If I'd read this thread yesterday, maybe I could have laughed at how we're taking it in the shorts. But today, man I think there is some steam coming out of my ears. Did we go back to the days of robber barons? It surely feels like it. Paulson: "We have to work together," translation: paying for some fat cat on Long Island or in New Jersey who basically raped the financial system. Exactly. And these are the same fat cats that are always pushing for a tax break....while the rest of making under six figures bail out their risky financial schemes.....grrrrrrrrrrrr

I found this link here that talks about a lawsuit being filed for these "unconstitutional bailouts". You can search the bailouts for a number of different links.

The thing that stands out to me is that there is an assertion that the federal funds would be used to benefit only a private business. That is really a half-truth. The bailout of AIG as well as the support of other financial institutions is in the public interest. It seems to me that the bailout has prevented a world-wide market collapse. I recall when Chrysler Corporation was bailed out. There was a lot of whinning and moaning and fears about how much it was going to cost the American taxpayers. The fact is that Chrysler re-paid the government loans well ahead of time. They did not default and as a result it cost the taxpayers nothing. In this case, the cost to the taxpayers for this bailout is miniscule compared to what would happen if the government simply allowed the market to collapse. I doubt that this lawsuit will ever get to court.

I think we are all going to see it affect us in a dramatic way. These aren't loans that these companies will be paying back. The fact is the government just does not have the money to pay for these bailouts and they just keep adding up. The money will have to come from us. Democracy has been lost here. They are doing what they think is best. As a tax payer, I would like to think that I have a say so in how my money is spent. Knowing that I don't doesn't give me much comfort. I'm not alone in my determination. This was a mistake and we won't feel the full effects of this disastrous decision for a few months. The next president has a huge mess on his hands. Does it not bother anyone else that the Federal Reserve has this much power? I find it scary.

AIG Loan Last night's news came two days after the Fed agreed to bail out American International Group Inc. with an $85 billion loan in exchange for an 80 percent government stake. Here is the link:Paulson Bailout Plan Is Either `Worst' Approach or `Giant Step' I expect that the loan will be repaid.

Here is a little about the plan to repay the loan: AIG's new CEO, Edward Liddy, told employees yesterday he intends to repay the loan before the two-year deadline and may decide which assets to sell within weeks. ``I don't want to get things done 740 days from now and say, `Oh, we just made it by the skin of our teeth,''' Liddy, 62, said. ``As soon as it is paid down, and we no longer need it, we get control of the company again.'' Here is the link:AIG Gains on Prospects Investors May Derail Takeover (Update2) I don't think things are as bad as they are being portrayed.

Dubya, I know that you are one of those financial gurus, but I see the writing n the wall.. Jim Carson on World News tonight stated that we are on the verge of a depression. I tend to believe that. The works in progress are leaning in that direction. Besides this was predicted several years ago and people just laughed it off, because you know, it could never happen to them with all the millions they had falling out of their pockets. I guess they are crying now unless they too pulled it and put it into gold.....

Besides this was predicted several years ago and people just laughed it off, because you know, it could never happen to them with all the millions they had falling out of their pockets. I guess they are crying now unless they too pulled it and put it into gold..... The reason I doubt so much that is put out in the news is that when we actually take the time to look at the key indicators we see that there is definitely a slow-down but no recession and certainly no signs of a depression. If the government had not taken the steps they did this week, we could easily have slid into a depression. Our economy depends heavily on credit. Virtually every business runs on borrowed capital in some form. If the financial markets crashed, credit would become unavailable, confidence in banks would fail causing a run on funds, and before you know it we would have 1929 all over again. Unemployment, food and fuel shortages, and everything that goes with that. I wouldn't say there is nothing to worry about. I think the money supply will tighten up as a result of what happened this week causing interest rates to go up. This won't happen right away because the Fed is committed to low rates right now. This will certainly have an impact on the economy which we must watch very closely. The main thing I would say is don't panic based on what the talking heads in the media say. Educate yourself in the areas you and your family are invested in... 401K, IRA, savings, etc. and understand how whatever is happening might impact your personal finances.

uhm, let me guess that no one saw the article that detailed the fact that our government pumped even more of our fraudulent dollars into world-wide banks throughout Europe (Swiss, English, ect.) and into China as well in order to assist the financial institutions during this crisis. This amounts to our own government selling an even greater portion of our land and our possessions to foreign nations. Clearly, if this was known and understood by a majority of us "so-called commonfolk" then we would be protesting about this in our streets. Is selling your country out for the sake of a few months/few years time really worth it? Was this act done against the will of the majority of citizens of this country, or would it be if they understood what all this meant? The fact that the majority of our public schools end up passing children through their educational process in such a way that they cannot locigally deduce what any of this means anymore, testifies to the level of corruption that is present in our government today. Is there a depression coming? You better believe it is!!! Mystery Babylon has to fall, this is written in the book of Revelation! Has it yet? Not quite! What does Mystery Babylon represent in this day and age? To answer that you first have to realize what Babylon was in its time, an economic and military powerhouse that attracted merchants from all over the world in such a way that they were dependent upon her for most of everything. Today that can only be one country, the united states of America. I could go on and on in regards to this matter. I could detail parts of various and numerous dreams that I have had since the early 1990s concerning this matter and the things to come, but most of you have heard similar postings before so I will spare you the time. Brace yourselves and wake yourselves up. You are not living in a nightmare, for this nightmare has become a reality. Humble yourselves before God and perhaps He may spare you from the woes that we can clearly see coming. Perhaps He may choose not to do the things that He has planned if only we turn back to Him. The time for you to act is now, REPENT AMERICA and TURN BACK TO THE GOD THAT LOVES YOU.

ORIGINAL: rhippie So now that the Feds have bailed out another struggling business it got me to talking with some of my more liberal clients and we were all wondering the same thing: WHEN we we get our dividend/interest checks from the latest bailout? The Fed just "loaned" $85B to AIG at an interest rate of 11.1%. This bailout amounts to a loan from every person in the US for approx $283 per person. At 11.1% interest I calculate that I am owed $31 per year. When can I expect the check? (Yeah I know this should be in the comedy section) Bailouts aren't based on any high-minded principle of fairness - they're given out for expediency and protecting one's "self interest." The guiding principle of bailouts is that if you're going to "SCREW UP," do it on such a grand scale that you guarantee you're going to take the nation's banks and politicians down with you.

I know it's kinda late, but since no one else posted this earlier (and I expected someone to), I figure I'll break the ice. AIG, 3 other companies face fraud investigations quote:
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - American International Group Inc. may have agreed to take the U.S. government up on an $85 billion loan to help stave off bankruptcy, but now the nation's largest insurer faces an FBI investigation. The news sent its shares down nearly 34 percent Wednesday. http://www.azcentral.com/arizonarepublic/business/articles/2008/09/25/20080925biz-aig0925.html
