thou's and yea's for me.

I use several for comparison and clarity. I use KJ Schoefield, NIV, Living Bible, Archeological NIV and several others. I find it very helpful for me.

I typically use a Ryrie NKJ bible. I like the brief notes for quick clarification, although I sometimes strongly disagree with Mr. Ryrie. I also read the NASB and its Spanish counterpart--Biblia de las americas. But I would have to say that the version I currently read the most is the International Standard Version. It's a new translation that is not yet completed. It's a really good translation. http://isv.org/index.htm

When out and about, I use my Palm Treo and log on to Biblegateway.com or biblos.com and have quick and lightweight access to tons of translations. I also have Olive Tree Bible Reader and My Bible installed but tend to use the online bibles.

I find myself reading much more of the bible on computers than books. I especially like the ability to quickly get information on a place, person, or verse, using google or even wikipedia. I have a version of QuickVerse that came with everything but the kitchen sink but haven't reinstalled it since my old computer crashed 2 years ago. I can get most of the information in QuickVerse online.

My old Bible which is worn and full of notes and colors of various highlighters through the years is a NIV. I use it from time to time when I need to find something familiar but I use my NASB for the most part now. I've basically started over and "re-learning" , creating new notes and emphasis. I'll find things that have been forgotten and get to highlight and make notes all over again.

A bit off topic and I don't want to get into the dogma's of what bible translation anyone might read but, I was reading that there are problems with the NIV due to it's derivation from a translation done in AD 200(on or about) that had Gnostic origins in Alexandria, Egypt. A Christian philosopher, if there is such a thing, named Origen was involved.... apparently in that translation much of the original scriptures and some phrasing was removed. Anyone know anything about this ?

I had read and heard about this and have been kind of discounting it away, but, I ran into this issue in Matthew 6 while hosting a Bible Study when comparing the KJV/NKJV/NLT with the NIV... Problem being of course, some who attend use NLT, or NKJV or NIV.....see below;

NKJV: Matthew 6: 9-13

In this manner, therefore, pray: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. 10 Your kingdom come. Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven. 11 Give us this day our daily bread. 12 And forgive us our debts, As we forgive our debtors. 13 And do not lead us into temptation, But deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

NIV: Matthew 6: 9-13

"This, then, is how you should pray: "'Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, 10 your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. 11 Give us today our daily bread. 12 Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. 13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.'

So, note how the the last half of V13 has been removed from the text. I learned the Lord's Prayer growing up from it's KJV derivation... I was surprised to see the phrasing around God's Kingdom and Glory entirely deleted from the text. It seems to be a vastly important idea to leave out of the original writing of Matthew, an Apostle of the Lord. It kind of made me upset and right now, I barely read my NIV because of it....

I would appreciate any guidance regarding this....thanks in advance...

You can't believe everything you read. Some sources either have an agenda or they simply don't know the whole story, just a part of it. Read more sources. Find out why those parts were left out.
