I have never gotten around to trying chutney. This year my big experiment was Corn Relish. YUM! Someday I'll work into chutney. Do you use lots of it?
Ummm... not a lot, but I suddenly have gotten the urge to make preserves at the moment! My neighbour lost some tomatoes when they were still green, so I grabbed them, together with some of mine and made a piccalilli. I suspect that I'll be doing something with all the green tomatoes we have too (she said I could have them when she felt defeated by the weather!).

I think that one of my favourite chutney's is gonna be pineapple and chilli ~ when I had finished put it in jars, I tried some and it was pretty good. I've got to wait another 6 weeks or so before I eat it though!

I'm really impressed by your diligent care for the critters of this world by feeding them such tasty and nutritious bean plants.

I don't know about anyone else, but my mom always told me I had to share.

Piccalilli - that's what I need to call what I make from my mil's recipe. They always called it "hot sauce" but it's not really that hot. Piccalilli suits it much better.

Hmmm, maybe that's why I haven't tried chutney. The pineaple sounds great but the chili...... Too bad you're not close and would give me a taste... in six weeks.

Piccalilli isn't a sauce ~ it's mostly vegetables ~ there is a sauce, but it simply coats the veggies. And that's got some heat too, because I threw a couple of chillies in it!

So, come visit!

I'm getting a great collections of jams, marmalades, butters and chutney! Bound to be something you like!

To be honest, this recipe isn't a sauce either. It is ground up vegetables in a vinegar base. So I wonder why the ever did start calling it sauce. I think I'm changing its name - at least outside the family.

How ground up? Piccalilli veggies are cut up but they're still fairly large chunks. The 'sauce' uses tumeric, mustard, vinegar (possibly a couple of other things) and is thickened with cornflour ~ it's a beautiful yellow colour.

Yep!

Actually well drained tomatoes, onion, celery and some hot peppers are put through the food grinder. Then cider vinegar, sugar and dry mustard are added. No thickener. This one, of course, turns out red but it seems I vaguely remember my mom purchasing Piccalilli that was red at the store when I was a child.

Successful: Getting most of the garden planted despite a heart attack earlier in March.

Successful: Watching the weeds grow to five foot tall while it rained for months.

Successful: Ignoring the garden while it failed to rain for the rest of the summer.

sorry for your mishap but ROFLOL!! That sounds very much like 3 years ago when I was involved in a car accident in June. I hope you're getting better. There's always next year for the garden.

I'm not sure what this is referring to but I did tell Friend Hubby not to discourage the bushy tailed furry things from hanging around because if the economy goes too badly we could eat ..... locally grown meat... just like they did in the old days.

Successful: Reusing canning lids. Instead of opening jars with a bottle type opener, I have learned to open the jars by tipping a knife just under the lid. This doesn't damage the lid and I am able to reuse them. I've not had a failure yet - of course I look them over very carefully. With the price of lids....

We moved to the country this Spring and were sooooo excited to grow a HUGE garden! Little did we know that our neighbors' ponds would be then end of them... STUPID GEESE!

Unsuccessful : Planting a garden and 3 days later having nothing left because the neighbors geese are stingy..

Successful : The local farmer down the road had a TON of corn that we now have in the freezer ... I'm thinking corn sounds good for lunch!

This was in reference to the 30 lb. cottontail that fattened up on my green beans before they got one flower on them. Twice.

So does managing to finally get an aubergine on my aubergine plant count (bearing in mind, this is October now!) as a success?

absolutely that counts as success!

I am finally getting some tomatoes, I see a few teeny tiny cucumbers, and I have had some beans. I'm still waiting patiently (or trying to) to see if I'll get any squash.

Successful: This year I planted my sweet corn deeper than usual, 4 inches deep. It still germinated well and the stalks are much sturdier; more wind resistant.
